IISD Experimental Lakes Area (IISD-ELA) is one of the worlds most influential freshwater research facilities. It features a collection of 58 small lakes and their watersheds in northwestern Ontario, Canada. For over 50 years, scientists at IISD-ELA have conducted whole-ecosystem experiments and made significant scientific discoveries related to issues such as acid rain, mercury from air pollution, algal blooms, and pharmaceutical chemicals in water.The facility is operated by the International Institute for Sustainable Developmentan independent think tank headquartered in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on Treaty 1 territory, the traditional land of Anishinaabeg, Cree, Ojibwe-Cree, Dakota, and Dene Peoples, and homeland of the Mtis Nation.
IISD-ELA acknowledges that its research facility is located on Treaty 3 lands, and the care of these lands during experimentation and restoration to their original state is implicit in its mission. Many regional schools come to the facility to learn more about the science of aquatic ecosystems.
Overview
The Facilities Maintenance Technician will be crucial in maintaining the operational efficiency, security, and functionality of the facility. Working closely with the Facilities Manager, they will be responsible for the upkeep of infrastructure, equipment, and access roads. This role requires a versatile individual with strong mechanical aptitude to handle various responsibilities, from troubleshooting equipment issues to performing general maintenance.
Based full-time at the IISD-ELA site, the Facilities Maintenance Technician collaborates closely with the Facilities Manager to ensure the facility is fully operational and secure for both the site and personnel.
Responsibilities
Facility Maintenance and Management
- Provide technical services for maintenance, repair, procurement, and life-cycle management of infrastructure and mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and security systems and equipment.
- Conduct regular maintenance and monitoring of fuel and propane storage facilities, recording and reporting fuel usage, and making fuel orders as required.
- Maintain field equipment (boats, motors, snowmobiles, ATVs) and off-site facilities (trails, boat landings, docks) year-round.
- Manage utilities maintenance, including HVAC, structural/roof, roads/grounds, water supply, power supply, and plumbing.
- Troubleshoot, perform preventative maintenance, and make upgrades to equipment, including operating automated building control systems.
- Perform year-round maintenance on access roads, including winter plowing, washout repair, ditching, brushing, culvert replacement, and ongoing damage control.
Data Collection and Record-Keeping
- Assist in collecting data from the IISD-ELA Meteorological Facility and other research projects.
- Keep records for reporting purposes, including maintenance of water treatment equipment, water pumping data, sewage lift station pump hours, and other reporting streams.
Supervision and Safety
- Supervise staff and contractors as required.
- Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols.
Other
Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Qualifications
- Certification or apprenticeship in mechanical and/or electrical systems.
- Experience in one or more skilled trades is an asset.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Skilled in troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, repairs, and upgrades of various equipment; may include vehicles or field equipment such as outboard motors, boats, ATVs, and snowmobiles.
- Knowledge of HVAC, roads/grounds maintenance, water supply, power supply, electrical and plumbing.
- Ability to perform year-round maintenance on access roads, including winter plowing, washout repair, ditching, brushing, culvert replacement, and damage control.
- Ability to collect data and keep records related to water treatment, fuel usage, hours of operation, regulatory compliance, etc.
- Ability to supervise junior staff and contractors as required.
- Strong interpersonal skills; collegial and community minded.
- Able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting aptitude.
- Candidates must possess or be willing to obtain valid certifications for the following prior to the start of their term. Candidates should also highlight any other training certificates relevant to Occupational Health and Safety, i.e., chainsaw certification, WHMIS, TDG, etc.

- Additional interest in the overall research plan of IISD-ELA is an asset. Experience working and living in a remote facility is also beneficial to this position.

A current driver's license is required, as well as front end loader experience (snow removal in winter months).

- Ensure Contractor service is scheduled and on-time, obtain quotes as required for repairs and open issues are brought forward, report to the Team and closed in a timely manner.
- Maintain all Internal and Contractor work completed to support IATF Audits and ISO.
- Obtain quotes as required for repair and maintenance of facility and related equipment.
- Request annual working Capital for Facilities and Equipment improvements.
- Obtain 3 quotes for Capital projects and spare parts. Review details with Manager.
- Back up the Maintenance Supervisor in his absence
- Assist in generating the weekly project list with the Maintenance Supervisor
- Manage the Maintenance Fabrication project list and work orders pertaining to the Fabrication Team. Hold Daily and TOP 5 weekly Meetings.

