Who You Are

Mikisew is currently seeking a dedicated and compassionate Mental Health Social Worker . The Mental Health Social Worker is responsible for supporting members of the Mikisew Cree First Nation and their familiesboth on and off reserveby ensuring access to high-quality, culturally appropriate health and wellness services. This role focuses on promoting mental health, enhancing well-being, and connecting individuals with the resources they need in a respectful and inclusive manner.

This position is a hybrid position, split between Fort Chipewyan & Fort McMurray, AB.



Roles & Responsibilities

  • Foster connections with other health and mental wellness professionals, patient navigators, community support workers, and counsellors in the community to provide effective and holistic services to ensure the best possible service delivery for clients.
  • Address system barriers and challenges to accessing care to ensure the effective delivery of inclusive, compassionate, culturally safe, trauma-informed and client-centered care.
  • Build relationships with health and social agencies and provide education and training on cultural safety, cultural humility and factors that affect patient health care.
  • Provide client and community education on treatment centers processes.
  • Advocate to facilitate referrals, aftercare, and treatment services (active State of Local Emergency).
  • Conduct mental health assessments, crisis triage consulting with AHS and hospital consultants for suicide attempts/ideation and find supports for individual(s).
  • Complete safety plans, danger assessments and other necessary assessments to help maintain client safety and guide client management.
  • Maintain accurate statistical information, attend department meetings, submit monthly activity reports and complete funding reporting requirements.
  • Provide education on end-of-life discussions, palliative program support and grief and loss.
  • Identify member needs and make recommendations to the Health Director to support program development.
  • Work with the Health Director to ensure that safety policies and procedures are in place and that a method of documentation is established.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant legislative and policy requirements, including privacy legislation.
  • Always maintain a high level of client privacy and confidentiality in all interactions, including the security of personal health information.
  • Participate in committees and activities that promote members health and wellness, including supporting new initiatives and implementing best practices.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development activities as time and financial resources permit.
  • Demonstrate sound work ethics and professional integrity.
  • Exhibit a positive and professional demeanor in all situations.
  • Ability to deal with confidential and sensitive information and issues and maintain professional and personal boundaries.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in social work from a recognized post-secondary institution. A Masters degree in social work is an asset.
  • Must be a Registered Social Worker in Alberta, be in good standing with the accredited professional body, and be able to provide proof of certification.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of career experience providing counselling services.
  • Progressive management and staff supervisory experience are assets.
  • Additional training in non-violent crisis intervention, conflict management, trauma-informed care, grief and loss therapy, cognitive behaviour therapy and resolution practices is an asset.
  • Current Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), and valid First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Experience working with youth, young adults and families in mental health settings (clinical or other), including experience working with Indigenous populations and in First Nations communities.
  • Knowledge of Adverse Childhood Experiences.
  • Experience working with Indigenous people who have been incarcerated and transitioning back into the community.
  • Knowledge of crisis assessments, concurrent disorders, homelessness, crisis intervention strategies, trauma-informed practice, strengths-based models, and client-centred and recovery-oriented approaches.
  • Knowledge of federal and provincial government health programs and services, community services, specialty programs, resources, health care delivery system and the Non-Insured Health Benefits program.
  • Knowledge of Albertas Virtual Opioid Dependency program.
  • Knowledge of the people, history, culture, and trauma relevant to the communitys health and wellness challenges and the members strengths and resiliency.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the history and cultural practices of the First Nations/Indigenous population, Indigenous health approaches, protocols and cultural issues.
  • Strong knowledge of anti-Indigenous racism initiatives (Joyces Principle), Indigenous Cultural Safety, legislative commitments (Truth and Reconciliation and Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People) and provincial commitments (MMIWG).

  • Completing psycho-social assessments;

Essential Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years counselling the youth population;
  • 3-5 years of recent continuous experience in the assessment, treatment, and management of common mental health problems;
  • Has a strong commitment to a collaborative care model and can work in a team effectively;

  • Active registration and in good standing with Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW), College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP) or Alberta College of Occupational Therapists (ACOT).
  • A minimum of two years of clinical practice in child and family mental health and/or youth addictions.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license and access to a vehicle.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing. 
  • A minimum of three to five years of recent pediatric experience in an ambulatory care setting which has included the care and management of children with mental health problems. Acute care experience in children’s mental health would be an asset.
  • Must be a member in good standing with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Alberta.
  • Knowledge of the Health Information and Protection of Privacy Information Acts in addition to professional organization’s ethics and standards of practice.
  • Respect for and understanding of confidentiality, and an ability to maintain confidentiality regarding personal and sensitive information.
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records or similar information systems.

Responsibilities:

  • As a Mental Health Counsellor, you will play a crucial role in providing direct counselling to Whitefish River First Nation (WRFN) members. Your assessments, treatments, referrals, and follow-ups, which primarily focus on individuals, families, or groups, will be instrumental in addressing mental health and substance use issues in the community.
  • Provide counselling that often relates to crisis, trauma, suicide, domestic violence, sexual, physical, or emotional abuse.
  • Provide or facilitate the provision of services through a culturally based framework
  • Complete screening and comprehensive assessments for issues related to mental health, substance, and behavioural addictions; Develop wholistic, client-centered, individualized treatment plans.

