Direct Support Professionals provide individuals with high levels of support and supervision in all areas of daily living including; education, behaviour supports, community involvement and recreation.

The position requires that the candidate be available to work various shifts, including mornings, evenings, weekends and statutory holidays.

On-site/Off-site training is provided. Also made available to all employees are opportunities to participate in various workshops to further develop skills and knowledge on how to better support our clients.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Direct Support Professional provides on-site, client-centered programming. Staff are responsible for assisting the residents in the participation of Life Skills Training, Personal and Self-Help Training, Arts & Crafts, Recreation and Leisure, as well as Educational Programs in various subject areas, all with the goal of promoting self-efficacy, autonomy and self-esteem for the residents. Community integration is also a focus of the program.

Direct Support Professionals are responsible for creating and implementing therapeutic, purposeful programming with an emphasis on life skills and personal development, as well as client advocacy, both within and outside the agency. Direct Support Professionals need to be familiar with and adhere to the organization's core values and mission statement, and must participate in the agency's training and workshops. The Overnight (awake) Direct Support Professional provides hygiene support and daily living support for all residents. The position entails cleaning, food preparation, room safety checks, and some clerical duties (ie, filing).

Job Description

Community living is looking for energetic, motivated and career- minded night shift and part time direct support professionals. You are the ideal candidate if you possess the core and threshold competencies of advocating for others, collaboration, creative problem solving and decision making, and you can demonstrate mature and respectful communication as well as, exhibit resilience and flexibility.

You will be responsible for monitoring and supporting adults with developmental disabilities in accordance with the organizations mission statement. You will be involved with ensuring a safe, clean, and secure environment, and meal preparation.


Responsibilities

  • Provide support for individuals to set and reach personal goals.
  • Support individuals to participate in the community, including educational, recreational, and religious activities.
  • Assist individuals with personal care, as required, including medication administration, bathing, skin care, and personal hygiene.
  • Provide support to complete duties within the home, including maintaining a clean and safe environment and the preparation of nutritious meals.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of social and personal relationships.
  • Provide information to individuals to support the development of informed decision-making skills.
  • Complete computerized documentation, daily reporting, and medical follow-up, etc.
  • Promote the mission and values of the organization in the workplace and community.
  • Assist in implementing behavioural support plans and skill acquisition programs to reduce risk behavior.
  • Supporting individuals displaying risk behaviour while remaining calm and using Non-Violent Crisis Intervention strategies.

  • Advocate for and ensure participants rights, dignity, well-being, and protection from harm

  • Completion and follow up of data collection and documentation, as required.


Qualifications

  • Class G Licence (Required)
  • Developmental Service Worker Diploma or related field of study
  • Developmental services: 1 year (Preferred)
  • CPR and First Aid Certification
  • Covid 19 Vaccination (Preferred)


Requirements:

  • Developmental Service Worker Diploma or related field of study
  • Valid First Aid, CPR certificate, and CPI training
  • G Class Driver's License

  • Two Step TB Test
  • ABA training is an asset

Work Hours:

  • Exceptional working knowledge with people living with developmental disabilities, dual diagnosis, and concurrent disorders.
  • Understanding of working with people who are impacted by barriers accessing resources in the community.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to engage with community programs.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to take initiative and work independently to set goals and priorities outlined by the supported member and their circle.

  • Ability to effectively use a computer and MS Office Suite independently
  • Fluency in French is an asset.

Bona Fide Requirements:

  • Proficiency in English for reading, writing, and communication.
  • Certification in CPR & First Aid and the ability to pass mandatory Safe Management and Medication Administration training.
  • Must meet physical demands, including assisting with behavioral interventions as required based on policies, procedures and Choices Service Principles

SUMMARY

The Direct Support Professional provides supervision and support as needed to people with developmental disabilities in all aspects of daily living including personal care, domestic skills, home maintenance, money management, use of community businesses and resources, recreation, medical, medications and safety.

Due to the nature of the work, work schedules include a combination of days, afternoons, weekends and

overnight asleep/awake shifts and are based on the needs of the persons supported.

  • Must be successfully trained in and possess current certifications in First Aid, CPR, NVCI, and Medication Administration.

The employee may perform other related duties as required to meet the ongoing needs of the agency.
