**Position Summary**
The Advanced Imaging group develops both full custom and semi-custom image sensors and cameras for Airborne, Space, and Life Science applications. As a Mechanical Design Specialist of one or more projects, you will be responsible for mechanical product design, fixture design, product testing, and development of assembly processes. You will work with a team that may include project managers, electronics design specialists, process engineers, and test specialists. **Position Responsibilities**
+ Own the mechanical design and drive all mechanical aspects of product development, following a rigorous design control process
+ Develop (and subsequently validate) product designs that are complete, thorough, and work together as a system, designing for performance, manufacturing, assembly, and reliability in the field
+ Develop assembly processes for complex electronic/optical products requiring precise alignment and tight control of geometric tolerances such as flatness
+ Perform hand calculations and review FEA to develop, assess, and optimize designs
+ Rapidly iterate on manufacturing processes and development testing in a fast-paced environment
+ Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to ensure hardware, sensors, and optics integrate with systems and support necessary project operations
+ Lead mechanical design reviews internally and externally with suppliers and customers

**Position Requirements**
+ A degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of 5 years relevant design experience
+ Self-motivated with strong organizational, written, and oral communication skills
+ Proficient and frequent use of hand calculations and computer-aided designs (CAD)
+ Demonstrated understanding of structural and thermal performance, analysis, and failure modes
+ Solid understanding and application of GD&T & tolerance analysis
+ Experience working with PCB designers and hardware manufacturing
+ Facilitation of swift decisions to advance developments. Identify and overcome unclear direction or unanswered questions critical to progress. Reduce complicated development issues to closure.

THE POSITION

WHAT SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE YOU REQUIRE

  • Education: BSc. Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum 5 years of related engineering experience.
  • Possess creativity for product development.
  • General knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Computer knowledge and skills with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Solid Works or similar CAD software.

Duties and Responsibilities of the “Senior Mechanical Design Engineer”

  • Responsible for mechanical design of power transformers from 50 to 200MVA and up to 230kV

  • Review and analysis of client specifications

  • Detailed understanding of power transformer mechanical design (external and internal including electrical clearances), features, shipping and field considerations

  • Understanding of CSA, IEEE and ANSI standards with respect to power transformers

  • Deep understanding of North American utility specifications for power transformers from mechanical design perspective

  • Creation of drawings, bills of material, work instructions and uploading design information to the ERP system

  • Perform engineering analysis of forces, stress and strain, buckling, rupture, electrical clearances, centre of gravity, seismic, vacuum

  • Perform FEA numerical analysis as needed to verify design for stress, strain, buckling, and rupture assessments

  • Anticipate and assist with production processes and procedures to ensure high quality and smooth production

  • Collaborate with team to establish design standards, templates, and automation for the design of transformers at Northern

  • Technical leadership for the business

As our new Mechanical Powertrain Design Engineer, your primary goal is to design, build and test mechanical components for our Extract Energy heat engine solution. We’re looking for someone who can truly own their projects and carry them independently all the way through design, prototyping, testing, and production. Specifically, we're looking for someone with experience in powertrain design, mechanical power transmission and related design for manufacturing and assembly.   Practically speaking, you will: * Design, build, and test everything mechanical, from miniature devices to larger machines, incorporating programmable shape memory alloy technology * Develop and execute verification and validation activities including test plans and building equipment * Support procurement and commissioning of automation, mechanical, and manufacturing equipment for both rapid prototyping and production * Support marketing, business development, production, quality, and research and development efforts You will have the freedom to work on your projects independently, while being responsive to the iterative nature of the work and communicating effectively with rest of the team.   About You You have great technical strength, and you’re more than just book smart – you love digging into projects, getting your hands dirty, and feeling the rush that comes with successfully testing your own creations. We have aggressive growth goals and are looking for someone who can help us get there!     As part of our team, you can expect:   * A full-time, permanent position working in a state-of-the-art facility * Flexible work schedule (40 hrs/week) with core hours between 10:00am – 3:30pm * Competitive salary, commensurate with experience  * Extended Health Benefit package * Opportunities for professional development   Qualifications Here’s what we need: * Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent combination of education and work experience * Minimum of 3-4 years of related product development/manufacturing experience in a mechanical design role * Experience in powertrain design, mechanical power transmission and related design for manufacturing & assembly * Advanced knowledge in 3D design tools such as AutoDesk suite, SolidWorks, etc. * Strong knowledge of manufacturing principles and DFM/A * Strong knowledge of thermomechanical FEA, and experience using FEA software (Comsol or Ansys etc) * Good knowledge of GD&T and tolerance stackups   And here’s what would be an asset: * Background in materials science with experience in shape memory alloys * Experience in an agile research and development environment * Experience with laser processing and advanced manufacturing * Good understanding of fluid dynamics * Strong knowledge of heat transfer, and thermodynamics * Experience with machine design   We strive to build a team that reflects the diversity of the community we work in and encourage applications from traditionally underrepresented groups such as women, visible minorities, Indigenous peoples, people identifying as LGBTQ2SI, veterans, and people with disabilities.
