As a **Microsoft Data Center Technician (DCT)** , you will develop an understanding of standard processes and procedures for preparing, installing, performing diagnostics, troubleshooting, replacing, and/or decommissioning equipment under the guidance of more experienced Data Center colleagues. **Responsibilities**
**Datacenter Operations**
+ Receives guidance and supervision to develop an understanding of standard processes and procedures for preparing, installing, performing diagnostics, troubleshooting, replacing, and/or decommissioning IT datacenter technology(ies) and equipment. Develops and acquires a fundamental understanding of the functions of, and interactions between cabling infrastructure, network, server, and storage equipment.
+ Complies with Data Center business unit policies, procedures, and deadlines with guidance from experienced technicians and/or direct-line management. Escalates issues related to compliance or operational assurance activities to direct-line management.
+ Completes assigned tickets efficiently and in alignment with relevant Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) per task type with guidance from experienced technicians. Seeks guidance from more experienced technicians on challenging or complex tickets.
+ Reviews Process Change Notifications (PCNs) and develops an understanding of the impact to work execution and awareness to changes within their area of work and/or the work of others. Asks questions when they do not have required information and may provide feedback on changes to processes to experienced technicians and/or direct-line management.
**Datacenter Work Environment**
+ Participates in daily safety briefings. Completes required Environmental & Health Safety (EHS) training, complies with safety procedures (e.g., equipment use, lifting, electrical hazards, ladder/rolling stair use), completes required Task Hazard Analysis (THAs), and uses appropriate equipment and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for assigned tasks. Adheres to and promotes a culture of safety, taking proactive action to alert others of safety concerns, near-misses, and/or incidents. Participates in the regular cadence of proactive safety observation reporting processes and systems.
+ Contributes to a positive and effective team environment by sharing information with other shifts or technician teams, contributing in regular team meetings, asking questions, and partnering with other shifts of technician teams to complete smooth transition and effective handover of ticketed work. Encourages providing and responding to feedback received on ways to work more effectively or enhance efficiency within their team and adopts best practices shared within-and-across shifts or technician teams
+ Completes required security and data management training while complying with security and data management procedures/policies with guidance from other technicians. May escort third party vendors or IT support on-premises at data centers or network sites. Appropriately takes action and reports physical security access concerns and/or incidents to direct-line management or via established reporting methods.

+ Maintains an awareness of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) through reporting dashboards, systems, for personal monthly performance discussions as needed.

Develops awareness of conditions, circumstances, and scenarios which may reflect significant customer or business impact within the Data Center environment.
+ Develops an understanding of effective execution order strategy(ies) for assigned tasks with assistance from experienced technicians or direct-line management. Prepares, stages, sets up, and performs basic startups and shutdowns for hardware (e.g., racks, hard drives, switches) according to specific written instructions provided via checklists, guides, standard processes, emails, guidance from other technicians, and/or direction from management. May perform tasks in tandem with other technicians to comply with procedures and safety requirements.
+ Learns about post-execution verification of grounding, staging, labeling, and cabling to align with all safety protocols, deployment standards, and planned Network Design Templates (NDTs). Learns about errors in deployment standards or Network Design Templates (NDTs) and escalates to relevant technicians or specialists to coordinate corrections as needed.
+ Directly performs decommissions, simple changes (e.g., memory upgrades, OS rebuilds) and refreshes of infrastructure cabling, network, storage, and server equipment, following standard procedures whilst seeking clarification and guidance from more experienced technicians as needed. Processes data-bearing devices (DBDs) for destruction or confirms any-and-all such devices (e.g. hard-drives, solid-state drives, flash cards, etc.) contained within network, storage, or server equipment has been identified for eradication or destruction with guidance.

Key Responsibilities:

Infrastructure Operations & Maintenance

  • Cable Management: Maintain strict cable management, labeling, and documentation standards for all installations to ensure ease of maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Hardware Diagnostics: Perform diagnostics, component swaps (e.g., RAM, SSDs, NICs), and system reboots as directed by internal teams or customers.

Data Center Facilites Technician :

The Data Center Facilites Technician is responsible, as part of a team, for ensuring that all electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment within the data center is operating at peak efficiency. This involves both planned preventative maintenance of equipment, daily corrective work, and emergency response to emergent issues. The Data Center Facilites Technician primarily interacts with Data Center Engineers, clients, and vendors. Data center equipment that supports mission-critical servers must maintain better than 99.999% uptime. This equipment includes, but is not limited to, emergency diesel generators, electrical switchgear, UPSs, PDUs, AHUs, chillers, cooling towers, chemical treatment systems, pumps, motors, VFDs, and building automation systems, and a basic understanding of this equipment would be preferred. 

The Data Center Facilites Technician also provides comprehensive data center white space support for IT infrastructure, which may include monitoring, troubleshooting, reporting, and day-to-day maintenance – all of this being site-dependent and as per the service level agreements with our clients. Data Center Facilites Technicians are also responsible for using event monitoring and management systems to provide notifications and escalations to stakeholders during service outages.  

