Your Opportunity
In the role of the Civil Engineer, this individual will be responsible for leading projects with support from a Senior Engineer with the design delivery of larger scale or multi-disciplinary land development, municipal and transportation projects for our expanding list of clients. The projects that a Civil Engineer will be assigned to may have complex features that will require the application of mature knowledge and engineering judgement.
The Stantec Community Development group in British Columbia provides services to both private and public sector clients across the province. While focusing on work in British Columbia, the successful candidate will also have opportunities to collaborate with our Canada West Community Development teams and support their project needs as opportunities arise. Your Key Responsibilities
Land development is a complex endeavor that requires understanding of multiple engineering, urban planning, landscape architecture and construction disciplines. It involves bringing the best ideas from each discipline and weaving them together to create great communities for our clients and for future residents. The details of the plans and designs must be supported by the local municipalities approving authority and working closely with their representatives is instrumental in the efficient advancement of the design and construction process. We are seeking team members who know how to navigate this exciting environment. Please see the responsibilities below:
- Perform civil design using knowledge of relevant software programs.
- Complete the civil design for infill, greenfield, and brownfield land development, municipal and public space projects, and/or transportation focused projects in support of our Airports, Transit & Rail, or Ports & Marines teams.
- Lead small to medium scale projects.
- Review and prepare civil designs for site grading and site servicing including water distribution, sanitary sewers, storm water management, shallow utilities, and erosion control design.
- Prepare due diligence reports and land reviews providing knowledge on overall servicing for potential land purchases for our client base.
- Build and foster relationships with clients, municipal, and provincial approving authorities.
- Provide mentorship, training, and guidance to junior and design technical staff.
- Contribute and provide guidance in project coordination meetings with internal team members and/or external consultants, clients, and other various project stakeholders.
- Complete field reviews as necessary during the construction administration phase of own projects
- Participate in quality assurance and quality control review on own projects and projects of peers.
- Assist in the development of new standards and processes for the design team.
- Contribute to the development of proposals and the development of project scope and fees through a design focused lens.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Must have a thorough understanding of land development including site grading, sanitary and storm sewer servicing, water servicing, shallow utility coordination, roadway, lot design, as well as a general understanding of stormwater engineering concepts.
- Experience in the province of British Columbia is strongly preferred.
- Understanding of the life cycle of land development projects from the land review stage through to permits, servicing agreements, tender, construction and project close-out.
- Must be a self-motivated individual possessing strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Take a solution-oriented approach to solving problems.
- Participates and collaborates in project team setting and able to engage in creative and critical thought.
- Experience in a flexible work environment, managing multiple projects, clients and deliverables.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, BlueBeam Revu.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
- Registered as a Professional Engineer in good standing with EGBC.
- Minimum of 6 years of experience.
Position will primarily work in an office setting. Stantec is also prepared with the infrastructure available to support individuals working from home. Field work may be required and may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

The Ontario First Nations Technical Services Corporation (OFNTSC) is a nonprofit organization that provides technical advisory services, training, and capacity development to First Nations communities in Ontario. By offering a wide range of specialized services and expertise, OFNTSC helps to enhance the quality of life, promote self-sufficiency, and foster economic growth within these communities.

The Civil Engineer position assists and advises First Nations in all areas of civil engineering, including studies, design, construction, and project management. Typical projects include water and wastewater infrastructure, roads, drainage, solid waste, housing and buildings, including schools, as well as project management.

These tasks must be executed in alignment with the culture and values of OFNTSC while maintaining strict confidentiality.


Responsibilities:

  • Technical knowledge and experience in the project management, design, and construction of civil/municipal infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, schools, water and sewage treatment plants, distribution/collection systems, and community buildings.
  • Review studies and design drawings for compliance with legislation, codes, standards, best practices, and guidelines, and provide advisory services on issues related to capital infrastructure projects.
  • Liaise with and advise Tribal Councils, Large First Nations, and Unaffiliated First Nations regarding existing and proposed projects, both capital and operational, and maintenance.
  • Assist First Nations with the federal and provincial funding approval process for minor and major capital projects and operations and maintenance projects.
  • Provide project management services through monitoring project status, including budget and schedule, and provide advice to First Nations
  • Be aware of and apply current regulations and guidelines relevant to facility design and operation and maintenance, and construction, including health and safety.
  • Assist with funding applications and the coordination of work once funding is secure.
  • Assist First Nations with retaining consultants in a competitive manner once funding is secured through developing design terms of references and assisting with the design consultant selection process.
  • Complete other special projects, as may be assigned, including needs analysis, training course development, and presentations at OFNTSC workshops.
  • Review all submissions from consultants and contractors, including consultant proposals, designs, construction quotations, and tenders.
  • Assist with Conference and workshop-related activities.
  • Act as a Liaison between First Nations and government agencies and assist with obtaining various sources of funding.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering (Civil or Structural preferred) and registration with Professional Engineers Ontario is required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of P.Eng experience.
  • Project Management and/or public works management experience is considered an asset.
  • Willing to travel throughout Ontario, and valid drivers license.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong ability and understanding of computer applications and software, including Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of First Nations aspirations and culture, and experience with First Nations are considered an asset.

