Position Summary/Objective:

As an Automation Engineering Specialist, you are responsible for designing, implementing, and optimizing automated systems, while leading and supporting automation initiatives across various industrial projects. This role requires staying up to date with the best practices and emerging solutions in the market. The automation engineering specialist will lead the design and implementation of new automated solutions in collaboration with operations, OEMs and local integrators to enhance operational efficiency, quality and reliability. The automation engineering specialist will participate in process improvements by modifying automation systems and ensuring integration between the existing and new machinery as needed.

  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders, OEMs and integrators to achieve project goals.
  • Conduct risk assessments and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Lead the implementation of SCADA systems for both existing and new lines or machinery to gather performance data that supports the decision-making process.
  • Develop and continuously update automation URS (User Requirement Specifications) for new assets.
  • Design automation systems and control network architectures in collaboration with OEMs for new machinery. Perform hardware and software selection based on project requirements and Riverside automation standards.
  • Lead and support the IO testing, dry commissioning and wet commissioning of new machinery.
  • Design the automation integration of new assets in existing production lines.
  • Provide technical support and training to operations and maintenance teams. Participate in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) on complicated and/or recurring automation failures.
  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation, including electrical diagrams, control network diagrams, manuals, functional descriptions, automation devices backups.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Reporting Relationships

  • This position reports directly to the Engineering Manager

Key Qualifications/Requirements

  • Completion of Control/Automation or Electrical Engineering program and certification or equivalent qualification
  • Minimum of 6 years in an automation role with:
    • Min. 2 years of experience preferably in industrial or manufacturing environments
    • Min. 4 years of experience leading automation projects in the industry
  • Strong knowledge of control system and control network design.
  • Familiarity with robotics, motion control, and vision systems is a plus.
  • Knowledge and experience working with SCADA platforms.
  • Proficiency in PLC, HMI, VFD, servo drives and industrial network devices programming.
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong project management and organization abilities
  • Capable of following technical direction while also demonstrating the ability to work independently and collaboratively in team environments.
  • Possess strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, with a results-oriented and highly organized approach.
  • Proficiency in reading, analyzing, and interpreting electrical drawings, P&ID drawings, and control network drawings.
  • Working experience with equipment such as vertical wrapper, horizontal wrappers, robotics pick and place, tunnel oven is an asset.

Requirements

  • University degree in Engineering, Math, or Computer Science

The Director will collaborate closely with the Director of Operations, Branch Managers across North America, a team of direct reports (Business Development Managers), and the Vice President of Sales. Together, they will drive the growth of Process Automation sales within targeted accounts. Our primary focus will be on specific industries, including Oil & Gas, Chemical, Agriculture, and other continuous processes. The Director will effectively coordinate marketing, sales, solution development, and account management efforts with JMP Business Units dedicated to serving these industries.


What Would a Typical Day Look Like?

General Management and Planning Group Participation

  • Achieve business targets on a regular and consistent basis (referred to as the sales operating plan).
  • Planning Group participation – Be a key participant in the development and execution of the Divisional Sales operating plan for the current and upcoming fiscal years. This includes JMP’s Strategic Planning Management Process (SPM) where we define and set our annual and three-year objectives and goals.
  • Collaborate with other managers to develop business plans for different verticals and service areas as well as support cross sell across the Convergix platform.
  • Work with strategic partners to assist in annual joint account planning initiatives.
  • Develop business relationships with targeted customers and influencers in the process control space.
  • As part of Sales Leadership Team – provide advice, guidance, and feedback to the Vice President of Sales, as well as to the Executive Team as needed.

Business Development and Account Management

  • Assist in developing the annual sales target plan for specified Business Units. Therefore, meet and exceed sales targets on a quarterly basis, including pipeline development targets and metrics.
  • Lead the growth of new Process Automation opportunities from existing and target accounts across North America.
  • In conjunction with the Vice President of Sales, develop an account based bookings plan to approach new and current contacts regarding JMP capabilities and offerings (drive and build upon the JMP Sales Process).
  • Participate in marketing activities such as trade shows, seminars, and content development for web materials, white papers, and specific target account collaterals.
  • Provide input to other Business Development Managers to develop solution marketing concepts and plan.

Solution Development

  • Provide input and/or leadership to develop vertical solution concepts.

Purpose of the Position:

IEM is currently seeking an Automation Process Engineer with experience in wire fabrication, design specifications, technology and process expertise. The Automation Process Engineer will revolutionize/revamp our wire processing and assembly operations. In this role, you’ll lead exciting initiatives that elevate automation to improve our production capabilities.

