**Job Description**
As a part of our continued growth, AECOM Buildings + Places is seeking a motivated and skilled **Mechanical HVAC Engineer** to join our Ottawa-based team to support various buildings projects.
The successful hire will focus on Mechanical HVAC during the construction phase of projects. This role requires site-visits, with some work from office and home permitted as well.
**Job Summary:**
You will work in a team environment with other engineers, technologists, BIM specialists, and project managers to deliver projects in this sector, as well as in support of those in other business lines (such as Transportation and Water) to our clients both here in Ottawa and across Eastern Canada. You will also be a part of multidisciplinary project teams comprising of other engineering disciplines, consultants, and architects.
**Major Responsibilities:**
The responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:
+ Preparing deliverables and products such as presentation materials, calculations, drawings, specifications, selections, and cost estimates related to heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) and plumbing systems for commercial, institutional, and light industrial facilities.
+ Performing field investigation for incorporating existing conditions into construction documents.
+ Performing construction administration duties, such as shop drawing review, RFI response, construction inspection, and respond to client questions.
+ Conduct on-site visits weekly to monitor construction progress, address issues, and ensure compliance with design specifications and regulatory requirements.
+ Coordinate with design teams and contractors to resolve technical and construction-related challenges.
+ Perform quality assurance reviews, ensuring that construction aligns with approved plans and specifications.
+ Working within a project team environment and possessing good presentation and client interface skills.
+ Coordinating work with other project disciplines.
+ Working independently and making technical mechanical decisions based on building code interpretation and company standard practice.
+ Demonstrating creativity, foresight and mature judgment in anticipating and solving both routine and unusual project delivery, technical and client challenges, determining technical objectives and requirements, organizing programs and projects, and developing standards and guides for technical activities and applications.
+ Staying abreast of industry standards and approaches, and best practices.
+ Ensuring project work is undertaken is accordance with corporate health and safety policies and quality management systems. Mentoring junior staff.
+ Performing assignments of limited scope and complexity. Uses a variety of standard engineering methods and techniques in solving problems.
+ Assisting more senior level engineers in carrying out technical tasks requiring accuracy in calculations, completeness of data and adherence to prescribed analysis, design, or computation methods.
+ Applying standard practices and techniques in specific situations. Gathers and correlates basic engineering data using established and well-defined procedures.
**Qualifications**
**Minimum Requirements:**
In order to be considered for this position, candidates must meet the requirements below, at a very minimum:
+ Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering plus two (2) years' experience designing HVAC and plumbing for commercial, institutional, and light industrial facilities.
+ Holding or the ability to obtain Secret Level security clearance
Demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education may be considered.
**Preferred Qualifications:**
+ Professional Engineer (or has the ability to become one within 12 months) in Ontario.
+ Experience designing HVAC and plumbing for commercial, institutional, and light industrial facilities within an engineering firm)
+ Working experience with NBC, BCBC, BCPC, SMACNA, ASHRAE codes and standards
+ Experience using HAP, AutoCAD, REVIT, Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, Project, and Power Point
+ Experience with Building Energy Modeling and their software platforms (IES, eQuest, Energy Plus, HOT2000, RETScreen, etc.) would be considered an asset
+ Experience with sustainability standards (LEED, Net Zero, Passive House, Envision) would be considered an asset
+ Fire protection design experience
+ Familiarity with ISO quality management system
+ Experience working within internal multidisciplinary teams
+ Excellent written and verbal communication

+ Provide detailed design, experiments and research in the following areas: mechanical design of complex rugged computers and chassis systems, PWB design details and microstructure, adhesives and thermal interface materials, thermal and structural design considerations, and mechanical assembly drawings.

+ Support design and analysis for high reliability rugged environments, including severe shock, vibration, and temperature extremes
+ Provide technical support to failure investigations. May lead failure investigation teams. Interpret results and draw appropriate conclusions, documenting and presenting findings to other staff
+ Provide technical support for bid responses
+ Support R&D Engineering teams in regular design reviews
+ Stay current with new trends in materials used for rugged electronics environments
**What You Bring:**
+ Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering
+ 4-6+ years of experience, preferably in a rugged electronics design and manufacturing environment
+ Experience with heat transfer problem solving (conduction and convection), vibration dynamics, fluid dynamics and materials science
+ Experience with MIL-STD's and other Aerospace specifications is an asset
+ Experience with electronics manufacturing processes is an asset
+ Experience with one or more of the following tools is an asset: PTC Creo CAD, Abaqus FEA, Flotherm CFD
+ A working knowledge of FEA techniques is essential

**Location**
The position will be based on our project in **Darlington, ON. The successful candidate will be local to Darlington, Oshawa or surrounding areas, or willing to relocate.**
**Responsibilities**
+ Develop drawings and calculations for temporary works and construction methods including:
+ Heavy lift plans (site logistics, equipment selection, design of custom rigging and lifting devices, hoisting and jacking systems, custom tools, and crane pad designs)
+ Erection procedures or planned sequences related to construction or demolition operations
+ Evaluation of existing structures for construction loads and/or demolition planning
+ Structural analysis to ensure stability during the temporary condition of new bridges, viaducts, buildings, tunnels, and other structures (for example: construction staging, design of temporary falsework systems, and rebar cage hoisting and support)
+ Support of excavation systems or cofferdams for construction below grade
+ Temporary bridges, trestles, work platforms, fall protection systems, formwork, and other features relating to our construction operations
+ Perform and/or review others' calculations and design drawings, according to industry codes, standards, additional client design criteria, and structural theories
+ Ensure quality and accuracy of the design deliverables
+ Help to identify design risks and assist with risk mitigation planning
+ Assist in Project Management (budgets, schedules, quality control, and coordination / communication with clients)
+ Other responsibilities include: Project on-site design engineering support, on-site inspections, training and mentoring E.I.T.'s, etc.
**Qualifications**
+ Experience with temporary structures and/or construction engineering
+ Accredited Bachelor of Science degree in Civil or Structural Engineering; Master's degree or greater in Structural Engineering is preferred
+ 8+ years of relevant engineering experience
+ Professional Engineer licensure or eligibility within Canada
+ Strong all-around academic knowledge of structural engineering
+ Experience with engineering design software will be an advantage; this includes AutoCAD, BlueBeam, MathCAD, RISA-3D etc.
+ Experience working in a team setting
+ Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with individuals at all levels of the organization
+ Strong inter-personal skills and an ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment
+ Ability to organize and handle multiple project assignments
+ Ability to travel/TDY assignments and/or relocate based on business needs
+ Ability to freely access all points of a construction site in wide-ranging climates and environments
**Other Requirements:**
+ Regular, reliable attendance
+ Work productively and meet deadlines timely
+ Communicate and interact effectively and professionally with supervisors, employees, and others individually or in a team environment
+ Perform work safely and effectively. Understand and follow oral and written instructions, including warning signs, equipment use, and other policies.
+ Work during normal operating hours to organize and complete work within given deadlines. Work overtime and weekends as required.
+ May work at various different locations and conditions may vary
