**Position Overview:**
The CNC Machinist reports to the Production Supervisor and is responsible for the operation of one or more CNC machines. The CNC Machinist manufactures large precision-machined components working to tolerances less than 0.0005" using four and five axis mills, lathes, and/or mill-turn equipment. All work must be done purposefully with safety as the first priority.
**Location:**
Onsite in Oakville, Ontario
**Your Day to Day:**
+ Run multiple BWXT machines and demonstrates an ability to work on various BWXT parts of varying degrees of complexity.
+ Design and machine complex tooling / fixture as necessary.
+ Establish with CNC Programmers and Engineers the key dimensions that need to be trended at the machine in the dimension sheets and in the MCS to ensure process capability.
+ Adjust programs/reprogram the part in accordance with the approved PCR.
+ Set up, troubleshoot and/or operate one or more of the following machine(s), using vises, fixtures, chucks, etc., concurrently in assigned area under limited supervision: CNC lathe, CNC mill, bandsaw, manual mill, manual drill press, and other power tools.
+ Read and interpret technical drawings to set-up parts appropriately to ensure conformity and cycle time requirements.
+ May transfer CNC programs between CNC equipment.
+ Monitor to ensure Tool Life Management is implemented across the cell and in the respective machines which have automated systems.
+ Work with Manufacturing Engineering and Programming to prove out programs and lock them out, standardize and make minor changes to existing programs in accordance with established procedures.
+ Enhance and follow approved work instructions and drawings provided.
+ Strive to hit 100% first time throughput on setup's and expedited through the QC department.
+ Follow MCS and complete sign-offs as required.
+ Perform basic machine adjustments, if necessary (ex. tool offsets).
+ Set tools per Tooling Set Sheet.
+ Read and interpret technical drawings to verify machined parts.
+ Complete PCR's to indicate process deficiencies or to make continuous improvement recommendations.
+ Follow tooling life replacement program.
+ Visually or mechanically inspect parts for defects (cracks, chips, dimension, surface finish, etc.) as part of in-process inspection; record results and notify lead/supervisor of deviation as appropriate.
+ Comfortable using the following for measuring and inspection: various types of micrometers and calipers, profilometer, height gauge, indicators, edge finders, thread gauges, pin gauges, and bore gauges with master ring.
+ Understand and meet or exceed production and quality standards; seek to minimize reject rate.
+ Follow approved work instructions and drawings provided.
+ Required to perform some simple machine preventative maintenance functions, i.e. checking coolants, checking lubricants, and changing filters, etc.
+ Keep machines and work area clean; notify supervisor or maintenance when machine abnormalities occur.
+ Possess the ability to use the computer system for basic departmental transactions.
+ Safely move components with lifting devices such as overhead cranes, jib cranes, and fork-lifts.
**Required Qualifications:**
+ Able to use a variety of BWXT machines and work on multiple BWXT parts to varying degrees of complexity.
+ Educational background in manufacturing or equivalent experience working on CNC machines.
+ CNC Machinist with a Certificate of Qualification is an asset.
+ 5+ years of experience running 4 and 5 axis CNC mills, multi-axis lathes, long lathes, and/or mill/turn machines.
+ Experience working in the aerospace, defence or nuclear industry is a definite asset.
+ Able to read and interpret engineering component drawings including a strong understanding of metrology and GD&T.
+ Demonstrated ability as an adaptable team player with strong communication and problem-solving abilities.
+ Strong ability to work independently to complete assignments promptly while maintaining the high standards required in our industry.
+ Experience using lifting devices (cranes and forklifts).
The pay range for this position in Ontario is expected to be between $59,000 and $76,000 per year. The total compensation package for this position may also include a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. In addition to military and defense, we also service the agriculture, mining, construction and oil and gas industries. Pro Metal Industries is seeking a Full Time CNC Machinist to join our Machine shop team that operates under a climate control environment, air conditioned during the hot summer months and well heated during the winter months. The CNC Machinist is part of interesting and exciting projects that include CNC coding, programming and prototyping. As we expand our CNC machining capabilities and technology, we are looking for a candidate that will be responsible for programming, setting up, operating, and inspecting CNC machines to produce high-quality components according to tight specifications.

