- Prepare and assist with Canadian corporate and partnership tax filings, including federal and provincial returns.
- Support preparation of GST/HST, EHT, payroll, and other compliance filings.
- Maintain tax project tracking reports and organize supporting documentation for filings and audits.
- Conduct tax research and draft or revise technical memos and reports.
- Liaise with the CRA and provincial tax authorities on compliance and administrative matters.
- Maintain and update online tax portals for federal and provincial jurisdictions.
- Collaborate with senior tax team members and other departments to support firm-wide initiatives

- 3+ years of public accounting experience, including at least 1–2 years specializing in Canadian corporate tax, or equivalent in-house tax experience.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and keen attention to detail.
- Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple deadlines.

Amazon's Canada Indirect Tax team is looking for a Tax Manager in our Indirect Tax Planning team! In this role you will help manage, coordinate, oversee and set the strategy for all Canadian indirect tax planning activities, reporting directly to the Head of Canada Indirect Tax. The role offers many opportunities for you to Think Big, be creative, and to solve complex and interesting problems.
What kind of tax technical do I need?
To be successful in the role you need to have experience in Canadian indirect tax (GST/HST/PST) advisory that includes providing technical and practical guidance on complex Canadian indirect tax topics, understanding impacts of relevant court decisions, and understanding user experience with respect to Canadian indirect tax federally and across all four sales tax provinces. You must demonstrate a proven ability to identify and manage tax risks and execute on projects. Having experience in providing technical indirect tax advice for large, national retail operations would be an asset.
What other skills do I need?
The breadth of our businesses requires the ability process, organize, and understand complex variables and use cases, the interplay of the tax rules to those variables and uses cases, and present that analysis and recommendations in a clear and logical manner. In this role, you will need to gain a deep understanding of Amazon's various business models and end-to-end systems in order to ensure effective and clear communication and requirements with business partners, stakeholders senior tax leadership. You must be comfortable operating independently and providing guidance and direction to non-tax business partners and stakeholders.
What else will I be doing?
You will also have opportunities to support the wider Canada Indirect Tax team with audit, controllership, tax planning and policy efforts. For example, understanding and communicating the impacts of new tax laws or policies to businesses and other stakeholders, understanding compliance, controllership, and audit requirements to ensure comprehensive and clear requirements are provided to business and partner teams. You will work closely with other members of the global tax department to obtain cross-functional tax subject matter input, and ensure coordination of cross-functional tax solutions and approaches.
Key job responsibilities
In this role you will help support the management and coordination of Canada indirect tax planning and related enquiries for all Amazon businesses (except AWS), including:
- Drafting and reviewing tax requirements related to business launches and ensuring those requirements are implemented correctly
- Developing test plans and sign off on test transactions related to new business and product launches
- Providing Canada indirect tax planning input to global projects
- Managing complex tax technical planning projects
- Identifying and tracking planning and policy trends, both in Canada and globally
- Researching complex Canadian indirect tax issues
- Drafting tax technical memos and opinions
- Liaising with advisors and tax authorities on matters relating to Canadian indirect tax planning and the Amazon businesses
- Developing and implementing internal processes to improve efficiency and controllership
- Analyzing legislative changes for Canada indirect tax that impact Amazon's businesses
- Reporting on planning initiatives and launches to senior leaders
- Promoting indirect tax awareness and knowledge internally including liaising with key stakeholders on changes to systems, policies and processes
- Assisting with career development of other team members

Basic Qualifications

- 5+ years in providing Canadian indirect tax advisory/planning guidance on complex issues and transactions across GST/HST/QST/PST.

The base salary for this position ranges from $89,200/year up to $149,000/year. Salary is based on a number of factors and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. JOB OVERVIEW
CI’s Tax, Retirement and Estate Planning (TREP) team at CI Global Asset Management (CI GAM) provides tax, retirement and estate planning support to financial advisors across Canada on behalf of our salesforce to assist with protecting and growing client wealth. Currently, the team is accepting applications for the position of Vice President, Tax, Retirement and Estate Planning based in our Toronto office.
This VP will be responsible for supporting advisors and the CI GAM Sales team by responding to tax, retirement and estate planning questions, presenting and creating informational/educational content and ensuring that TREP-related content materials consistently reflect changes in applicable legislation. The role will act as a vital resource to our distribution team to further enable the growth of our product line-ups through the provision of value-added services. This will include collaboration with wholesaling teams and identifying unique sales opportunities through personal, corporate and trust tax, retirement and estate planning concepts.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Work closely with the TREP team and sales team members from across the country to build new relationships and strengthen existing ones via value added services that lead to the sale of CI GAM products and services;
- Act as a subject matter expert and educate financial advisors on tax, retirement and estate planning issues and concepts, changes in legislation, and general concepts;
- Work with sales to provide education and information to advisors and investors through presentations, consultations, calls, emails and other written communication;
- Conduct ongoing sales presentations, participate in promotional road shows, conferences and investor seminars;
- Present at CI conferences and related events for financial advisors across multiple distribution channels;
- Develop creative articles to be shared with larger audiences on key initiatives and value added propositions;
- Participate in media opportunities on relevant topics;
- Conduct ongoing research on important industry trends and research;
- Build relationships with sales and conduct training as needed on important industry concepts that would assist in promoting CI GAM product;
- Work collaboratively with TREP, Sales and other CI GAM departments as needed to gain and share technical knowledge to meet company objectives;
- Maintain working knowledge of industry competitors, resources and financial markets to develop and assess suitability of various TREP-related materials and strategies; and
- Work collaboratively with TREP team members to develop new topics, promotional material, and deliverables.
WHAT YOU WILL BRING
- A minimum of 8 years of professional experience specializing in tax and estate planning with a preference to experience in a law firm or accounting firm setting;
- Expert level knowledge of private client taxation, retirement planning and/or estate planning required;
- An accounting or legal designation (e.g. CPA, CA, LL.B, JD, etc.) is required;
- A TEP designation and completion of one of the following is strongly preferred:
- CPA Canada In-depth Tax Program,
- Master of Taxation (MTax) Program, or
- Master of Laws (LL.M) in Tax;
- CFP designation is an asset;
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral;
- Bilingual in French/English is not required but is an asset;
- Knowledge of the Canadian asset management industry is an asset;
- Strong research, analytical and project management skills;
- Proficiency with various tax and estate planning resources (i.e. Income Tax Act, Canada Revenue Agency guides, case law, bulletins and information circulars, accounting and legal databases, etc.) and an ability to interpret and apply concepts in a practical manner;
- Strong presentation and training skills with large and small audiences;
- Ability to convey complex technical material to financial advisors and investors in an effective manner;
- Entrepreneurial nature – able to work with CI GAM sales teams to identify opportunities and trends;
- Strong time management and organizational skills; and
- Collaborative and team focused nature, with an ability to work virtually with TREP members and CI GAM sales team members located throughout CI’s offices in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, and Montreal, as well as operating remotely.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Flexible working conditions, with an in-office requirement of 3 days per week when not travelling;
- Travel outside of the office within the Greater Toronto Area may be required for advisor and investor presentations and events, conferences, seminars and other industry events from time to time;

Your new role
In this new role you will be involved in a variety of tax files and tax planning engagements assisting clients with various tax matters, providing research and technical support, identifying and handling issues on files, and supporting the marketing initiatives of the practice.
