The ARC is hiring! We are currently looking to fill the part-time positionof Animal Care/Herdsperson to tend the animals in the ARC (Advanced Reproductive Centre) facility. The position is Monday to Friday morning and late afternoon, with every other weekend shifts from 6-8am and 4-6pm shifts.

Duties:

  • Responsible for the timely feeding, cleaning, and care of animals within the IVF and other reproductive programs, that creates an overall wellbeing to maintain elite standards and results.
  • Responsible to bring to the attention of management any concerns of injury, sickness, or any other matter that pertains to the wellbeing of any animal within the reproductive programs.
  • Assist on routine herd health matters, and introduction of new animals into the system.
  • Maintenance and safe use of equipment and machinery (skid steer, blowers etc.)

Dimensions

  • Working weekday and alternating weekend shifts, with responsibilities to basic chore work for the upkeep of good livestock husbandry, plus any additional tasks that are required in the best interest of the ARC.
  • Safe care and operation of any machinery to be used, after correct instruction.

Skill requirements

  • Proven and demonstrated animal husbandry experience
  • Ability to communicate on all levels
  • Appreciates the importance of good documentation
  • Ability to work under a specified system without supervision.
  • Recognized basic animal welfare with regards to sickness or injury, exercising due attention to each individual animal.
  • Can observe and access animal behavior, e.g. heat detection.

Position Purpose

Reporting to the Associate-Supervisor, Animal Care Operations (Aquatics), the incumbent participates in the delivery of the program of animal care in order to maintain Animal Care and Veterinary Service's (ACVS) high standards of animal care and welfare and regulatory compliance. Responsibilities will include daily animal feeding and observation, tank cleaning, conducting water quality tests, facility maintenance and routine sanitation procedures.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Perform daily behaviour and health observation of fish and other aquatic animals. Monitor and record environmental parameters of the animal housing system and room.
  • Reviewing animal use protocols, ensuring the provision of suitable husbandry care and enrichment aligned with specific protocol requirements, and adhering to protocol-specified procedures.
  • Assist facility manager in initiation and maintenance of accurate and complete animal clinical case records, document retention and archiving. Monitor treatment and progress and provide feedback to the veterinarian and/or Animal Care Committee and research staff.
  • Assist facility manager in ensuring proper facility maintenance.
  • Ensure accuracy of inventory checks and checklists.
  • Ensure daily communications with researchers, animal users, animal care staff and facility manager regarding animal health and welfare.

What you will bring:

  • Post-secondary education in aquaculture, or a related field is required.
  • Minimum two (2) years of relevant work experience is required.
  • Must have in-depth knowledge of water supply, distribution and treatment systems, as well as RAS (Recirculating Aquaculture Systems) and all related housing equipment. The successful candidate should be capable of troubleshooting problems and promptly reporting any unresolved issues to the facility manager.
  • Prior knowledge of large coral tank maintenance is highly desirable.
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and be able to adhere to written Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Solid ability to work independently while being able to function well in a team environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and apply relevant solutions to problems such as animal health problems, daily task conflict or water treatment units' failure.
  • Strong ability to adapt to fit changed circumstances in the workplace such as adjusting your actions in response to operational shifting priorities, system failure, etc.
  • Willingness and ability to work after hours, evenings, weekends and statutory holidays as assigned as well as the ability to be on-call 24/7 for at least two weeks per month.

Working closely with the Manager, you’ll be responsible for the day-to-day operations in the barn. This includes a variety of physical tasks such as pushing, pulling, bending, lifting (up to 25kg), and continuous walking. Your daily responsibilities will include:

  • Feeding and providing general care for pigs.
  • Maintaining herd health and clean and safe environment for pigs.
  • Pressure washing and preparing rooms for animal entry.
  • Performing minor maintenance and sanitation tasks.
  • Completing clerical duties such as maintaining door charts, inventory trackers, and ordering feed and medication.
  • Following all health and safety policies and adhering to Canada Packers’ SOPs for humane animal treatment.
What you’ll bring:
  • Commitment to wearing proper PPE and following safety protocols.
  • Availability for weekend, holiday, and alarm shifts on a rotational basis.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to a rural location.
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle multiple priorities and complex tasks simultaneously.
  • Strong communication skills (oral and written)
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Alignment with Canada Packers’ Leadership Values and Code of Conduct.
  • Experience in hog production is an asset.