Conditions:

  • Some out-of-town traveling is required through the province of Ontario.
  • Reliable and insured vehicle and Valid Class G Ontario drivers license.

Your Opportunity
An opportunity currently exists for a Senior Civil Engineer in our Calgary Water Group. The right candidate will have management and technical skills suited to lead and participate in the delivery of water conveyance projects for municipal, industrial and private sector clients. Projects may include greenfield infrastructure, expansion/upgrades to existing systems, trenchless installations and rehabilitation. It is expected that the Senior Civil Engineer will have significant knowledge and experience working on similar projects, leading teams and client facing. As a Senior Civil Engineer your work will include undertaking engineering studies, analysis, engineering design and document preparation, construction contract administration, field work and/or field inspections as required, project and/or task management, senior reviews, leading technical teams. You may act as a project and/or task manager, leading technical teams, coordinate/delegate tasks for other team members, ensure delivery, resource efficiency and cost-effectiveness and mentor junior/intermediate staff as skills dictate.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Manage internal and external client expectations and relationships.
- Support marketing and business development activities in positioning for potential projects, writing proposals or technical portions of multidisciplinary proposals.
- Conduct quality assurance and quality control reviews of technical deliverables (e.g. drawings, reports, etc.), including the evaluation of the completed work for accuracy and completeness.
- Understand and implement industry standards and manuals as well as client and regulatory agency standards and requirements.
- Conduct alternative analyses to support business case evaluations for making project decisions.
- Participate and lead in the design as skills dictate to ensure efficient project delivery, and take professional responsibility for deliverables (e.g. Engineer-of-Record).
- Implement understanding of discipline-specific construction elements as they relate to design to select construction methods and defining work area limits.
- Provide mentoring to other developing technical staff and engineers-in-training.
- Engage in leadership in Professional organizations that align with your expertise; write technical papers and deliver technical presentations for conferences.
- Assist and/or lead the development of proposals.
- Participate in the civil design of water related projects and provide technical leadership for:
- Municipal and industrial conveyance infrastructure (potable water distribution, sanitary and storm sewer systems, and related components).
- Site grading designs.
- Site development and servicing plans.
- Fulfill the Project Technical Lead role on water projects and acts as a technical resource as appropriate.
- Work collaboratively with the project team members, and undertake engineering studies, engineering design and document preparation.
- Managing projects and/or Tasks, administering contracts and controlling schedule and budgets.
- Lead the delivery of assigned tasks including coordination with project design teams and various discipline professionals.
- Lead contract document preparation, including detailed design drawings, construction cost estimates, design reports and specifications.
- Lead construction administration activities, and or field work/field inspections as required.
- Provide mentoring to developing technical staff.
- Developing and maintaining client relationships.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Proven civil design (water conveyance, earthworks/grading, drainage, utilities, etc.) experience on water infrastructure projects.
- Experience leading technical teams.
- Demonstrated knowledge of civil engineering principals.
- Excellent communication, written, and presentation skills.
- Collaborative in nature, with ability to work with multi-disciplinary teams.
- Understanding of all phases of project implementation, and strong understanding of engineering design processes.
- Previous experience working one-on-one with clients, or public speaking will be considered an asset.
- Experience in client-facing roles.
- Experience in proposal writing.
- Experience with the use of Microsoft Office software suite. Experience with Microsoft Project is an asset.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent.
- Minimum of 15 years of consulting experience, primarily in municipal infrastructure, with a minimum of 10 years experience in the delivery of civil/municipal infrastructure projects (conveyance of water, storm and wastewater.)
- Registered with APEGA as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.)
- Positive working relationships with clients. Good relationships with City of Calgary Water Resources group will be considered an asset.
