The
Medical Laboratory & Stem Cell Services
team is responsible for supporting Canadian Blood Services by ensuring the safe, efficient processing and handling of stem cell and cord blood units. This team plays a vital role in improving access to stem cells for patients in need of lifesaving transplants. In this role, you will perform important functions to support laboratory operations and ensure adherence to quality and safety standards. Strong attention to detail, good judgment, and the ability to follow standard operating procedures are key to your success in this role.

  • Drawing on your knowledge or experience in a laboratory, you will perform routine maintenance and verification of laboratory equipment in accordance with approved work instructions to meet regulatory requirements.
  • Leveraging your excellent customer service skills, you will assist internal and external customers.
  • Applying your attention to detail and commitment to quality, you will perform and record all testing related quality control/assurance activities.
  • Drawing on your technical expertise and dedication to professional growth, you will maintain technical competency and promote continuous learning.

*Desired education and skills *

  • Degree or Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) and currently registered with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO).
  • Minimum 1 year experience working in a laboratory.
  • Experience with Transfusion Medicine/Red Cell Serology is an asset.
  • Technical skills including Microsoft Word and Outlook, and the ability to learn new systems and programs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work accurately with attention to detail, strong organization and time management skills along with excellent problem solving and decision-making skills.

Accountabilities
Job Description

  • Checks unverified laboratory results for accuracy prior to verification; investigates unexpected abnormal and/or spurious results according to laboratory policies, processes and/or procedures
  • Performs operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory analyzers and equipment
  • Monitors quality control results and responds appropriately to discordant results
  • Ensures specimen collection, integrity, transport and storage is appropriate for sample processing and analysis
  • Refers discordant findings to appropriate personnel for further follow-up
  • Assists at bone marrow collections; check specimen for acceptability; processes in-house and send-out test requests
  • Monitors temperature and expiry dates of blood and blood component products to ensure products are acceptable for transfusion; discards outdated or compromised products as required
  • Checks operating room list to ensure blood products are available for required surgeries
  • Issues blood and blood component products
  • Actively participates in the laboratory quality management system and process improvements
  • Performs other procedures and duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Medical Laboratory Technologist with CSMLS certification
  • Current registration with CMLTO in good standing
  • Minimum two years recent transfusion medicine experience in a hospital laboratory setting or must demonstrate successful completion of all relevant education within the past two years
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and maintain high level of productivity, competence and professionalism
  • Able to evaluate and analyze information to facilitate continuous improvement of the laboratory process in the interest of quality patient care
  • Strong multi-tasking, critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Proven ability to be a team player; strong interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of Meditech, Paradigm and Microsoft Office computer system an asset

The Kelowna General Hospital Laboratory is our largest and most specialized 24/7 lab and progressive teaching facility. The Lab consists of hundreds of team members who work collaboratively in a variety of disciplines such as Collections, Accession, Chemistry, Hematology, Transfusion Medicine, Microbiology, Histology, AP and Molecular. The Medical Laboratory Technologist 1- Hematology/Histology/Chemistry/BTS/PFT/ Microbiology assists with the diagnosis and treatment of patients by performing a variety of standard examinations and procedures in hematology; responsible for organizing time and resources for the effective conduct of laboratory examinations and procedures; participates in the Department's rotation of duties including evenings, weekends, holiday schedules, and performs other related and allied duties.


Duties will include but not limited to :

  • determining required procedure by reading requisitions and seeking clarification if necessary from physicians and paramedical staff;
  • providing information to patients, physicians and paramedical staff regarding the regimes associated with various tests and specimen collections;
  • obtaining venous and capillary blood samples required for blood tests and analyses using prescribed aseptic and venipuncture techniques;
  • preparing specimens for test procedures by centrifuging, separating, measuring and pipetting precise quantities required for analytical procedures;
  • analyzing specimens to determine the existence and/or proportion of constituent biological/chemical components and other specimen characteristics according to standard manual and automated procedures;
  • preparing and using standard and control solutions to calibrate equipment and ensuring proper operation in accordance with test and quality control procedures;
  • assisting physician at bone marrow aspirations by immediate processing of specimen;
  • using computerized data management and reporting systems in an efficient and effective manner;
  • forwarding test and analysis results to the requesting physician or to the patient's location;
  • other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Medical Technologist Certificate from an approved school of Medical Technology.
  • Must have current registration with C.S.M.L.S at the Registered Technologist level.
  • Must be licensed or eligible for licensing with the College of Allied Health Professionals of PEI
  • Must have successful completion of a recognized Medical Laboratory Technologist Program from an accredited institution
  • The ability to work independently and with others is essential
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills are essential.
  • A good previous work attendance and record.

Other Qualifications:

  • Recent training and/or experience in hematology is preferred.
  • Additional relevant education and experience will be considered an asset.
