Role Overview

Key Responsibilities
Weekly Operations
- Process accounts payable and vendor payments
- Run biweekly payroll and remittances (withholding taxes, ROEs)
- Manage float and corporate credit card reconciliation
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date QuickBooks records
Compliance
- File GST/HST and payroll taxes on time
- Prepare documents for year-end tax filings and audits
- Maintain clean, accessible financial records and ensure statutory compliance
Reporting & Budgeting
- Track and report budget vs. actuals monthly
- Prepare concise monthly financials and burn rate updates
- Identify and flag financial risks, variances, and operational misalignments
Team & Admin Support
- Track finance-related onboarding/offboarding items (e.g., tools, payroll, records)
- Maintain internal control processes and access logs
- Provide support for internal processes (e.g., grant tracking, invoicing)
Required Skills & Experience
- Demonstrable experience in accounting or controller roles, preferably in startups or SMEs
- Strong working knowledge of QuickBooks Online, payroll platforms, and Canadian compliance (GST, payroll, year-end)
- Comfortable working autonomously and reporting directly to the leadership team

Project controls is responsible for project metrics such as time, cost, and resources as well as project revenue and cash flow. This position encompasses the people, processes and tools used to plan, manage, and mitigate cost and schedule issues and risks that may impact a project.
We currently have an opportunity for a highly motivated Intermediate Project Controller to join our buildings group. We are seeking an individual with demonstrated experience in project controls including knowledge of project management processes and project life cycles. The successful candidate will possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, is detail-oriented, has excellent computer software skills and enjoys working in a supportive team environment.
Your Key Responsibilities
As a Project Controller, you must be flexible, supportive, proactive, and attentive to detail as well as manage and prioritize multiple tasks in order to meet and balance deadlines and priorities. You will be able to analyze information and provide timely standard and customized cost control reports. The successful candidates' responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:
- Gain proficient knowledge of the Stantec Project Management tools and understanding and following Stantec's over-arching project management framework processes to become a resource for Project Managers and supporting ISO 9001 compliance.
- Assist the Project Management team with work breakdown structure, work plan development, and analysis of work plan against schedule.
- Contribute to proposal development ensuring contractual and operational compliance.
- Assist with contract and legal compliance review.
- Assist with subconsultant agreements compilation.
- Understand integration between cost and schedule.
- Setup and maintain cost performance against baseline schedule.
- Setup and maintain cost controls from project initiation to close out.
- Routinely provide standardized, accurate cost reports for project managers.
- Validate source data and ensure integrity of processes affecting project success such as project coding, budget allocation, A/R & A/P project related activity.
- Facilitate change order management with Project Managers and coordinate inputs via the wider project team.
- Coordinate and update project estimate-to-complete (ETC) requirements with Project Managers and project teams.
- Knowledge and use of earned value principles, including but not limited to CPI, SPI, EAC and variance.
- Project invoicing as outlined in contract requirements, ensuring accuracy and completeness. Monitor accounts receivables to ensure prompt payment per the contract terms - coordinate with the client as appropriate.
- Prepare financial summaries and participate in project governance meetings with Project Managers as required.
- Perform thorough QA/QC on all deliverables.
- Provide mentoring and training to Junior Project Controllers as needed.
Your Capabilities and Credentials

Education and Experience
- Associate's degree in business, engineering, or finance preferred with a minimum of 5 years' experience or equivalent combination of skills and experience.

Valard Construction LP is looking to fill the position of a Junior Project Controller. This position is based out of our Edmonton office, the Junior Project Controller will work closely supporting the Finance, Operations, and Executive teams on major projects across Valard. The Junior Project Controller will assist and eventually lead the operational finance function on major project(s) as designated. Valard has an extensive backlog of upcoming high profile upcoming major projects. You will be a key member of the team that successfully executes this challenging and extensive backlog. This is a high-profile position with opportunity for future growth where leadership at Valard will rely on this individual for accurate and timely project accounting and reporting for the duration of the project(s).
Requirements
- Monitor project accounting systems to ensure proper reporting, security and control.
- Prepare month end entries into accounting system including accruals, progress claims, cost moves, coding analysis.
- Oversee and identify project variances and report to management recommended actions, i.e.: margin adjustments, change order requests, claims development.
- Maintain current and forecasted cash flow data compared to how the project was bid.
- Coordinate the preparation of all customer invoices per contract requirements and develop a good working relationship with your customer counterpart so you can ensure payments are made timely.
- Maintain change order and claims log and follow up regularly on the status.
- Prepare a detailed project forecast based on the WBS using a crew based approach in alignment with an earned value/CPI based approach.
- Prepare a monthly reporting package which details key financial KPI's, risks and opportunities to the current forecast, cash flow projections, etc.
- Support Project Controller/Project Director/Project manager in project financial management and divisional reporting.
- Liaison with insurance to make sure all project insurance is in place.
- Manage with treasury if applicable that all parent guarantees, performance bonds and L/C's are in place when required and cancelled or reduced as the project progresses and/or finishes.
- Special Adhoc projects as required.

You will work directly with the clients to assist them in meeting their financial reporting requirements, which may include assisting with closing procedures, accounting systems planning, IFRS or US GAAP standards accounting policy research, MD&A preparation, and financial statement preparation. Being a part of the client side is a rewarding experience all while getting to maintain the dynamic nature of working on different client files.
You will feel a ton of ownership over the files you work on. Filing deadlines are a regular occurrence, so being proactive will be a must to be successful in our environment. Overtime is only on a rare occasion. If you are fed up with the 70-hour work weeks during busy season, this will be a great role to transition out of the long hours of public practice. What will your days look like
- Preparing financial statements and the management discussion and analysis for quarterly and year end filings for various clients;
- Completing consolidation and translation files;
- Assisting clients with financial analysis, preparing financial analysis of various balance sheet and income statement accounts;
- Monthly variance analysis of corporate costs compared with quarterly forecasts and the annual business plan;
- Assisting with the annual budget and quarterly forecast process for clients;
- Bookkeeping on special projects for clients and for some clients regular period ending closing entries;
- Assisting with year-end audit planning and liaising with the auditors on behalf clients;
