Position Summary

Key Responsibilities

Conduct power systems analysis using ETAP

Your Role as Intermediate Electrical Engineer

In your role as an Intermediate Electrical Engineer, reporting to the Manager of Power Systems Engineering Services, you are responsible for performing engineering design and studies for various electrical distribution and substation projects (from 600V up to 230kV voltage levels). This includes preparing electrical protection and control design deliverables, and/or physical layouts for medium and high voltage substations. You will also establish project strategy, review drawings, and ensure elements of design and detailing adhere to jurisdictional requirements and will liaise with all key stakeholders.

Your Key Accountabilities

  • Technical and Documentation
    • Independently prepares and verifies complex technical calculations.
    • Designs distribution systems utilizing client standards including bill of materials, yard layouts, plans, sections and details, grounding, ground grid, control building arrangements, interior and exterior raceways, auxiliary AC and DC power systems and cable lists.
    • Designs protection and control scheme; including CT selection, relay wiring design and protection parameter selection using IEEE standards and applicable codes.
    • Prepares scope of work, estimates, schedules, budgets, specifications and reports.
    • Prepare new and modify existing relay drawings including relay panel arrangements, single lines, three lines, AC and DC schematics, equipment wiring, and relay panel wiring.
    • Prepare new and modify existing reports/studies such as Protection and Coordination, Arc Flash, Load Flow and Grounding.
    • Leads site visits for data collection, and assessments and to provide recommendations for remedial action.
    • Leads and provides oversight for QAQC (quality assurance quality control) checks as
      required.
    • Completes and reviews project documentation and technical report development.
  • Business Development and Client Management
    • Identifies and pursues new high-value business opportunities.
    • Leads in the preparation and presentation of proposals of significant scope and complexity.
    • Manages client communications including regular updates, contract negotiation, and documentation.

Qualifications

  • Familiarity with power systems including power systems studies (load flow and protective device coordination using Easypower, SKM and ETAP), project scopes, project schedules and deliverables
  • Knowledge of engineering standards, codes and guidelines
  • Strong industrial experience, with experience in surface and underground mining
  • Knowledge of mining-related processes is a definite asset

**What will you do?**
**Product Testing for certification and compliance:** this role is expected to design and develop the test apparatus and methodology to simplify and improve the safety of product testing. The equipment working voltage will be Medium Voltage up to 38kV, and Low Voltage to 600V. The candidate shall be capable of translating product standard test requirements from CSA/UL/FM/IEC into test methodologies that are relevant, accurate and repeatable. **Cross functional collaboration and development:** Working with the product development team, the candidate will lead or direct every aspect of the test design process starting from the point of product inception and following through to the point of manufacturing and managing test documentation to ensure compliance with certification program.
**Processes and methodology development** is expected to support developing Product Test Plans and formulate, document, publish and manage Product Test Reports to ensure compliance with our CSA Supervised Manufacturers' Testing for Certification Program (SMTC).
**Commitment to Continuous improvement:** The position is expected to continuously monitor the effectiveness of the lab's testing abilities, identify risks to its operational continuity and propose and implement new equipment purchases or existing equipment upgrades. Manage the selection, determination of suitability to task, sourcing, and calibration of the site's maintained calibrated test equipment.

Responsibilities of this role are related to testing and development of MV and LV electrical distribution and control products. Key activities include planning and executing tests, developing lab capabilities, coordinating with teams, maintaining testing documentation, providing training, analyzing test data, and collaborating with engineers. The emphasis is on safety, efficiency, and aligning with business growth while participating in design reviews and maintaining a lean workplace.

- 3+ years experience in product testing with a broad portfolio of electrical and mechanical tests: dielectric (hi-pot, BIL, PD, tracking), environmental (humidity, temperature, shock & vibration), temperature rise functional testing.
- 2+ years of safe use of basic hand tools to perform electrical and mechanical assemblies.

