IT PnD Data and Analytics is seeking a Business Intelligence Engineer to join our BI team.
As a Business Intelligence Engineer with our team, you will be working in a large, complex and dynamic, data-driven environment. You will be responsible for developing automated metrics that provide relevant insight to organizational leaders, building and maintaining dashboards, and performing complex data analytics.
This position requires the candidate to develop a deep understanding of the organization and key goals, earn trust with senior leadership, influence without authority, and provide relevant data insights.
To succeed, you must have the ability to engage deeply with diverse and talented business partners, earn trust using facts and data, and advise and influence decisions of senior business leaders through effective verbal and written communication.
This candidate must possess excellent analytical skills, project management experience, and a track record of delivering results in a complex and ambiguous environment.
Key job responsibilities
- Perform complex business analysis to help drive organizational decision-making
- Complete root cause analysis and provide recommendations to senior leadership to address opportunities

A day in the life
A day in the life of a BI engineer at IT PnD involves building large-scale reporting solutions using tools like Tableau and QuickSight. The day typically starts with a team stand-up to align on priorities, followed by deep work on developing and refining data transformation, building reports and automating processes. Collaboration with data scientists, analysts, and stakeholders is key to ensure the delivery of right metrics. Basic Qualifications
- 3+ years of analyzing and interpreting data with Redshift, Oracle, NoSQL etc. experience
- Experience with data visualization using Tableau, Quicksight, or similar tools

- Experience writing complex SQL queries
- Experience in Statistical Analysis packages such as R, SAS and Matlab

Detailed Overview:

Reporting to the Vice President, Digital Patient and Provider Experience, the Executive Director, Centre for Advanced Analytics, Data Science, and Innovation (CAADSI) provides leadership and direction in the review and optimization of business systems, through integrated analytics services providing and interpreting key analytics on the status and standing of clinical and business operations.

Participates in the Senior Leadership Team of the Vice President, Digital Patient and Provider Experience portfolio, plans, implements and evaluates related physical, financial and human resources requirements support of the strategic and operational needs of Fraser Health, participates in the development of the mission, strategies and goals to ensure the optimum delivery of services.

Responsibilities:

Organizational:

  • Develops and recommends short and long-range goals and objectives for portfolio departments ensuring plans support the goals, policies and vision of Fraser Health.
  • Plans and implements operating and capital budgets for the reporting departments including budget preparation, authorization control and reporting of expenditures ensuring the efficient utilization of the financial resources of the departments within the objectives, plans and budgets established by senior FH Executives. Hold authority to allocate financial resources across departments to best meet portfolio and Fraser Health requirements.
  • Provides senior leadership to all staff across the departments to build motivation to attain goals for the department, portfolio and organization. Qualifications:

Education and Experience

Basic Qualifications
- 4+ years of data engineering experience
- Experience building/operating highly available, distributed systems of data extraction, ingestion, and processing of large data sets
- Experience in at least one modern scripting or programming language, such as Python, Java, Scala, or NodeJS
- Experience with AWS technologies like Redshift, S3, AWS Glue, EMR, Kinesis, FireHose, Lambda, and IAM roles and permissions
- Experience with SQL
- Experience with data audit and reconciliation strategies.
- Experience with data pipeline orchestration frameworks, such as Airflow.
- Experience with streaming data processing technologies.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with non-relational databases / data stores (object storage, document or key-value stores, graph databases, column-family databases)
- Experience providing technical leadership and mentoring other engineers for best practices on data engineering
- Master's degree in computer science, engineering, analytics, mathematics, statistics, IT or equivalent

Key job responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate highly scalable, fault-tolerant data processing systems using modern AWS services like Redshift, S3, Glue, EMR, Kinesis, and Lambda, and orchestration systems using Airflow
- Leverage your expertise in Python, Scala, or other modern programming languages to develop custom data processing frameworks and automation tools
- Collaborate closely with data scientists, analysts, and product managers to understand business requirements and translate them into technical solutions
- Continuously optimize data pipeline performance, reliability, and cost-efficiency using best practices in CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code
- Mentor junior engineers and share your knowledge of data engineering best practices
- Stay up-to-date with the latest big data technologies and architectural patterns, and drive the adoption of innovative solutions

What You Will Do
As a manager, you'll lead and work as part of a team of problem solvers with extensive consulting and industry experience, helping our clients solve their complex business issues from strategy to execution. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to

  • Work with cross functional engagement teams to translate business and analytics requirements into a data, analytics and AI strategy and requirement for the engagement
  • Architect and develop overall end-to-end design of data and analytics solutions across Data Lakes, Data Warehouses, Data Lakehouses, pipelines on modern data platforms such as Microsoft Fabric, Databricks and Snowflake (with a focus on the first two) on Azure, AWS and GCP (with a focus on the first) and lead the deployment and delivery of the solution
  • Enforce technical architecture and documentation standards, policies, and procedures
  • Analyze, implement, and resolve issues with existing modern data platforms
  • Provide mentorship to a team of data engineers, software developers, and data scientists with a focus is on modern data analytics platform
  • Lead the team to assemble large, complex data sets that meet functional / non-functional business requirements
  • Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.
  • Work with stakeholders including the Executive, Product, Data and Design teams to assist with data, analytics and AI-related technical issues and support their data analytics infrastructure needs
  • Perform data management tasks, including data architecture design and data modeling, master data/metadata/data security/privacy/data quality management, data operations, data integration and interoperability
  • Develop standards for data processes and automate routine tasks
  • Run queries for descriptive analytics and provide formatted result sets
  • Proactively contribute to the creation of presentation materials relating to data activities for stakeholder discussions
  • Create data tools for analytics and data scientist team members that assist them in building and optimizing our product into an innovative industry leader
  • Take ownership of projects and pushing technological boundaries
  • Presales, estimating and proposal writing, responding to RFPs

What You Bring To The Role
We will look to you to bring a blend of knowledge, training, and experience, including

  • 6+ years of experience in data engineering, analytics, and AI (data/data platform architecture, design, implementation, and/or support of complex data and application architectures that are scalable and repeatable) ideally within a services/consulting organization
  • Expertise in leading and mentoring team members toward developmental objectives and resilience to overcome challenges or setbacks to achieve team, project, and client goals
  • Expertise in relational and non-relational databases, including query language (SQL);
  • Expertise in building and optimizing data pipelines, architectures and data models for all data types, speed, and sizes
  • Expertise in performing root cause analysis on internal and external data; processes to answer specific business questions and identify opportunities for improvement
  • Expertise in building standards, processes supporting data, data transformation, data structures, metadata, dependency, and workload management
  • A successful history of manipulating, processing, and extracting value from large discrete datasets
  • Working knowledge of message queuing, stream processing, parallel processing, and data lakes
  • Expertise in deploying and maintaining high performance computing VMs in on-premises and cloud environment
  • Experience using a combination of industry relevant software/tools including some of the following

  • Modern Data Analytics Platforms Microsoft Fabric, Synapse, Databricks, Snowflake

  • Big data tools Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, etc.
  • Relational SQL and NoSQL databases, including MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and Cosmos DB
  • Data pipeline and workflow management tools Azkaban, Luigi, Airflow, etc.
  • Azure, AWS and GCP cloud data services
  • Stream-processing systems Spark-Streaming, Azure Event Hubs, etc.

  • Relevant post-secondary education in a related field

  • Experience in analytics, statistics, data mining, machine learning, natural language processing and/or mathematics is an asset

KPMG BC Region Pay Range Information
The expected base salary range for this position is $93,000 to $155,000 and may be eligible for bonus awards.
