Position Overview


Sonepar is currently seeking a Legal Counsel to join its team in Western Canada. Reporting to the Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary (Canada), the candidate’s main objective will be to provide legal support to Sonepar’s business divisions on commercial matters. You will work closely with the company's commercial teams to negotiate, draft and review various types of contractual agreements and business proposals. You will be attentive to details and identify and reduce potential legal and financial risks, primarily those related to customer and supplier contracts. The ideal candidate has experience in commercial negotiation and contract management and has a strong background in Contract Law. You will be based in our Surrey office and occasional travel is required. This is a full-time permanent position.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the business teams and act as the primary legal point of contact for commercial matters.
  • Work closely with a diverse group of professionals within the company to identify and minimize the risks arising from commercial agreements and business proposals involving the company.
  • Actively participate in the negotiation, drafting and review of various types of commercial agreements, mainly customer and supplier contracts.
  • Review RFPs and support the business teams in the preparation of business proposals.
  • Ensure that the company’s contractual obligations are consistent with Management’s instructions.
  • Prepare legal opinions and contract summaries for the business teams and Management.
  • Interact with external stakeholders on commercial matters.
  • Support the Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary in other legal and compliance matters.


Skills and Experience

  • 7+ years of relevant experience supplemented by a LL.B. or J.D. degree (or equivalent) and good standing with a Canadian Law Society (exceptions allowed).
  • Experience in commercial negotiation, contract management, and contract law.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Organization skills, adaptability, and ability to evolve in a dynamic and changing environment.
  • Team player, sense of initiative, positive attitude, and excellent ability to simplify complex notions.
  • Autonomy and resourcefulness.
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Wage Range: 95,000 - 125,000 + annual bonus



Please note that, whilst not expected, the company may pay at a rate outside of the range for this role where appropriate. Actual compensation commensurate with the candidate’s experience, education, internal parity, role complexity, role level, and other relevant factors. The advertised salary range relates to British Columbia and is provided in accordance with the BC Pay Transparency Act. We recognize however that salaries are often driven by market forces in the local area where a candidate is based and accordingly the salary range may not apply outside of British Columbia.