**Essential Responsibilities:**
+ Lead integrated approaches and solutions across the diverse plant disciplines or specialties of Instrumentation, Control and Monitoring, DCS, and Electrical systems associated plant cross- disciplinary and cross- systems simulation
+ Coordinate matrixed cross- disciplinary Engineering teams to assess work product or support requests, analyze plant system requirements, operations and maintenance goals, possible I&C and DCS architectures, equipment selection, phased implementations, develop list of clarifications and exceptions, prepare proposals with scope, conformance matrix and risk scorecard, work plans, cost estimates, and schedules
+ Support business and product line leaders in ITO commercial risk review process, marketing initiatives, bid proposal, and technical recommendations
+ Lead preparation of high thru low work planning, scheduling, and resource loading across lifecycle phases of Engineer-Procure-Construct or new product introduction using the applicable practices, guides, and tools
+ Support project engineering or manager with understanding execution metric and status, issues, risks, mitigation or recovering plans, and be extremely proactive to identify changes in scope
+ Drive compliance utilizing scope, level 5 work plan, budget, overall schedule, applicable design processes, and discipline specific practices and tools including design and technical reviews
+ Lead "day-to-day" operations and follow-up to ensure deliverables are produced and commitments met on-spec., on-budget, and on-schedule
+ Collaborate proactively and inclusively for overall team across other engineering disciplines to support integrated plant design objectives
+ Collaborate with project management, project engineering, support functions, and others to drive project completion
+ Identify, confirm, document, and lead resolution of technical, risk, other emergent issues
+ Provide technical oversight and mentorship to ensure system designs and deliverables comply with requirements throughout design release to manufacturing or supplier including production, validation, installation, and commission tests
+ Support strategy, plan, statement of work preparation, and implementation of resource loading and mobilization involving employees, staff augmentation contractors, suppliers and partners including other GE entities
+ Assist with hosting learning sessions, knowledge capture, and transfer initiatives
+ Champion conformance with regulations and guides, standard review plans, branch technical positions, interim staff guidance, information notices and summaries, bulletins, orders, applicable nuclear guidance, and industry standards
+ Remain current on nuclear regulatory issues and system, component, and equipment product knowledge

**Required Qualifications:**
+ Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, or Mathematics or equivalent 4-year technical degree
+ 10 years experience in heavy industrial, thermal power, or nuclear industry working in plant instrumentation application, control and monitoring system design, digital control system (DCS), networking, and data communications architecture definition including requisition engineering, implementation, test, installation, and commissioning
+ 10 years experience in application engineering, field installation, and test engineering of systems, equipment, and components including selection, sizing calculations, and equipment qualification to diverse industry standards
+ 7 years experience in the nuclear industry product family system design, plant engineering, maintenance, modifications, new plant design certification, and licensing
+ 7 years experience in combination of; requirements management, system design, application or requisition engineering, analysis, modeling and simulation, change, configuration, collaboration, and document management, and technical reviews related to nuclear or process instrumentation, data acquisition, monitoring, control, electrical distribution systems and equipment
+ 5 years experience performing independent, or preferably team based, system design or technical reviews including interfacing with requirements management, independent verification and validation, and systems and software quality assurance organizations

Spark Power is looking for an Electrical Engineer ( 2 to 5 years of experience) to join our team. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for developing electrical engineering packages for construction projects in the utilities, large commercial and industrial sectors. This is a very hands-on role, working directly with clients, our sales team and managers to answer technical questions and create proposed solutions.

What will you do as an Electrical Engineer?

  • The primary role of an Electrical Engineer is to perform power system studies using SKM, EasyPower or ETAP. These include Short-Circuit Analysis, Protective Device Coordination, Arc Flash Studies, Load Flow and Harmonics studies.
  • Provide arc flash hazard mitigation recommendations to improve equipment and personnel safety of our client.
  • Perform Ground Grid System Design & Analysis for new construction or substation upgrade projects.
  • Assist in developing protection philosophy and protection system scheme and design set.
  • This position requires interfacing with clients, owners, consultants and construction crew and therefore strong oral and written communication skills are essential.
  • Responsible for working independently under general direction and will progress to carry out non-routine tasks of substantial variety and complexity.
  • The successful candidate will require a sound understanding of related electrical principles and practices.
  • Promote quality service to ensure employee, customer and supplier satisfaction.

Major Duties Include:

  • Perform Short Circuit, Coordination & Arc Flash studies using ETAP or EasyPower. Perform site data collection when required.
  • Perform Harmonics & Power Factor Correction Studies.
  • Perform Ground Grid Design & Analysis
  • Generate settings file for IEDs from manufacturers including SEL, GE, ABB, Basler AND Siemens
  • Create ,read and interpret electrical AC & DC schematics, AC three-line, logic diagrams and SLDs
  • Inspect, test, operate and troubleshoot AC & DC control and protection wiring schematic.
  • Develop detailed construction work packages or engineering work packages.
  • Be familiar with industry-specific codes and Standards (CEC, CSA, IEEE, and NETA).
  • Create or Modify Single Line and Three Line Drawing using AutoCAD.
  • Be safety conscious and have the willingness to learn Electrical Lockout/Tag-out procedures and gain Electrical Safety Awareness.
  • Exercise due diligence in the care and operation of corporate assets.
  • Carry out such other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Engineering Manager.
