THE OPPORTUNITY

The Supervisor, Government & Community Relations will report to the Director, Indigenous & Stakeholder Relations and Sustainability (ISRS) and will play a lead role in the development and implementation of government and community relations strategies and plans in support of the company’s business objectives. This includes leading strategic engagement and advocacy with governments at the federal, provincial, and municipal level, working with forest sector industry associations, and collaborating with other internal business areas and subject matter experts to identify and respond to government relations matters. The Supervisor will also lead the Government & Community Relations business function to coordinate local community relations activities, and progress and support Al-Pac’s community engagement efforts. In doing so, the Supervisor will work closely with the Indigenous Relations, Woodlands, and Peoples Services teams. The Supervisor will likely have two direct reports and will manage service contracts as required.


RESPONSIBILITIES

Government Relations:

  • Working with the Director, lead strategic engagement and advocacy with federal, provincial and municipal governments.
  • Develop and execute government relations and advocacy strategies in support of Al-Pac’s business objectives, collaborating with internal teams and subject matter experts as required.
  • Build networks and effective relationships with government representatives, and support network building for key internal stakeholders.
  • Prepare and deliver persuasive advocacy materials for internal and external audiences, including briefings, position papers, correspondence and speaking points.
  • Proactively identify and provide informed recommendations on policy positions based on a thorough understanding of Al-Pac’s business.
  • Provide timely and insightful summaries and analyses of key legislative, regulatory, policy and other government related issues affecting the company.
  • Effectively represent Al-Pac at events, meetings, industry associations, government organizations and other government relations activities.
  • Provide direction, guidance, and best practice advice to internal stakeholders regarding government relations issues.

Community Relations & Community Engagement Activities:

  • Lead the business function to progress Al-Pac’s engagement with local communities in alignment with Al-Pac’s business objectives.
  • Collaborate effectively with other business areas, including Indigenous Relations, Woodlands, and People Services, to initiate, coordinate and/or support community engagement activities.

Community Investment Program:

  • Manage Al-Pac’s Community Investment Program in accordance with company policies, procedures, program guidelines, and other governance requirements.
  • Apply a continuous improvement approach to evaluating the effectiveness of Al-Pac community investment activities and programs against the company’s business objectives.

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Engage and collaborate effectively with internal stakeholders to develop effective government and community engagement strategies, plans, and activities in alignment with Al-Pac practices, accountabilities, and policies.
  • Build effective working relationships with external stakeholders.

Document Preparation:

  • Prepare documents using a variety of computer applications and tools, research, gather and summarize information and data, and develop reports, briefings, presentations, and information packages.

Compliance:

  • Comply with the organization's policies, procedures, program guidelines and relevant regulatory requirements and codes of conduct to ensure individual work adheres to those standards.
  • Comply with government policies, standards, and ethics with respect to government relations activities. Provide compliance advice and best practices for internal stakeholders.
  • Support preparation of reports for lobbyist regulation compliance.

People:

  • Lead the Government & Community Relations business function in accordance with Al-Pac policies, processes, and best practices.
  • Set work plans, annual goals, and performance and development plans for direct reports.
  • Oversee day-to-day work and project assignments, planning, and scheduling.
  • Carry out administrative approvals for direct reports in accordance with Al-Pac’s approvals authorities.
  • Manage vendors and external resources as required.


THE INDIVIDUAL

Given the pivotal role this individual will be expected to play in achieving the strategic objectives of the company and in supporting the success of the organization, it is essential that the successful candidate possess the following core competencies, experience, and attributes:


Education

  • Post-secondary education, preferably in Political Science, Business, Public Policy, Public Administration, other social sciences, or a related field.


Experience

  • 7-10 years professional experience in a corporate setting, preferably in the forest or natural resource development sectors.
  • In depth understanding of governments, and legislative and regulatory processes, at the federal, provincial and municipal levels.
  • Excellent understanding of the current political climate and issues across all levels of government.
  • Familiarity with industry-specific issues, regulations and trends.
  • Strong knowledge of regulation, ethics and standards related to lobbying and other government relations activities.
  • Established networks and relationships with government representatives.
  • Knowledge of community engagement drivers and best practices in the resource development sector.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with internal stakeholders at all levels.
  • Ability to engage with external stakeholders and the public with professionalism, tact, discretion, good judgement and trust.
  • Maintain confidentiality.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Al-Pac professional staff work Monday – Thursday from 7am – 5pm. This role is hybrid eligible in accordance with Al-Pac’s Hybrid Work Arrangement Program.

This position involves occasional travel to Al-Pac’s mill site location.
