This role requires full-time on-site presence.

Your role

We break stories at CBC News in Quebec and are first to deliver developing news. We prioritize original journalism, finding the angles that matter to our audience, and telling stories that are rooted in the English-speaking communities across the province. We put people at the center of our journalism.

Reporting to the Managing Editor of CBC News in Quebec, the Executive Producer leads a team of approximately 100 people who produce news and current affairs programming for radio, TV, mobile and connected TVs. This includes teams in Montreal, Quebec City, Sherbrooke and new bureaus in the Vaudreuil-Soulanges and Laurentians/Lanaudière regions. The Executive Producer job is based in Montreal.

As the Executive Producer, you will ensure CBC Quebec sets the province's news agenda and steer our journalism and newsroom into an increasingly digital future. You will oversee daily news coverage decisions, including live coverage, and guide our enterprise and investigative journalism on digital, audio and video platforms.

You will work closely with the Managing Editor on questions of journalistic policy and judgment and as a result have a broad knowledge of legal risk management. You will ensure that all our work adheres to CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices and that it upholds our core principles of accuracy, fairness, balance, impartiality and integrity.

You bring a deep understanding of audio, digital and visual storytelling. Your curiosity and creativity encourages experimentation to engage with audiences' shifting viewing habits. You use data and research to inform your decisions.

You strive to broaden the range of perspectives, experiences and points of view reflected in programming, especially those from people who have been traditionally underrepresented in the media. You have an awareness of the diversity of lived experience and cultural communities in Quebec.

You are adept at engaging with audiences and connecting with the community, looking for new ways to reach people where they are. As a leader, you are comfortable listening to and engaging with people who have different viewpoints, and welcome opportunities to challenge the status quo and confront bias.

You're an open-minded leader who encourages healthy debate and creative thinking. You are approachable and supportive and demonstrate your commitment to an inclusive and respectful workplace culture. You are also skilled at navigating conflict and change, at breaking down silos and championing team success.

We are looking for someone who stands up for both great journalistic content and the people behind it. You will create a culture of feedback at every level. You care for the well-being of your team and co-ordinate support with the Managing Editor as required.

Your collaborative approach and clear communication style inspire teams to achieve our strategic objectives.

Your responsibilities:

  • Under the direction of the Managing Editor, oversee CBC Quebec's daily operations, focusing both on the journalism and programming, and the people who make it.
  • Lead and foster a respectful and inclusive workplace culture.
  • Provide editorial oversight to ensure our content is original, relevant and impactful, and elevates a range of voices and perspectives.
  • Lead the assignment team to make intentional and strategic story selections, ensuring decisions around focus, treatments and platforms are based on audience needs.
  • Make editorial coverage decisions that align with CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices as well as our objectives.
  • Provide guidance on legal risk management.
  • Champion content that speaks to community priorities in our priority, underserved communities in Quebec.
  • Coordinate and oversee live and breaking news coverage on all platforms.
  • Oversee newsroom staffing and scheduling decisions.
  • Identify and develop emerging talent within and outside CBC Quebec and actively support efforts to improve the recruitment of candidates from underrepresented groups.
  • Monitor audience and industry trends, and develop ideas and approaches for future opportunities.

Your profile:

  • Demonstrated experience as a Producer leading teams in a fast-paced, daily, multi-platform news environment.
  • Excellent journalistic and critical thinking skills, including a deep knowledge of the legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
  • Superior communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • A strategic thinker with a proven track record of executing on a vision.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise both quick editorial judgment and long-term planning.
  • A track record of creativity and experimentation with different audio, video and digital formats.
  • A high-energy leader with a positive, team-first attitude and the ability to motivate and coach teams, encourage creativity and embrace experimentation.
  • Experience and commitment to developing content strategies to feature new voices and perspectives and to connect with younger and more diverse audiences.
  • A strong proven connection to the communities we serve in Quebec, and a deep and nuanced understanding and appreciation of diverse perspectives and lived experiences.
  • Strong people management skills with a keen desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
  • Skilled at navigating conflict and fostering psychological well-being in the workplace.

Additional Requirements:

  • University degree or equivalent.
  • Five (5) years of related leadership experience.
  • Strong proficiency in written and oral French.
  • Ability to work flexible hours as required.
  • Highly developed organizational skills.
  • An understanding of the province of Quebec is a key asset.
  • This is an on-site position. You must be able to work at the Maison de Radio-Canada in Montreal and travel as required to our other bureaus.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.

As part of our recruitment process, candidates who advance to the next

step will be asked to complete a background check. This includes:

  • A mandatory Criminal record check.
  • Other background checks may be conducted based on the operational requirements of the position.