Qualifications:

  • Master's level education and professional membership are an asset (MSW, RSW preferred) or related education at a masters level, such as counseling or psychology, combined with at least 3 years direct experience.
  • Post-graduate Addictions degree, diploma, or equivalent experience would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous Traditional Teachings, Culture, including intergenerational trauma.

  • Knowledge of and ability to use structured screening, assessment, and treatment tools.
  • Experience in the delivery of both individual and group counseling using evidence-informed approaches



Skills:

  • Strong understanding of colonization and its impacts on Anishinaabe communities (Intergenerational Trauma resulting from IRS, Day Schools, 60s Scoop, child welfare, etc.).
  • Ability to make connections with community members; Ability to work and handle confidential and sensitive information.
  • Responding to after-hours emergencies as required; Overtime, evening, and weekends as may be required from time to time.

About the Role
Reporting to the Manager, Triage, Navigation and Transitions the Mental Health Therapist works collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team to ensure the success of clinical service delivery. The Mental Health Therapist will provide timely mental health assessment, treatment service options and interventions to children, adolescents and their families. They will coordinate referral and discharge transitions to programs and services within CASA and the community. They will also promote collaborative relationships with community partners. 

The Mental Health Therapist will:

  • Conduct comprehensive bio-psycho-social-spiritual mental health assessments of assigned children and adolescents.
  • Develop a treatment plan and formulate a diagnosis, when applicable, using the DSM-5-TR and other diagnostic tools as appropriate.
  • Provide therapeutic interventions to support the patient in achieving therapeutic goals utilizing a variety of developmentally appropriate treatment approaches.
  • Make appropriate referrals to in-house program services to inform treatment planning and diagnostic clarification.
  • Carry out case management functions including convening case conferences and liaising with community services and other professionals involved with the patient and family.
  • Be an active and contributing member of a multi-disciplinary clinical team, focused on assessment, treatment, diagnostic formulation and referral services, including transition to community partners and services.
  • Provide preceptorship for student placements.
  • Engage in research and best practice.
  • Comply with CASA standards and vision.
  • Advocate on behalf of the youth and family as appropriate.

Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in psychology, social work or occupational therapy.
  • A minimum of two years of clinical practice in child and family mental health and/or youth addictions.
  • Must be a member in good standing with their respective professional association or college.
  • Strong grasp of the principles of evidence-based practice.
  • Knowledge and experience supporting the healing of children and youth who have experienced trauma.
  • Knowledge and experience in the following therapeutic modalities: cognitive behavioural therapy, family interventions, crisis intervention, solution-focused training, DBT and motivational interviewing.
  • Training and experience in dialectical behaviour therapy would be an asset.

Conditions of Employment
  • A satisfactory Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Search and Child Intervention Check. This would be the financial responsibility of the successful candidate.
  • Ability to pass and maintain Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) certification (training provided by CASA) or Supporting Individuals through Valued Attachments (SIVA) training, as well as physical ability to perform all interventions.

About the Role:
The Trauma Program nurtures connection and safety in the caregiver-child relationship after experiencing trauma. Children and youth may come into the program via one of three streams: the Outpatient Trauma Clinic, the Trauma and Attachment Group (TAG) or Consultative Services.

The Mental Health Therapist will:

  • Conduct comprehensive mental health assessments for assigned children and youth.
  • Develop individualized and family treatment plans in conjunction with the primary team.
  • Formulate diagnoses, when applicable, using the DSM-5-TR and other diagnostic tools.
  • Provide therapeutic interventions to support the patient in achieving therapeutic goals, utilizing a variety of developmentally-appropriate treatment approaches.
  • Facilitate Parent Support Groups and Multi-Family Therapy Groups that are psycho-educational and/or psychodynamic in context, utilizing a variety of evidence-based therapeutic modalities.
  • Contribute to staff knowledge and understanding of provisional program based operations improvement and evaluation.
  • Build specialized parenting skills for caregivers caring for children with exceptional needs.
  • Complete written discharge summaries to referring Therapist and Psychiatrist after patient discharge.
  • Carry out case management functions including convening case conferences, and liaising with community services and other professionals involved with the adolescent and family.

Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in psychology, social work (with psycho-social intervention designation), occupational therapy or nursing.
  • Active registration in good standing with a professional college identified under the Health Professions Act. 
  • A minimum of two years of clinical practice in child and family mental health and/or youth addictions.
  • Knowledge and experience in supporting the healing of children and youth who have experienced trauma.
  • Knowledge and experience in the following therapeutic modalities: EMDR, ART, sensory motor psychotherapy, somatic experiencing, SMART, DBT/CBT and ARC.
  • Training and experience in play therapy is considered an asset.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Valid Class 5 operator’s license and access to a vehicle. 
 

Additional Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of child and adolescent development and the impact of trauma and/or mental illness child development and children’s health and well being.
  • Knowledge and experience in working with caregivers with significant familial intergenerational trauma and/or caregivers with a range of attachment styles.
  • Training and experience in sensory and somatic modalities is considered an asset (e.g., Sensory Motor Arousal and Regulation Therapy).
  • Training and experience in bilateral stimulation based trauma processing(e.g., Accelerated Resolution Therapy or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is considered an asset.
  • Training and experience in attachment focused play-based interventions (e.g., Theraplay) or other play-based intervention and modalities are considered an asset.
  • Experience and training in working with blended, adoptive, foster and kinship families an asset.
