This position plays a key role in enabling business growth by advising on key people initiatives.
This position is critical to support the growth of SMBC Canada Branch's business and will play a key role in policy development & controls as well as strategy execution across the branch. Play a vital role in enabling business growth and profitability by overseeing key HR processes like YE compensation, annual performance review cycles, talent development & succession planning etc.
+ Utilize experience, training, credentials, certifications (i.e. CHRP) and/or education to maintain credibility with business line(s), represent HR on behalf of the entire organization with various stakeholders, and to maintain consultative and relationship building skills, and credibility. Apply overall HR acumen of workforce planning, org design, talent planning, etc. to help drive the best outcomes. Translate internal HR data and analysis into key trends and areas of focus to help lower attrition, increase retention, develop talent, advance diversity efforts, etc. Demonstrate business line acumen and/or sector proficiency to build consensus, credibility and to effectively influence business line leader(s).
+ Understand and confidently convey key industry trends (i.e., career pathing, virtual workforce, employee engagement etc.) and competitive firm benchmarks (i.e., spans of control, levels, senior title promotion rates, etc.) in order to accurately advise internal clients and to ensure the company remains competitive across critical areas of HR.
+ Demonstrate a deep fluency of employment / labor laws, regulators, internal security requirements (i.e., PPI, data security) to help enable compliance across the firm. Demonstrate knowledge of finance-related regulations to better manage and influence business priorities.
+ Provide timely, professional, and accurate resolution to the business line / internal clients regarding operational inquiries and/or standard HR policy and HR system questions. Develop a rapport with and understanding of the various business lines. We are seeking a **Human Resources Student** for our **North American Headquarters** district in **Edmonton, Alberta** , that is available for **4 or 8 months** starting in **September 2025** . The Human Resources Student role supports our HR programs, providing an exciting opportunity to support the enterprise and gain experience in various HR facets such as career management, employee engagement, HR analytics, change management, etc.
As a **Human Resources Student** and depending on your assigned project, you will have the opportunity to contribute to our team by:
+ Assists the team in the delivery of enterprise-wide HR programs in talent management, career development, and employee engagement.
+ Manages student engagement through the management of our student blog and other student engagement initiatives.
+ Supports the administration of HR programs, including project coordination and change management efforts.
+ Composes correspondence, prepares reports, and researches current HR trends and best practices.
+ Participates in various HR projects and initiatives, providing support as needed across the team.
+ Coordinates events and meetings, including scheduling, preparing materials, tracking action items, and ensuring timely follow-ups.
**What you will bring to the role:**
+ Pursuing a degree or diploma with a Human Resources, Strategy, Entrepreneurship and Management, or similar focus.
+ Must be proactive in terms of anticipating needs and follow-up items for the project team. Proficient in Microsoft office products such as Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Access.
+ Must have excellent planning and organizational skills.
+ Ability to maintain confidentiality required of work assignments and is independent and resourceful to accomplish day- to-day tasks and assignments.
+ Must have excellent verbal, written, and grammatical skills.
+ Must demonstrate initiative and the ability to handle multiple tasks and changing priorities under tight deadlines, while maintaining a high degree of accuracy and professionalism

This role involves analyzing and improving HR programs, working on change management, employee engagement, and program development. You will also provide HR support to small districts, balancing day-to-day matters while contributing to organizational broader goals.
Here's how a Human Resources Advisor for our Edmonton NAHQ office contributes to our team:
**Responsibilities**
+ Analyze HR metrics and produce strategic reports for leadership, including quarterly reporting, engagement survey action planning, and the annual sector review
+ Conduct research and provide recommendations to inform HR program development and continuous improvement across the sector
+ Support, plan, and administer key sector HR programs, including Mentorship, Internal Leadership, and the student Scholarship Program
+ Prepare district HR teams for annual processes such as performance management, compensation review, and succession planning
+ Support change management efforts to ensure the successful implementation of HR initiatives
+ Contribute to equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts through observance guides, environmental scans, research, and reporting
+ Provide full-cycle HR support to a small district as needed

**Qualifications**

+ Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills, particularly in managing data, documentation, and program logistics
+ Strong report writing and research skills, with the ability to analyze and present HR data clearly and effectively
+ Excellent written and oral communication skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Excel and PowerPoint); SharePoint expertise is required; InDesign is an asset
