How you help the team:
Technical Responsibilities
- Supervises and coordinates activities or workers engaged in mixing, dividing, molding, and proofing of dough, and in baking, slicing and wrapping of bread, pastries and other bakery products.
- Ensure the quality of products meets established standards.
- Determine and maintain sufficient levels of inventory to meet customer demand while minimizing investment in inventory.
- Ensure displays are in place.
- Ensure that the Bakery presents a clean and neat appearance, and offers a safe, pleasant, and attractive place to shop.
- Ensure proper inventory methods are understood and being followed.
- Enforces and follows the company's food safety and bakery cleaning and sanitization standards.
- Administrative tasks such as reviewing invoices, ordering, and documenting process and procedures.
- Adhering to all food safety protocols, standard operating procedures, health and safety policies, and other programs and initiatives.
- Other duties as required.
Financial
- Assists with department plans and budgets, including labour budgets achieved through effective scheduling, measuring results, allocating resources, reviewing progress, and making mid-course corrections as required.
- Assists with payroll for the department.
Team Building
- Builds a strong, cohesive team where employees feel they contribute and are valued.
- Grows their team and empowers employees to make decisions on their own.
- Delegates responsibilities to their employees
- Identifies key performers and provides opportunities for growth, development, and advancement.
Staffing
- Supervises the work of the bakery employees.
- Ensures schedules are completed and posted for employees in a timely manner.
- In conjunction with Human Resources, recruits and selects new bakery staff.
- Holds monthly staff meetings to keep employees informed of operations and company news.
Employee Relations
- Provides employee with regular feedback, coaching & training, and performance evaluation.
- Follows up with staff on any breach of company policy and ensure proper progressive discipline forms are completed.
Training and Development
- Provides standardized training for all new and existing employees, including health and safety.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Alberta Food Handling/Food Safety Certificate required.
- High School or GED from an accredited school system or program is preferred.
- Certified Baker.
Experience
- Minimum four years experience in a bakery environment.
- Past supervisory experience is considered an asset.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledgeable in commercial bakery equipment
- Excellent listening skills and communication skills, both verbal and written
- Ability to work under pressure, while maintaining a professional image at all times
- Work independently with little direct supervision.
- Have a well-balanced concern for both task and people.
- Ability to delegate duties and responsibilities.
- Have a genuine concern for needs of customers.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Job requires employee to work a variety of shifts including mornings, days, evenings, weekends and holidays.
- Also required to work with challenging customers and/or situations.
- Tasks are performed in varying temperatures (i.e. near stoves and ovens, in and out of refrigerators and freezers)
- Required to work around baking ingredients such as flour, nuts, etc.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Job requires a variety of standing, walking and sitting.

- Work with the Store Manager and Retail Specialist to execute strategies aimed at successfully accomplishing stated goals (e.g. financial results).
- Team development, interviewing, training, reviews, coaching, motivation and recognition all while maintaining a high level of confidentiality and trust.
- Consistent and effective communication to lead the team, including one-on-one coaching, huddles, metrics, product knowledge and corporate policies and procedures.
- Responsible for retail operations and deliverables (e.g. inventory, ordering, item maintenance, quality and rotation, shrink, merchandising, invoicing, scheduling, payroll).
- Participate in store coverage rotation as a Manager on Duty (eg. opening/closing store, alarm system emergency contact support) as directed by the Store Manager.
- Ensure compliance with Safe Food Handling regulations as well as Health and Safety policies and procedures.
- May be requested to undertake other related duties on a periodic basis.
- Typically requires completion of a post-secondary program with an emphasis in business, plus a minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible supervisory or management experience in a similar role or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Successful completion of a Public Health Food Handler certification, Smart Serve plus Level A First Aid and Basic CPR certification, or the commitment to complete within 6 months.
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal and analytical skills.
- Clear and effective communication style, both written and oral.
- Good judgment and decision-making abilities while communicating with customers and Farm Boy team members.
- Ability to learn manual and automated systems/tools.
- Skilled at working in a fast-paced environment while maintaining priorities and a high level of performance.
- Flexible schedule, including weekends, evenings and holidays.
- Fluency in English and French shall be considered an asset.
