Position Summary:
We are looking for an Artificial Intelligence Specialist to champion AI adoption across our company while ensuring strategic alignment with business objectives and our technology ecosystem. Key Responsibilities:
Alignment & Business Integration
- Partner with business leaders to identify AI opportunities that align with organizational strategy and deliver measurable value
- Translate business requirements into AI use cases and collaborate with technical teams on implementation roadmaps
- Monitor AI trends and assess their relevance to our industry and competitive landscape
- Develop business cases for AI investments and track ROI on implemented solutions
- Serve as the primary advocate for our AI platforms and tools across all business units

- Advise on ethical considerations in AI development including fairness, transparency and accountability aligned to applicable regulations.
- Being able to travel 30% of the time nationally as well as internationally.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, or a related field.
- Proven experience with AI and machine learning concepts, tools, and applications.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively educate and influence diverse audiences.
- Ability to translate complex AI topics into accessible language and practical business solutions.
- Familiarity with our specific AI platforms and technology stack (Microsoft, Oracle, ServiceNow) and programming skills (Python, R, or similar).
- Experience working in cross-functional teams and managing AI-related projects is preferred.
- Fluency in French and/or Spanish an asset but not mandatory
- Experience in training or change management related to technology adoption.

We are seeking an experienced Artificial Intelligence (AI) expert to join Invest Ottawas talented team of advisors. This AI Advisor will provide tech startups in our IO Venture Path programs with coaching, mentorship, and recommendations on AI strategies and tools that help them achieve business outcomes and impact. This includes guidance and support for activities that:
- Assist companies in developing an AI strategy aligned with their stage, goals, industry, and available resources. This includes conducting assessments, defining AI objectives, and creating a strategic roadmap.
- Help companies identify appropriate AI solutions based on their data and use cases.
- Support both technical and non-technical executive leaders in initiating and leading internal and client-facing AI projects. Provide mentorship, project management and change management insights.
- Educate and empower non-technical team members of startups to effectively leverage AI in their work, enhancing efficiency and productivity.
Our Companies
IO Venture Path companies are growing their teams, their revenue and their markets. This role will work with firms at various stages, from each of our programs:
- IO Ignition: 10-week bootcamp designed for early-stage (often pre-revenue) companies.
- IO Flex: Low-touch program, designed for early-stage companies who are pipeline for our growth/scale stage programs.

Our Advisors
Our Advisors are independent contractors. They are available between 10-15 hours per month and paid the standard advisor rate of 150/hour. Reporting to Invest Ottawas Director, Venture Programs, the AI Advisor will support clients by:
- Providing direct one-on-one advisory to founders and other team members on the development and implementation of successful AI strategies, including how to identify suitable AI opportunities, develop an AI strategy, and manage the AI lifecycle from development to deployment to optimization. Helping companies assess their current level of AI readiness and develop practical, staged roadmaps and strategies to advance their adoption of AI.
- Participating in peer groups or delivering best practice workshops.
- Reporting on client feedback and trends to help develop new programs and services.
- Logging hours spent advising companies and documenting meeting notes in Microsoft Dynamics.
- Facilitating introductions or connections between our client companies and our other Advisors, services and sponsors when appropriate for the companys benefit.
- Provide support for the implementation of AI solutions within Invest Ottawa. Assist in the design, development, deployment, and integration of AI tools and systems
We would love to hear from you if you possess most of the following:
- Hold a degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Machine Learning, or a related field.
- Have held a senior AI leadership role (i.e. Head of AI, AI Director) or worked as an AI consultant within the technology sector, with fast-growing or scaling companies.
- Played a key role in at least five end-to-end AI rollouts, including scoping, development, deployment, and change management - ideally across various business functions (e.g., marketing, operations, sales, HR).
- Capable of translating complex AI concepts for nontechnical audiences, helping founders and teams understand business impact.
- Understand the startup and scale-up lifecycle, with direct experience as a founder, early employee, or advisor.
- Able to identify opportunities for AI adoption and automation, and craft practical, ROI-focused AI strategies.
- Comfortable quickly assessing a startups AI readiness and providing tailored, actionable guidance, including the ability to translate that assessment into a clear, prioritized roadmap for adoption and growth.

Global Relay advertises the pay range for this role in compliance with British Columbia's pay transparency laws. Individual pay rates are determined by evaluating factors such as expertise, skills, education, and professional background.

Prerequisites
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, administration, or equivalent.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as an IT analyst
- Experience in developing and deploying AI systems
- Knowledge of agile development methodologies
- Experience producing detailed and relevant user stories
- Familiarity with Atlassian suite (Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket)
- Proficiency in Python, SQL, and AI libraries
- AWS certifications and automation techniques in 'infra as code' (an asset)
- Excellent interpersonal skills and effective communication of AI results to non-technical stakeholders