If you have a Red Seal, College Diploma or equivalent experience in a manufacturing environment with at least 5-10 years hands-on milling and turning, then this job is for you!

The ideal candidate will bring leadership, technical expertise, and a commitment to continuous improvement in a fast-paced manufacturing environment, while also assisting in mentoring junior machining personnel under the direction of the Machine Shop Supervisor.

Responsibilities:

  • Set up and operate CNC mills, lathes, or multi-axis machines to produce precision parts.
  • Read and interpret complex engineering drawings, blueprints, and GD&T specifications.
  • Program CNC machines using G-code, M-code, and/or CAM software (e.g., Mastercam, Gibbscam or similar software) for optimal machining
  • Calculate dimensions, tolerances, and material requirements for each project.
  • Select appropriate electrodes, tools, and fixtures for each task.
  • Adjust machining parameters to ensure precision and accuracy.
  • Perform in-process inspections using calipers, micrometers, gauges, and CMMs to ensure accuracy and quality.
  • Lead setup and troubleshooting of complex jobs and collaborate with engineers on process improvements.
  • Mentor and train junior machinists and assist with workload prioritization.
  • Maintain safe work practices and adhere to all safety and quality standards.
  • Perform routine machine maintenance and troubleshoot equipment issues.
  • Optimize machining parameters to increase productivity and tool life.
  • Inspect finished parts for conformance to quality standards using precision measuring tools.

Qualifications:

  • Red Seal Journeyman Machinist or equivalent with experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years CNC experience on both live tooling lathe and 5 axis Milling machines.
  • CAM experience in either Mastercam, Gibbscam or similar software is surely an asset
  • Ability to troubleshoot and be creative on new product set-ups and prototypes.
  • Ability to set up machines and record on set up sheets
  • Work with tooling vendors to select tooling and inserts to produce the best quality and cost-effective machining
  • Able to select and use the appropriate precision measuring tools to ensure components are machined to specified tolerances
  • Ability to Assist the sale team in estimating jobs for customers
  • Strong communication skills, with a positive attitude.
  • Proven team player with the ability to lead for future development
  • Ability to work alone or in a team
  • Able to work with minimum supervision.
  • Must be fluent in English, spoken and written
  • Problem solving and trouble shooting skills is certainly an asset
  • Perform work accurately, attention to detail and a high degree of quality

Positions and Shifts:

Multiple Positions on Afternoon Shift: Monday through Thursday, 4:30 pm to 2:00 am and Friday, 3:15 pm to 7:15 pm

Responsibilities:

The responsibilities for the rewarding position of CNC Lathe Hand at Ben Machine Products will include the following:

  • Set-up and operate 3 and 4-axis CNC vertical milling machines.
  • Use appropriate tools, fixtures and indicators to set up the machine.
  • Load, unload, change and modify programs as required.
  • Change and set cutting tools.
  • Modify and grind tools as required.
  • Adjust feeds and speeds for maximum efficiency.
  • Operate the machine with all safety precautions in place.
  • Deburr and prepare parts for loading and after unloading.
  • Measure and inspect parts to ensure dimensions are within tolerance.
  • Read and interpret blue prints.
  • Understand geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Experience:

We are looking for candidates with the following minimum experience:

  • 3+ years' experience required for junior positions.
  • 10+ years' experience required for senior positions.
  • Certificate of qualification, college degree or other training in CNC machining an asset.
  • Fanuc or Haas experience a must.
  • Familiarity with Mastercam preferred.
  • Previous aerospace experience preferred.
  • Previous jobbing shop experience preferred.

Work Environment

The company operates as a machine shop within the aerospace industry, supplying various OEMs across North America. The work involves 60% repeat orders and 40% custom projects, mostly structural parts up to 9 feet. The facility houses 24, mostly new, Mazak and Matsura machines, with plans for additional machines by 2026. Work shifts include straight days from 7:00am to 3:30pm and straight afternoons from 3:30pm to 12:00am.
