Key Responsibilities:

  • Case management services to support the academic success, inclusion and school attendance of FN, Metis and Inuit students.
  • Providing culturally appropriate individual and group-based activities and resources to students, families and schools.
  • Outreach and support to educational systems and community agencies to increase their capacity to respond to the learning and cultural needs of FN, Metis and Inuit students.
  • Developing strategies to facilitate increased participation by parents and students in achieving academic success, well-being and inclusion.
  • Establishing a reciprocal relationship with school boards and school staff to create safe learning and social environments for students
  • Identifying gaps in the academic achievement of students and in their access to needed supports.
  • Recommending and connecting clients with schools-based supports.
  • Referring clients and collaborating with educational and healthcare professionals, community service providers and others to address the psychosocial and socioeconomic needs of students.
  • Assessing students’ emotional and behavioural needs and providing social work interventions, advocacy and referrals to meet these needs.
  • Providing informal counseling and support to help families build caregiving skills as needed.
  • Maintaining and updating files in accordance with NCFST’s policies and procedures.
  • increase capacity of schools to respond to the learning and cultural needs of students including those related to self identification, aboriginal perspective, values and cultures
  • provide culturally appropriate programs, services, and resources to help schools create learning opportunities for students that support improved academic achievement and identity building
  • provide education/workshops that facilitate learning about contemporary and traditional culture, healing practices, histories and perspectives to students, school board staff, teachers, elected trustees and parents
  • develop strategies to facilitate increased participation by parents and students in achieving academic success, well-being and inclusion.
  • establish a reciprocal relationship with school board and staff to create a safe learning and social environment for students
  • identify and address disparities and gaps in the achievement of students and in their access to needed supports and resources including gaps in aboriginal subject material in curriculum
  • provision of case mgt services to students with suspected or diagnosed mental health issues
  • Other duties related to the program’s mandate as assigned by the Supervisor.


Minimum Qualifications and Skills:

Experience And Skilled Knowledge Requirements:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Indigenous culture(s) and of education for Indigenous school aged children in Toronto.
  • Strong understanding of Indigenous approaches to healing and culture.
  • Post Secondary education in a relevant field and experience working with Indigenous children and parents
  • A willingness to complete and pass a Vulnerable Sector Police Records Check.
  • Knowledge of child development, family systems and mental health services.
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Preferred Skills/Capabilities
    The candidate should be familiar with and be able to contribute to a team approach with respect to effective service delivery and be able to develop and maintain effective helping relationships with students, parents and school administration.
  • Access to a vehicle and a valid drivers license is not required but would be an asset.
