We are seeking a skilled Facilities Maintenance Technician to assist the Facility Engineer in the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of various facility systems. This role involves working with HVAC systems, motors, pumps, and other maintenance tasks in the utility and facility areas.
**Responsibilities**
+ Assist the Facility Engineer in operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting tasks, including LOTO and work at heights.
+ Replace air filters on schedule and vacuum units.
+ Conduct visual inspections of Air Handling Units, including belts, bearings, filters, drains, control valves, coils, and leakages. Adjust dampers as needed.
+ Replace and align belts, replace bearings on AHU and circulation pumps, and clean coils and grills.
+ Inspect, lubricate, and replace mechanical seals on motors/pumps.
+ Perform maintenance tasks in utility and facility areas, such as topping up glycol and replacing pumps, steam traps, and pressure gauges.
**Essential Skills**
+ 2+ years of facilities maintenance experience.
+ Skills in facilities maintenance, HVAC maintenance, and mechanical repair.
+ Experience working with steam, glycol, and HVAC systems.
+ Mechanically inclined with electrical and plumbing skills.
+ Experience in preventive maintenance, industrial wiring, facilities, and building maintenance.
**Additional Skills & Qualifications**
+ Experience with motors.
+ Knowledge of tools and instruments such as velometer and manometer.

IISD Experimental Lakes Area (IISD-ELA) is one of the worlds most influential freshwater research facilities. It features a collection of 58 small lakes and their watersheds in northwestern Ontario, Canada. For over 50 years, scientists at IISD-ELA have conducted whole-ecosystem experiments and made significant scientific discoveries related to issues such as acid rain, mercury from air pollution, algal blooms, and pharmaceutical chemicals in water.The facility is operated by the International Institute for Sustainable Developmentan independent think tank headquartered in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on Treaty 1 territory, the traditional land of Anishinaabeg, Cree, Ojibwe-Cree, Dakota, and Dene Peoples, and homeland of the Mtis Nation.

IISD-ELA acknowledges that its research facility is located on Treaty 3 lands, and the care of these lands during experimentation and restoration to their original state is implicit in its mission. Many regional schools come to the facility to learn more about the science of aquatic ecosystems.

Overview

The Facilities Maintenance Technician will be crucial in maintaining the operational efficiency, security, and functionality of the facility. Working closely with the Facilities Manager, they will be responsible for the upkeep of infrastructure, equipment, and access roads. This role requires a versatile individual with strong mechanical aptitude to handle various responsibilities, from troubleshooting equipment issues to performing general maintenance.


Based full-time at the IISD-ELA site, the Facilities Maintenance Technician collaborates closely with the Facilities Manager to ensure the facility is fully operational and secure for both the site and personnel.

Responsibilities

Facility Maintenance and Management

  • Provide technical services for maintenance, repair, procurement, and life-cycle management of infrastructure and mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and security systems and equipment.
  • Conduct regular maintenance and monitoring of fuel and propane storage facilities, recording and reporting fuel usage, and making fuel orders as required.
  • Maintain field equipment (boats, motors, snowmobiles, ATVs) and off-site facilities (trails, boat landings, docks) year-round.
  • Manage utilities maintenance, including HVAC, structural/roof, roads/grounds, water supply, power supply, and plumbing.
  • Troubleshoot, perform preventative maintenance, and make upgrades to equipment, including operating automated building control systems.
  • Perform year-round maintenance on access roads, including winter plowing, washout repair, ditching, brushing, culvert replacement, and ongoing damage control.



Data Collection and Record-Keeping

  • Assist in collecting data from the IISD-ELA Meteorological Facility and other research projects.
  • Keep records for reporting purposes, including maintenance of water treatment equipment, water pumping data, sewage lift station pump hours, and other reporting streams.

Supervision and Safety

  • Supervise staff and contractors as required.
  • Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Certification or apprenticeship in mechanical and/or electrical systems.
  • Experience in one or more skilled trades is an asset.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Skilled in troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, repairs, and upgrades of various equipment; may include vehicles or field equipment such as outboard motors, boats, ATVs, and snowmobiles.
  • Knowledge of HVAC, roads/grounds maintenance, water supply, power supply, electrical and plumbing.
  • Ability to perform year-round maintenance on access roads, including winter plowing, washout repair, ditching, brushing, culvert replacement, and damage control.

  • Additional interest in the overall research plan of IISD-ELA is an asset. Experience working and living in a remote facility is also beneficial to this position.

