Position: Part-Time Community Support Worker
Reports To: Service Coordinator
Overall Responsibility: Providing flexible, customized, one on one support to two adults with developmental disabilities to participate in community activities.
The supported individuals require support attending their volunteer/paid positions, maintaining relationships, attending appointments, completing personal and homes chores and preparing meals.
Compensation: $22.00-$3.00 per hour (to start)
Benefits: Part-time benefits include a Health Spending Account, a Wellness Program, and Employee and Family Assistance Program.
Vehicle Use: This position requires staff to transport supported individuals in their own vehicles. Mileage is reimbursed at 0.61/km.
Schedule: 28 Hours per Week - Monday to Friday. Typical hours and days are (subject to change):
Mondays: 09:15 am to 06:00 pm (with a 45 unpaid lunch break)
Tuesdays: 12:00 pm to 04:00 pm
Wednesdays: 11 am to 07:00 pm OR 01:00 pm to 09:00 pm
Thursday: 12:00 pm to 04:00 pm
Fridays 08:30 am to 12:30 pm

Community Living Alternative Services (CLAS) is currently seeking staff to fill the position of Community Disability Support Worker in our Calgary Day Alternative Program.
Position Summary: The Community Disability Support Worker is a front-line, community access and disability service role that has responsibility to support and facilitate the development of skills and competencies that will assist a person with disabilities to pursue and fulfil their goals, objectives and aspirations. This includes community access as well as participation in activities arranged on-site at our Calgary support location.

Formal Education: Nice to have but not required. Combinations of education and experience will be considered.
Experience: Roughly six (6) months or more of experience providing supports to adults with cognitive challenges, developmental delays, and/or medical diagnoses would be ideal, but life skills and experiences are also recognized and considered. Experience dealing with challenging behaviors is a must.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Ability to confidently provide front line, face-to-face support to individuals with varying challenges
- Compassionate and patient approaches to the individuals accessing our services is a must
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to respond/remain calm in emotionally charged situations

Main Duties & Responsibilities
- 40% - Provide support to community members that visit the Centre, including material and relational supports, as well as referrals to external services. Liaise with other service agencies in the area.
- 30% - Build strong relationships with community members. When appropriate encourage them to explore Christianity.
- 10% - Maintain accurate records, including important information of community members for future reference. Maintain the Centre and office space in a clean and presentable condition.
- 5% - Participate in staff meetings, training and spiritual development opportunities in particular to provide support, training and coordination for new staff, summer workers and volunteers.
- 5% - Plan specific projects, programs and initiate activities under the direction of Supervisor.
- 5% - Perform other duties as required by your Supervisor.

Work is generally performed indoors, with up to 10% of the time spent outdoors in all types of weather.
- Physical Requirements
Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require standing, walking or reaching for up to 60% of the time. Employee is required to look at a computer screen and use a keyboard for up to 30% of the time. Must be able to lift up to 35lbs occasionally.

Working environment is generally favorable. Lighting and temperature are adequate. Work is performed amid normal conditions of dust, odors, fumes, and noises. Occasional environmental exposures to cold, heat, and water. This position is required to work in an environment often dealing with community members in crisis situations brought about by diverse problems. The ability to function independently and frequently under pressure, while managing multiple concurrent tasks including emergency situations is an ongoing expectation of this position.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT WORKER - Casual
About the role
As our Community Support Worker, you will work as part of a vibrant team to provide care and support to people living in staffed homes within their community. You’ll encourage and empower the people we support to be independent and self-determining and to live the life they envision while maintaining excellent standards of care, health, and safety. Your natural ability to care for others and work both independently and collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary team will allow you to influence your team’s success.
Core Responsibilities
- Ensure the supported persons’ rights and choices are respected and advocate as needed
- Interact effectively with people we support
- Empower the people we support to be full citizens of their community
- Participate in the development, implementation, and documentation of Personal Service Plans
- Foster positive relationships with persons’ family members, professionals, co-workers, and members of the community
- Assist with activities of daily living and medication administration
- Excellent understanding of behaviour management principles and strategies including mental health needs
- Record the daily activity and personal health information (PHI) of the people we support on our case management database
- To work in conjunction with the people we support to ensure their home is clean and well maintained at all times, including daily food preparation and light housekeeping duties
You will have
- Grade 12 education
- Community Support Worker Diploma or equivalent
- Minimum 2 years of experience in community social services/health care
- Current Emergency First Aid/CPR and Food Safe certificates
- Previous behaviour management course/training
