What You Will DoReporting to the Manager – SH&E Policy and Strategy, the Safety Specialist focuses their work on the development and implementation of corporate and group/department level safety programs and initiatives, including communication and development of resource materials. In most cases, you will take full charge of corporate program implementation across the organization.
You will develop, implement, and continuously improve corporate and group/department level safety programs (occupational, customer and public safety) as part of TTC's SH&E Management System; support the implementation of the TTC's Enterprise Safety Solution Software System, Safety Connect, as required; provide subject matter expertise in safety programs (e.g. psychological health and safety, hazardous energy control/lockout tag out, personal protective equipment, machine guarding, workplace violence, traffic safety, etc.); support corporate and group/department level safety initiatives (e.g. track level safety, traffic safety, etc.); build support for corporate level SH&E policies, programs and initiatives by consulting with internal and external stakeholders (e.g. all levels of management, union reps, ACAT, etc.); establish and lead working groups to assist the TTC and departments in addressing SH&E issues.
You will also provide expertise and guidance in hazard identification and risk assessment activities including job safety analysis; prepare communication plans, including development of safety communications, safety notices, and safety bulletins; develop job aids, self-audit tools, and training and guidance materials; identify and provide guidance on current or emerging legislation and best practices including preparing submissions to government on proposed changes to legislation; contribute to safety reviews of designs, procedures, and standards; assist in corporate and group/department level management reviews of the SH&E Management System and participate on municipal/provincial/national public safety boards, initiatives, and projects.
In addition to the above, you will be responsible for treating passengers and/or employees with respect and dignity and ensuring the needs of passengers or employees with disabilities are accommodated and/or addressed (if applicable and within their area of responsibility) in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders so that they can fully benefit from the TTC as a service provider and an employer.

- A thorough knowledge of industry best practices in occupational health and safety as well as a history of successful experience in safety operations in a large public or private sector organization is essential.
- Demonstrated strength in project management, time management, and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks, manage competing deadlines, and drive initiatives to successful completion.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a structured and coordinated manner, while consistently delivering high-quality results within established timelines.
- Must have or be able to obtain accreditation by the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (CRSP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) within five years of employment in this position.
- Must continually maintain all accreditation and update skills by attending regular professional development seminars and courses in order to remain current and proficient with safety related best practices;
- Demonstrated knowledge of SH&E management systems such as ISO 45001 and CSA Z1000;
- Comprehensive knowledge of Ontario's legal framework for safety including the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, Regulations for Construction Projects, the Canadian Criminal Code provisions for safety, Technical Standards and Safety Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, First Aid Regulations, etc.;
- Experience in safety operations of a large public or private sector organization, preferably with a transportation focus;
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement policies and programs;
- Proven capability to lead and carry out safety initiatives and projects;
- Highly developed facilitation, analytical and communication skills to advise all management levels and assist in formulating long-term strategy and practical short-term solutions;
- Demonstrated ability to team build, mentor, coach and advise line management regarding behaviours, skills and improvements in SH&E management systems and procedures;
- Highly developed interpersonal skills in order to establish and maintain effective working relationships and promote a harmonious safety environment;
- Sound judgement, highly developed problem solving, organizational, interpersonal, verbal and written communication and presentation skills;
- Computer proficiency with a strong knowledge of software applications related to the work, such as MS Office, Word, Excel, Access, SharePoint, etc.;
- Must have or rapidly acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders including disability accommodation and accessibility requirements pertaining to passengers and employees;
- Experience working in a large public or private sector organization with a unionized environment is an asset; and

**What you can expect to do here:**
+ Support the development and maintenance of hazard management processes and Hazard Logs, including hazard identification, risk assessments, and documentation of mitigation strategies and Safety Requirements.
+ Collaborate with design, Human Factors, RAM+S, and other project teams to define and track risk control actions and safety requirements.
+ Assist in reviewing safety evidence to ensure compliance with applicable safety requirements, standards, and regulations, and in preparing corresponding System Safety Reports and Safety Case artifacts.
+ Apply relevant safety standards and regulations-such as Transport Canada requirements, CSA R114:22 (CMREA), and EN 50126/50128/50129-throughout the project lifecycle.
**What you'll bring to WSP:**
+ Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering (e.g., Functional safety, Industrial, Systems, Electrical, Mechanical) or a related technical field
+ 2-5 years of experience in system, functional, or technical safety (internships or co-op experience may be considered)
+ Competency in functional and technical safety, with familiarity in hazard identification and analysis, as well as qualitative, semi-quantitative, and quantitative risk assessment methods (e.g., HAZID, SHA, FTA, FMECA, Risk Matrices)
+ Good technical writing, communication, and analytical skills
+ Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams
+ Knowledge of Transport Canada regulations, CSA CMREA, and EN 50126/50128/50129 is considered an asset
+ Experience in rail and transit projects is preferred
+ Eligibility for P.Eng. designation is considered an asset
**Compensation**
Salary range (in British Columbia): $78,600 - $108,100

- Lead incident investigations, ensuring timely reporting and corrective actions.

Qualifications
- 3 – 5 years’ experience working in the Health & Safety field.