This role will report into our Sr. Manager of Process Engineering. The preferred locations for this role is to be based out of our Jacksonville, FL office or Surrey, B.C. Travel will be required and dependent on project demands - ~30%


Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, and optimize state-of-the-art automated equipment and systems that transform how we process and assemble wire products. Your innovations will directly boost efficiency, precision, and quality across our operations.
  • Dive deep into existing processes to uncover inefficiencies and bottlenecks. Then bring your ideas to life by streamlining workflows, cutting cycle times, and reducing waste through smart, scalable automation solutions.
  • Take the lead on maintaining and upgrading our automated wire processing equipment. Work hands-on with vendors and service teams to ensure our systems stay ahead of the curve and perform at their best.
  • Collaborate closely with the process engineering teams and production teams to integrate automation seamlessly into daily operations. You’ll also train and support operators and maintenance staff, ensuring everyone is confident and capable with new technology.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to successfully integrate new automation solutions with our existing infrastructure to ensure sure everything works together in harmony.
  • Keep our automation systems aligned with company standards and industry regulations, with a strong focus on safety and quality.
  • Stay on the pulse of automation trends and wire processing technology. Bring fresh insights and lead initiatives that elevate our performance, reduce costs, and drive continuous improvement.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Industrial, Manufacturing Engineering, Electrical or Mechatronics Engineering; Master’s degree or technical certifications (e.g., Lean Six Sigma Black Belt) strongly preferred.
  • 5–10+ years of progressive experience in a manufacturing engineering role
  • 3+ years of experience of automation engineering, wire processing a plus!
  • Strong knowledge in wire processing equipment and techniques (crimping, cutting, stripping, and terminating machines)
  • Hands-on experience with automation technologies, robotics, PLCs, or related systems in a production environment.
  • Strong knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Standard Work, Six Sigma, value stream mapping, and continuous improvement tools.
  • Demonstrated career ambition with a track record of growth and increasing responsibility; highly promotable with the potential to take on broader leadership roles within a fast-paced, high-growth organization

We are seeking a highly motivated and technically strong Co-op Student to join our Corporate IT team this fall (September to December 2025). This role is a unique opportunity for a student with a background in data science, computer engineering, or software development who is also passionate about helping others adopt AI in their work.

As a Co-op Student in AI & Automation, you will collaborate with teams across Giatec, many of whom are less technical, to help them leverage AI tools and automation in meaningful ways. Youll identify opportunities, build prototypes, and serve as a bridge between technical expertise and everyday workflows. Your enthusiasm for AI, strong technical skills, and outgoing personality will help spark adoption and make a measurable impact across the company.


WHAT WILL YOU DO?

  • Partner with non-technical teams to understand their workflows and uncover opportunities where AI and automation can improve efficiency.
  • Design, prototype, and implement internal AI-driven tools, scripts, or workflows to support productivity.
  • Provide hands-on guidance and training to help colleagues confidently adopt and use AI solutions.
  • Work with structured and unstructured datasets to support automation and analytics initiatives.
  • Apply machine learning, natural language processing, or workflow automation frameworks when appropriate.
  • Document solutions clearly to ensure scalability and reusability.
  • Share outcomes and recommendations with IT and business stakeholders in an approachable and engaging way.



WHAT DO YOU BRING TO THE ROLE?

  • Currently enrolled in a Master of Science (Data Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related program).
  • Available for a 4 month co-op/internship (September to December)
  • Strong programming skills in Python (preferred), R, or JavaScript.
  • Hands-on experience working with LLM APIs (e.g., OpenAI API, Anthropic Claude, etc.) to build prototypes, assistants, or workflow integrations.
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or similar) and an understanding of how to use them effectively in development.
  • Exposure to agentic workflows or orchestration frameworks(e.g., LangChain, LlamaIndex, semantic automation tools) is an asset.
  • Comfortable leveraging AI productivity tools (e.g., document automation, chat-based research, summarization).
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts into clear, accessible language for non-technical users.
  • Outgoing, curious, and passionate about AI, with the ability to inspire colleagues to experiment with and adopt new tools.

What Youll be Doing!

As a Control Systems Developer, you will contribute to complex engineering projects and products through designing, coding, testing, and maintaining software applications using object oriented programming, industrial programming, communication protocols and more!


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Design, create and maintain product-centric functional PLC and HMI programs.
  • Support and maintain development through all stages of the CI/CD lifecycle
  • Identifying and implementing operational improvements
  • Create and apply innovative algorithms for mechanical and electrical system controls
  • Implementing changes to existing and creating new engineering designs with respect to control systems hardware and software
  • Conduct code reviews, regression testing, end-to-end testing, debugging, and more
  • Contribute to projects and post-deployment activities by providing technical documentation, adhering to coding standards, and troubleshooting issues.
  • Execute on-site control system and software commissioning at global rail locations


Who are you?:

  • 5+ years of experience in controls and/or software development
  • A related degree or diploma inElectrical, Mechatronics, Control or Electronic
  • Experienced in all phases of the development life cycle
  • Strong technical writing and documentation skills
  • Proficient in PLCs (Siemens, Rockwell, etc.)
  • Profound understanding of control algorithms and design practices
  • Knowledgeable in industrial communication protocols (Profinet, Modbus, CAN etc.)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to communicate to an array of technical and non-technical audiences
  • Passion for learning and keeping up to date with new technologies
  • Ability to travel and work in industrial environments
