The Life Enrichment Manager/Culinary Services Manager (dual role) reports to the General Manager and is responsible for leading both recreational programming and culinary services within the community. This position requires an innovative and organized professional to implement engaging programs that enhance the lives of our residents while overseeing the dietary operation to ensure high-quality meal services.

Life Enrichment Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate recreational programs and services to meet the physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and intellectual needs of the Residents,
  • Provide opportunities for Residents to be involved in the planning of the programs,
  • Assess individual Resident needs and care plan accordingly,
  • Fully utilize the Welbi platform to create weekly and monthly activity calendars specifically designed to the needs of the current resident population,
  • Ensure all resident recreation profiles are up to date and uploaded into the Welbi platform
  • Facilitate the execution of all activities on the calendar, whether personally overseeing them or with the assistance of a volunteer,
  • With the utilization of the Welbi platform, ensure that all identified KPIs and Scorecard metrics are met in the delivery of superior resident activities,
  • Coordinate community services for the Residents regarding Pastoral Care,
  • Facilitate the Residents’ Council, Recreation, and monthly town hall meetings
  • Manage the departmental budget,
  • Works in conjunction with all departments in order to meet our Resident's Requests
  • Supervise team members and volunteers,
  • Shows evidence of being focused on an individual’s feelings and knows how to turn a task into positive social interaction,
  • Focusing the team each day on merging clinical care, personal care, and quality of life
  • Participates in and implements learning, which develops one’s own emotional self-awareness and a person-centered approach toward others,
  • Any and all other tasks as assigned

Culinary Services Responsibilities:

  • Oversees food services to meet resident needs and comply with regulations.
  • Manages scheduling and supervision of culinary staff, including hiring, performance management, and discipline in collaboration with the General Manager.
  • Assesses residents' dietary needs, preferences, and restrictions.
  • Executes and maintains a five-week menu aligned with the Canada Food Guide.
  • Manages the food services budget and ensures cost compliance.
  • Orders and receives food from preferred suppliers within budget.
  • Ensures meal times are enjoyable social experiences.
  • Maintains food safety and sanitation standards.
  • Tests and ensures recipe availability for staff.
  • Collaborates with other departments to fulfill resident requests.
  • Handles human resource functions for culinary staff.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • A community college diploma/university degree in a related recreation program is preferred, or a university degree in psychology, sociology, or gerontology plus a certificate in recreation/activation. Certificates in management, gerontology, and volunteer management are an asset,
  • Culinary Management diploma, Food Service Supervision/Nutrition Management program graduate, or Food & Beverage Management certification preferred
  • Previous experience working with seniors in a leadership role, preferably in a retirement home or long-term care setting,
  • Previous employment in a health care/hospitality setting is an asset,
  • Demonstrated understanding of/empathy for the needs of seniors,
  • Demonstrated leadership and organizational skills as well as excellent communication skills, both written and verbal,
  • Highly creative,
  • Familiar with local community services/clubs,
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle,
  • Knowledge of legislation that guides the program, including the Occupational Health and Safety and Retirement Homes Act,
  • Excellent Computer skills,
  • Presents a positive approach, not controlling language and actions towards people,
  • Ability to display awareness and evidence on a daily basis of why feelings matter most to individuals,
  • Ability to have meaningful engagements with others,
  • Must have a clear vulnerable sector screen, no older than 6 months, TB test results in less than 6 months old and must be able to provide three supervisory references

We are seeking a Culinary and Food Services Program Lead to join our team, working collaboratively to enhance the nutritional programming within education and develop the Indigenous Culinary Arts Program at Seabird College.


Under the direction of the Director of Education, the Culinary and Food Services Program Lead provides the Indigenous Culinary Arts Program to students. This role involves leading the Indigenous Culinary Arts Program at Seabird College, managing the Meals on Wheels initiative through that program duration, coordinating daily food service operations at the schools, while building partnerships with local food growers and producers. The Lead will also engage in community relations activities to support students and the community.


This is a Term Contract until March 31, 2027, with the possibility of an extension.

What you'll do

Program Development and Instruction

  • Develop and deliver the curriculum for the Indigenous Culinary Arts Program at Seabird College, integrating modern culinary techniques.
  • Work with the Traditional Food Practices Specialist to integrate traditional food knowledge and cultural practices.
  • Engage students in experiential learning opportunities that support their personal and professional growth in the culinary field.
  • Work collaboratively with educational staff to ensure alignment with Seabird Colleges overall learning objectives and student outcomes.

Meals on Wheels Program

  • Oversee the planning and preparation of home-cooked meals for Elders and other community members through the Meals on Wheels program for the duration of the culinary arts program.
  • Ensure meals meet dietary requirements, food safety standards, and reflect cultural preferences of the Seabird Island community.

Operational Management

  • Manage all aspects of food service operations within the Education department, including budget development and tracking, menu planning, food procurement, and kitchen operations.
  • Develop and implement cost control systems, pricing mechanisms, and cost recovery strategies to ensure financial sustainability.
  • Analyze operational data (e.g., cost, price, volume, and sales trends) to inform purchasing, pricing, and programming decisions.

Health, Safety, and Compliance

  • Ensure all food services adhere to Food Safe regulations, health codes, and workplace safety standards.
  • Serve as a point of contact for health officials and coordinate all food safety inspections and follow-up activities.
  • Promote best practices in sanitation, allergen awareness within all education food services.

Staff Supervision and Development

  • Provide day-to-day supervision and support to assigned food services staff, offering clear direction, coaching, and feedback.
  • Participate in staffing activities including recruitment, promotion, evaluation, training, and development, fostering a supportive and high-performance team culture.

Strategic Planning and Community Engagement

  • Work in partnership with the Director of Education and College Administrator to ensure acoordinated and high-quality service delivery model.
  • Establish and nurture collaborative relationships with local food producers, knowledge keepers, and other community stakeholders to support sustainable and culturally relevant food systems.

Financial and Contract Management

  • Provide advice on food services within the Education portfolio, balancing participation costs with
    return on investment.
  • Oversee inventory management, procurement processes, and ensure that controls are in place
    for accurate pricing and costing.
  • Manage contracts for food services and goods, ensuring alignment with organizational goals,
    regulatory requirements, and cost-effectiveness.

Other Duties

  • Additional responsibilities as needed to support the community and uphold our shared values.

What you bring

Qualifications

  • Journeyman / Red Seal Chef certification.
  • Two (2) year Diploma in Hospitality, Food Services Management, Business Management, Commerce or Accounting from a recognized educational institution.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience working within food services.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and contemporary issues.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Strategic planning, budgeting, and organizational skills.
  • Strong instructional skills with a demonstrated ability to motivate, mentor, and supervise students while fostering a positive learning environment.
  • Strong oral and written communication and diplomacy skills especially in working with the public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, faculty and vendors.
  • Sound judgment and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and challenging schedules.
  • Ability to act decisively and exercise a high degree of initiative and judgment on a wide range of issues.

Preferred:

  • Indigenous candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
