Job Type: Part-time. Hourly.
Salary - $21-24/hr
Job setting: Community-based in Markham, Toronto, and Leaside area. Travel is required.
Schedule: Varied hours based on demands
- Daytime in Leaside and nearby homes and communities
- Evening sessions till 7:30pm EST in Markham or Toronto
- Saturdays till 4PM EST in Markham

- Prepare and conduct comprehensive (intensive) ABA therapy sessions
- Collect and graph data
- Maintain client binders and materials
- Maintain daily written communication logs with family and other staff
- Demonstrate therapy sessions to families and other professionals as required

- Uphold Centre policies and procedures
- Attend training sessions, workshops, online courses, etc. as set out by Monarch House
- Attend Monarch House social and public events
Here is what you will need to be successful
- Positive attitude, organized, and passion for learning
- Registered Behavior Technician™ (RBT™) certification or willingness to complete training for RBT certification (within 3 mos.)
- Willing to complete Criminal record check with Vulnerable Sector Screening
- Must be open to 2-3 evening shifts a week
- Must be open to travelling on a daily basis with access to a reliable vehicle
- Legally authorized to work in Canada

As a Mental Health Counsellor, you will have the unique opportunity to provide effective and comprehensive assessments, counselling, and case management to community members of Whitefish River First Nation (WRFN) who are living with mental health and/or substance use issues. This role, which is part of an interdisciplinary care team, also involves collaborating with internal and external service providers, making it a dynamic and rewarding position.
Responsibilities:
- As a Mental Health Counsellor, you will play a crucial role in providing direct counselling to Whitefish River First Nation (WRFN) members. Your assessments, treatments, referrals, and follow-ups, which primarily focus on individuals, families, or groups, will be instrumental in addressing mental health and substance use issues in the community.
- Provide counselling that often relates to crisis, trauma, suicide, domestic violence, sexual, physical, or emotional abuse.
- Provide or facilitate the provision of services through a culturally based framework
- Complete screening and comprehensive assessments for issues related to mental health, substance, and behavioural addictions; Develop wholistic, client-centered, individualized treatment plans.
- Facilitate individual and group counseling sessions focused on improved health and wellness using evidence-informed therapeutic techniques, and coordinate access and referrals to local community resources.
Qualifications:
- Master's level education and professional membership are an asset (MSW, RSW preferred) or related education at a masters level, such as counseling or psychology, combined with at least 3 years direct experience.
- Post-graduate Addictions degree, diploma, or equivalent experience would be an asset.
- Knowledge of Indigenous Traditional Teachings, Culture, including intergenerational trauma.
- 3-5 years of experience working with the Indigenous community using a wholistic model to incorporate traditional beliefs, values, and culture-based practices into the therapeutic work to promote wellness and healing.
- 3-5 years of experience working with mental health, including providing trauma-informed care.
- 3-5 years of experience and/or education in working with substance and/or behavioural addictions, including: concurrent disorders, stages of change, motivational interviewing, harm reduction, and relapse prevention.
- Knowledge of and ability to use structured screening, assessment, and treatment tools.
- Experience in the delivery of both individual and group counseling using evidence-informed approaches
Skills:

SCOPE:
The Mental Health Worker will provide wholistic services that meet the needs of Indigenous women and their families through a range of services focusing on mental, physical, spiritual and emotional well-being through a cultural, trauma-informed, gender based and family centered approach.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum degree in Counselling, Social Work, Mental Health or equivalent and a registered social worker. A degree is preferred.
- 3-5 years experience counselling Indigenous populations in mental health, trauma and substance abuse issues including advocating and supporting Indigenous women and/or Indigenous families.
- 3-5 years experience with mental health program development and delivery.
- 3-5 years experience working with Indigenous populations in mental health and substance use issues.
- Knowledge of Indigenous culture, traditions, ceremony and connecting Community Members to cultural practices that can be used as support.
- Thorough knowledge and experience working in and with a gender based lens/perspective.
- Strong understanding of major behavioral, emotional and mental health problems and disorders of Indigenous women and their families (Including children and youth).
- In-depth understanding of psychological, social and cognitive development.
- Ability to provide evidence based counselling support services.
- Awareness of the recent, historical and intergenerational trauma that Indigenous women and their families may have experienced, including the psychological, neurological, physiological, social and spiritual impact of trauma.
- Understanding of the principles of cultural trauma-informed care and wise practices in providing trauma-informed care.
- Must be dependable, able to follow instructions, respond to management direction and be able to improve performance through management feedback.
- Capacity to solve problems and to see different perspectives.
- Ability to plan, organize and manage time effectively.
- Highly motivated individual with the ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills and an ability to follow through on assigned duties independently with strict deadlines.
- Knowledge of Not-For Profit Organizations
- Proficient working knowledge of MS Office Software, internet, and general office equipment.
- Ability to travel.
- Reliable vehicle, appropriate vehicle insurance coverage and valid Ontario G class drivers license.
- Current, valid vulnerable sector criminal records check. Valid 1st Aid/CPR.
- A cellular phone and internet access is required within this position.
- Must be willing and able to work a flexible working from home arrangement if required. This may include a combination of virtual remote work in your home and in office arrangements. This will be based on operational needs and will be determined by the ONWA.
- Ability to speak an Indigenous Language is considered an asset.

The full salary range for this role is 49,500 - 60,778. ONWA conducts annual performance reviews, and employees may be eligible for salary adjustments based on performance outcomes and available funding.
