Position Title: EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATOR

Reports to: Manager, Daycare

Job Overview

Reporting to the Manager, Daycare, the Early Childhood Educator is responsible for providing a safe, nurturing, and stimulating learning environment for the youngest members of the Haisla Nation community. This includes creating and implementing developmentally appropriate programs that promote the children’s cognitive, emotional and social growth, incorporating the x̄áʼislak̓ala language, stories, songs, and practices; monitoring and documenting the children’s development and adjusting programs as needed to meet individual needs; and communicating with parents about the children’s progress and any concerns. The Early Childhood Educator collaborates with parents, families, and other educators to foster the holistic development and well-being of infants, toddlers, nursery, and preschool-aged children, laying a strong foundation for their future learning and growth.

The Haisla Nation is the band government of the Haisla people. Our mission is to build a powerful, prosperous and proud community, healthy in mind, body and spirit. We are about 2023+ people, with approximately 700 living in Kitamaat Village. Duties & Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver high-quality, age-appropriate and engaging educational activities that promote the overall development and well-being of the children, incorporating cultural teachings, the x̄áʼislak̓ala language, stories, songs, and practices.
  • Develop a daily and weekly curriculum that encourages exploration, creativity, physical activity, and learning, including early literacy and numeracy for pre-school aged children.
  • Provide a safe, welcoming and respectful environment for all children, promoting a sense of belonging, self-esteem and confidence.
  • Supervise children and provide care that meets the physical, emotional, social and cognitive needs of each child.
  • Work with elders to incorporate the x̄áʼislak̓ala language and cultural practices in learning activities.
  • Maintain attendance records of all children in the daycare program.
  • Ensure compliance with childcare licensing regulations and relevant legislation.
  • Report all incidents or alleged incidents of child abuse to the Manager, Daycare.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with children, families, volunteers, and staff.
  • Participate in regular staff meetings, relevant training and professional development to enhance skills and knowledge about child education best practices.
  • Communicate regularly with parents, updating them on their child’s progress and any concerns.
  • Other Duties as required.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Post-secondary diploma in Early Childhood Education.
  • Registered ECE Certification in B.C.
  • Infant/Toddler Designation and asset.
  • Current CPR and Child First Aid certificates.
  • Food Safe Level 1 Certificate.
  • Experience working for a band government or Indigenous organization an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Confidence in working with young children.
  • Compassionate, empathetic, and patient with a strong commitment to supporting the well-being of the children.
  • Creativity, initiative, enthusiasm, and a sense of humor.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic knowledge of health and safety regulations.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to handle complex and emotionally challenging situations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain respectful, cooperative and productive working relationships with a variety of individuals.
  • Valid BC driver’s license and own vehicle is an asset.

Experience 

  • Minimum 5 years in healthcare with at least 2 years in a clinical role (long-term care preferred). 
  • 5+ years in education or training roles with experience in quality improvement. 
Skills & Competencies

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Child Care Educator to join our Child Care and After School Department. In this role, you will support childrens learning, growth, and social development in a safe, child-centered environment. The Educator will work primarily with children aged 12 months to 5 years, planning and implementing weekly program plans based on their interests, and actively engaging with them to promote physical, social, and emotional development. You will also build positive relationships with children and their families to create a welcoming and supportive atmosphere. This position requires a commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all children, with working hours from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday.


Responsibilities

  • Understands and complies with New Brunswick Child Care Facility Standards and Abuse Protocol Practices.
  • Plans and implements programming in accordance with YMCA policies and New Brunswick standards.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and adherence to YMCA Playing to Learn and the New Brunswick Early Learning and Child Care Curriculum.
  • Shows a strong commitment to childrens learning and development, informed by current research and best practices.
  • Understands the unique needs of each child and their family and plans programming to support successful outcomes.
  • Ensures all daily routines are followed, documented, and completed in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Adheres to all policies and procedures outlined in the YMCA Southwestern New Brunswick Employee and Child Care Policy Manuals, including record-keeping requirements as mandated by the Department of Social Development, maintaining confidentiality at all times.
  • Completes and submits weekly documentation to the reporting supervisor.
  • Participates in quarterly training sessions to support ongoing professional development and skill enhancement.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the reporting supervisor.


Skills and Qualifications

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience working in a Child Care, After School, or Youth program.
  • Early Childhood Education Certificate or Diploma is required.
  • Knowledge of the New Brunswick Curriculum Framework and/or Play to Learn is considered an asset.
  • Working knowledge of computers and a willingness to learn relevant software applications.
  • Flexibility with assigned working hours.
  • Strong work ethic, excellent organizational skills, and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and customer service skills.
  • First Aid/CPR certification is required.
  • Ability to travel between different program sites within Saint John as required to meet staffing needs when necessary.

Job Description


The childcare teacher provides the necessary support, resources, supervision and leadership to ensure the provision of nurturing care and education to young children in a group setting in the centre, in accordance with the goals and curriculum plans of the program, with the philosophy and policies of 1st Class and in strict compliance with Alberta Childcare Licensing Act.

The Childcare teacher reports to the Assistant Location Director and Location Director


Duties and Responsibilities


Works with and supports the Directors to ensure and facilitate the smooth functioning of all aspects of the program in order to best serve the children and families in the centre.

Ensures licensing requirements are met at all times.

Contributes ideas based on thoughtful and insightful knowledge of the children towards planning.

Develops and maintains positive relationships and regular communication with parents.

Provides supervision, support and leadership to the children.

Ensures program spaces are clean and organized at all times.

Ensures they know the number of children in the program at all times as well as their names and details of their interests and important family unit information.

Ensures all toys and materials are clean, maintained and developmentally appropriate at all times, reports any deficiencies to Assistant Location Director and Program Director.

. Ensures that appropriate supervision all the time.

Performs other related duties as requested by the management team


Qualifications

Must have a flexible schedule and be available to cover shifts within the program.

Must have a minimum of a Level 1 - Early Childhood Educator Certificate (or enrolled/register in school to complete)

Must have up to date Police Clearance with Vulnerable Sector (or be able to complete immediately upon hire).

Must have valid and current Standard First Aid and CPR Certificate (or be able to complete upon hire)



Part-time hours: 20 - 35 per week Full Time: 37.5 - 40hrs