Salary:
The Maintenance & Facilities Supervisor is responsible for the general maintenance and upkeep of our facilities which have both office and production spaces. Reporting to the Director of Operations, the incumbent will oversee all building-related activities, ensuring the upkeep, efficiency, appearance and safety of our facilities. The Maintenance & Facilities Supervisor will lead our custodial and maintenance teams to ensure that cleaning, maintenance, and required repairs are completed promptly, guaranteeing safe, accessible, and secure facilities.
Additionally, they will work closely with all levels of management and employees to create an environment that reflects our core values and company culture; integrating people, place and process.
Key Responsibilities:
Facility Maintenance & Repairs
- Manage troubleshooting, emergency/unscheduled repairs of equipment, structures and production machines, diagnose problems, replace or repair parts, test and make necessary adjustments.
- Oversee the maintenance and repair of buildings, equipment, and grounds through the development and implementation of maintenance schedules.
- Manage day-to-day operations of the facilities, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and security systems.
- Ensure all utilities are functioning efficiently and sustainably
- Manage regular property inspections of units, common areas, building exteriors and address issues and/or hazards.
- Maintain inventory of equipment, supplies, spare parts and ordering replacements as necessary.
- Prepare and maintain records, reports, and documentation related to facility operations.
Preventive Maintenance Program & Calibration
- Support operation team members and drive effective implementation of preventive maintenance and calibration programs to minimize equipment downtime, improve OEE availability and performance.
- Schedule and oversee routine PM and calibration of machinery, to ensure operational accuracy.
- Maintain and oversee PM & calibration records and ensure compliance with industry standards and manufacturer specifications.
- Monitor equipment performance trends and adjust maintenance schedules based on data-driven insights.
- Develop, update and maintain SOPs and work instructions for Preventive Maintenance.Support training staff on proper PM and calibration procedures and calibration protocols.
Vendor & Contractor Management
- Set priorities for PM and calibration, work orders, maintenance requisitions, and scheduled work.
- Manage relationships with contractors, vendors, and service providers and supervise quality of their services.
- Support to develop facility budgets, including cost estimates, bids, and contracts.
Renovations & Team Projects support
- Coordinate, lead and motivate maintenance teams to support activities and other team members and departments.
- Plan and oversee renovations, refurbishments, and facility upgrades.
- Coordinate with stakeholders for project planning and execution on time, within scope, and within budget.
- Maintain project documentation and provide regular updates to senior management.
Health & Safety Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all applicable safety regulations, legislation and company policies.
- Implement and enforce health and safety protocols; conduct safety drills and training sessions.
Sustainability, Environmental and Energy Management
- Lead and maintain environmental management systems and activities in compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Implement energy-saving initiatives and sustainability projects.
- Drive waste management, sustainability projects, waste reduction and recycling programs
- Monitor and report on key environmental KPIs (energy consumption, utility and water usage) to track progress and ensure continuous improvement.
Food Packaging Safety & Quality Compliance
- Manage activities for implementation of effective sanitation process, air and water quality systems
- Support operations processed verifications and validations
- Drive food safety hazards building and operational inspections and coordinate for implementation of related corrective and preventive actions
- Support to develop and maintain all relevant SOPs and work instructions and conducting audits
- Maintains and upholds food packaging safety and GMP practices within the facility.
- Support all activities and tasks to identify and mitigate risks as per HACCP plan and SQF system
- Collaborate with members of the crisis team to develop crisis plans and proactive business continuity strategies and support effective implementation of strategic response measures.
Key Experience & Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in Facilities Management, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering,
or related field. - Minimum of 5 years of experience in facilities management, maintenance, or a related field.
- Prior experience managing multiple facilities of multi-use space
- Strong knowledge of building systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and security.
- Excellent project management and team leadership skills.
- Ability to read and understand blueprints and technical documents.
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to comprehend and communicate detailed instructions orally and in writing.
- Proficiency in using facilities management software.
- Certified Facility Manager (CFM) or Facility Management Professional (FMP) is an asset.
- Up to date knowledge of Health & Safety legislation and best practices
- Problem solving capabilities.
- First Aid training and/or certificates are considered assets.
- Occupational Health and Safety Certificate or equivalent is considered an asset.
- Highly motivated and able to work independently, exhibiting initiative, responsibility, and flexibility.
- Possess a valid driver's license with daily access to your own vehicle
- Able to deal with people sensitively, tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally at all times