Responsibilities:

  • Working knowledge of facility equipment including, but not limited to, pumps, compressors, CRACs, UPS, generators, switch gear, BMS, life-safety systems, security systems and more. 
  • Work with senior colleagues, team members, vendors, and other stakeholders to test and install data center infrastructure equipment and services. 
  • Work closely with senior staff to ensure that operational services functionality meets or exceeds customer expectations for performance, reliability, escalation, and communication, as per SLA. 
  • Work closely with vendors to resolve service-affecting incidents and/or outages. 
  • Troubleshoot infrastructure and equipment problems, placing service calls when problems remain unresolved. 
  • Provide data center white space support to managed services, including, but not limited to:  routers and switches and other customer or self-owned digital infrastructure. 
  • Perform trouble isolation and resolution as needed. 
  • Perform maintenance as needed/directed. 
  • Perform day-to-day operations, functional maintenance on infrastructure equipment to ensure the reliability and resilience of the data center environment, as per checklists and procedures.

Data Center Operator:

The Data Center Operator (DCO) is a facilities-focused role that is responsible for the operational integrity, commissioning, and regulatory compliance of the electrical power, mechanical, monitoring and control systems, and the processes that maximize customer uptime in the most cost-effective way for highly available, concurrently maintainable, fault tolerant mission-critical data center environments.  

The DCO is responsible for ensuring that all electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment within the data center are operating at peak efficiency and the utmost levels of reliability. This involves both planned preventative maintenance of equipment, daily corrective work, and response to emergency issues. The DCO is our front line when it comes to hands-on electrical and mechanical equipment troubleshooting.  The DCO serves as an expert, highly capable technical resource, reporting to the Site Manager and interacting with onsite Multi-Skilled Operators (MSO) and any third-party vendors. They are expected to be a singular focal point for all facility operations within a given data center. Data center equipment that supports mission-critical servers must maintain better than 99.999% uptime. This equipment includes, but is not limited to standby diesel generators, related fuel systems, electrical switchgear, UPSs, PDUs, AHUs, related thermal management equipment and systems, chemical treatment systems (where applicable), pumps, motors, VFDs, and building automation systems.  

Responsibilities:

  • Place SAFETY at the top of anything and everything that they do – without fail. 
  • Focus on the tasks and activities given to them and remain consistently focused on SAFETY. 
  • Operate, monitor, maintain, and respond to abnormal conditions of facility systems. 
  • Complete planned and ad-hoc preventive maintenance work assignments, requiring the skill and direction of several electrical, mechanical, maintenance trades and engineering disciplines. 
  • Conduct periodic inspections of building systems, i.e., HVAC, electrical distribution, maintain mechanical equipment rooms/enclosures to ensure clean, functional, and safe conditions. 
  • Rapid response, investigation and management of indoor emergency situations and air quality complaints, including humidity. 
  • Have a complete working knowledge on creating, closing, and tracking "work requests" (WR). Initiate or respond to work orders, follow-up and verify completion of work. 
  • Monitor performance/note deficiencies of service contractors and recommend changes, as necessary. 
  • Provide applied electrical, mechanical, integrated control and water chemistry technical expertise for the entire data center.

  • This position may require unusual hours of work approximately once every other week to meet critical maintenance windows and scheduling. 
  • Directly manage contractors and consultants for daily operations and critical maintenance (UPS systems, generators, switchgear, and chiller maintenance). 
  • Provide applied electrical, mechanical, integrated control and technical expertise for the entire data center. 
  • Directly manage and supervise Multi-Skilled Operators in all aspects of day-to-day operations and maintenance of all electrical and mechanical critical facility equipment. 
  • On-call to respond to emergency situations at the data center. 
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned by management. 
  • The Data Center Operator interacts across all internal departments, including executives and will interact with clients and vendors.

Desired Skills & Experience:

  • Strong background in operating mechanical and electrical critical systems, design review, layout, installation, including the ability to read and interpret electrical and mechanical one lines. 
  • Ability to conduct power- and thermal system capacity, safety, and code compliance assessments. 
  • Knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 72, NFPA 25 and compliance issues 
  • Hands-on experience installing, maintaining and troubleshooting large commercial and industrial electrical systems including: Medium-voltage switchgear, 480/277 Volt and 208/120-volt, electrical generation and distribution systems, Diesel powered AC generators, Static UPS systems (where applicable), Dynamic Rotary UPS Systems (where applicable), Multi-string flooded cell batteries and monitoring systems, Static switches, PLC and relay logic controls, Power monitoring systems, Data center power distribution and management systems  
  • Current knowledge of NFPA Electrical, Fire and Life Safety and building codes, or local regulatory equivalent within the location of the data center.  
  • Expert knowledge in industrial safety best practices (i.e., lockout/tag out, arc flash protection, OSHA, and state regulations) 

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry heavy equipment, up to 40lbs.
  • Ability to climb ladders and multiple flights of stairs to access elevated equipment
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time in various work environments
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and reach for equipment related tasks
  • Basic physical fitness to respond quickly to emergency situations and navigate areas quickly
  • Ability to move quickly and efficiently withing various work environments to troubleshoot issues or respond to emergencies.
  • Good hand-eye coordination and dexterity for working with small components and connectors
  • Clear vision, with or without correction, to perform tasks requiring attention to detail and precision while wearing safety glasses
  • Ability to differentiate between color-coded warning signs, labels, and cables
  • Ability to work in environments with a wide variety temperature inside a facility
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, including extreme temperatures, rain, or snow
  • Capability to work in environments with elevated noise levels while wearing hearing protection
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license for work-related travel, as required