Your Role:
Reporting to the Facilities and Security Manager, the Facilities Maintenance Assistant plays a key role in ensuring the smooth operation and upkeep of the School’s physical environment. The Facilities Maintenance Assistant is responsible for performing a variety of duties to maintain and repair the School’s buildings, equipment, and grounds. The Facilities Maintenance Assistant will also assist with preventive maintenance tasks, carry out minor repairs, support office moves, and help with setting up rooms for meetings, events, and performances.

  • Keep equipment, systems and buildings ready for use by completing preventative maintenance schedules, report any issues and anomalies to the Facilities and Security Manager

  • Assist grounds maintenance to maintain the exterior of the buildings by removing ice and snow from walkways and parking areas, and picking up litter and debris from the NBS property

Skills and Qualifications:
  • Apprenticeship in electrical, plumbing, drywall, carpentry, and painting is considered an asset
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a professional environment 
  • Sound technical and mechanical knowledge to complete routine maintenance and repairs
  • Strong analytical skills to troubleshoot and diagnose problems
  • Capable of lifting 50lbs comfortably; may be required to move furniture, conduct minor repairs/construction, clear snow and ice, etc.

The Role

We are currently seeking a Facilities & Maintenance Worker (Level 2) to join our team. The Role

To assist in this work, we are seeking a Facilities & Maintenance Worker (Level 1) to join our growing team. This role is essential in ensuring that our facilities, buildings, and surrounding grounds are safe, clean, and well-maintained. The ideal candidate is hands-on, proactive, and experienced in general maintenance, custodial duties, and minor repairs.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the Division Manager for FMO, the Operations Manager's primary function is to realize and expand Black & McDonald core value through overall relationship and outcome management and by applying an integrated approach to delivery of all Black & McDonald self-performed, managed work, including but not limited:

  • Ensuring processes and procedures are in place to ensure consistency and continuity of services.
  • By example, demonstrate a leadership role is all aspects of HSE for the staff under his care.
  • Leveraging and deploying the wider Black & McDonald service offering and resources.
  • Establishing a governance model that gives customers direct interface with our senior management.
  • Acting as the Owner's Representative for the stipulated work and any other tasks as requested.
  • Holding primary responsibility for clear, comprehensive and timely reporting as agreed.
  • Addressing, documenting and rectifying any contractual or performance items with full transparency and integrity with best business outcomes in mind for customers.
  • Providing technical and operational guidance and support to the Facilities Manager and Project Management.
  • Monitoring QA throughout the portfolio, in conjunction with the QA Manager, to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Leading/attending meetings on a regular and frequent basis to provide monthly and quarterly reporting, highlighting performance, achievements and recommendations.
  • Championing adoption and leveraging of emerging technologies to achieve better business outcomes.
  • Ensuring accountability, as well as a Continuous Improvement emphasis for the benefit of our customers.
  • Execute tasks and lead staff in accordance with Corporate Policy.
  • Build, promote and maintain good customer and vendor relationships.
  • Prepare contracts and negotiate revisions, changes, and additions to contractual agreements with suppliers, and subcontractors.
  • Develop and implement quality control programs.
  • Represent company on matters such as business services and union matters.
  • Prepare progress reports and issue progress schedules to clients.
  • Hire and supervise the activities of subcontractors and subordinate staff.
  • Participate and provide updates to customer designates during weekly / bi-weekly / monthly meetings or as needed.
  • Provide assistance for internal or client based audits or inspections as needed.
  • Ensure that required environmental, health and safety, security and quality assurance programs are implemented as per internal / client specific policies and local codes and regulations.
  • Provide oversight and technical guidance to direct reports, as needed.
  • Provide assistance with emerging critical responses, on an as needed basis.
  • Perform site inspections in an effort to increase conformance to safe and best work practices, including post-incident reporting, supporting EHS / Security reports, and reviewing / approving any new request for client reports.
  • Ensure staff compliance with applicable training requirements (internal / client specific) and ensure job specific procedural guidelines are followed.
  • Provide SMART benchmarks for staff KPI's and provide feedback semi-annually in the form of documented performance assessments

COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS

  • Familiarity with specific software packages and management tools (JDE / DSI / CMMS Dashboards, etc)
  • Advanced analytical and time management skills
  • Understanding of Facility Management processes and standards, either through work experience or qualifications

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • A university degree in civil engineering, a CET, college diploma in construction technology, or related education is considered an asset
  • A trade license may be an asset
  • Experience in the Facility Management industry may substitute for post-secondary education requirements

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum 3 - 5 years Management experience within Facilities Management and/or operations management experience in the Healthcare or Research Facilities
  • Minimum of 10 years in progressive positions within FMO

SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Able to travel within the Greater Toronto Area (GTA)
  • Security clearance requirements: must be able to get reliability and vulnerable sector clearances
