About the Role

At MistyWest, as our Electronics Engineer, you will work on various electronic designs and cover all stages of the design process from specifications and high-level design, to testing and release, to manufacturing and support.

You will also work closely with multidisciplinary project teams consisting of project managers, technical leads, engineers of various disciplines, and product designers to complete both product development and research tasks in a variety of industries and market segments.

You will collaborate on:

  • Product definition and specifications
  • Detailed design of electronic circuitry
  • Simulations (analog and digital)
  • Schematic capture and PCB design
  • Testing and prototyping
  • Release of manufacturing files and documentation
  • Product support when necessary
  • Other tasks as required or as aligned to your professional goals.

Requirements

This is an intermediate engineer role in which the candidate will be expected to self-organize and deliver on electronics design for projects at MW It requires a mid-high degree of experience in component selection, circuit design, and high degree of proficiency in schematic capture, and PCB layout (Altium preferred).

  • Proficiency in architecting and contributing to complete electronic systems that often include low-level, highly precise sensors (IMUs, temperature, humidity), discrete power supplies, MCUs or application processors, RAM, flash, high speed interfaces (USB, MIPI, LVDS), and RF components/modules Layouts are often highly complex requiring high density high layer count boards.
  • Test planning and validation experience, as is a demonstrable iterative approach to design, testing and risk mitigation.
  • Understanding of analog and digital design techniques;
  • Knowledge of embedded systems design;
  • High resilience: the ability to push through impossible barriers to solve hard problems;
  • Highly comfortable with ambiguity and embrace failures as learning opportunities;
  • A passion for technology and unquenchable thirst for knowledge and new challenges;
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electronics or Electrical Engineering, or combination of equivalent diplomas and experience;
  • Open to attending our office in East Vancouver to execute the accountabilities of your role;

Job Summary:
We are currently hiring for a working level Hardware Engineering Developer (Test Engineering), P3  to join our Operations team in Ottawa, ON. You will work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams of professionals, ensuring alignment and driving ownership in the defining, developing, deploying and supporting of industry leading Test Strategies and Automated Test Equipment used in product design verification and manufacturing test. You will contribute to ensuring that products meet quality, reliability, and performance standards.

You will act as technical support on resolution of test process, test equipment design and product performance issues adversely impacting quality, cost or delivery targets. You will provide the necessary technical training to production personnel in the operation of test equipment and associated procedures. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the development of test systems used in product design verification, manufacturing acceptance test and environmental stress screening (ESS).
  • Support the development and execution of test plans and procedures for electronic products and systems
  • Troubleshoot and debug issues related to product & test system design, & production test failures
  • Analyze test data and provide recommendations for process improvements
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation related to system design & test processes
  • Represent Test Engineering at test & product design reviews including with external customers.
  • Collaborate with product engineering design teams in the analysis and reporting of the testability of new designs; recommend product design changes to accommodate optimal component, sub-assembly and unit level test strategies

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field
  • 6+ years of experience in test engineering or a related field
  • Detailed knowledge and experience in the development, integration and commissioning of automated test equipment (ATE) hardware.
  •  Strong understanding & experience in hardware design
  • Strong understanding & experience in test instrumentation
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent collaborative team skills with the ability to effectively communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Project Management experience including familiarity with MS Project, & project management methodologies
  • Knowledge and understanding of engineering development frameworks & processes
  • Knowledge & experience in design requirements definition and management

Desirable Skills:

  • Proven ability to lead and co-ordinate various discipline (Engineering & Non-engineering) to project success, through strong relationship buildings skills, effective meetings, and excellent verbal and written communication

  • Provide technical direction and guidance for hardware development.

  • Ensure that the products are fully and correctly defined and documented.
  • Assign technology research and investigations.

  • Facilitate professional development for team members including training and other career development opportunities.
  • Recruit Hardware Designers in conjunction with the Human Resources Department. This includes the hiring of full-time, part-time, contract and student (co-op) staff for hardware functional group.
  • Create and manage a budget for the Hardware functional group.
  • Provide consultative inputs to project schedules as needed.
  • Verify that the Project Teams follow company processes and procedures as well as standard Engineering practices and principles. Audit performance and maintenance of records.
  • Develop, coordinate and implement improvements in hardware development
    methodology, tools and best practices ensuring best fit with corporate and end-
    customer requirements
  • Derive and maintain suitable performance metrics to measure hardware development performance.
  • Experience implementing processes around DFX (DFM, DFT, DFR, DFSC)
  • Experience in reliability engineering concepts (DFMEA, PFMEA, HALT).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor of Applied Science in Engineering or equivalent related experience; Mechatronics option preferred.
  • P.Eng. required.
  • 10+ years in high volume manufacturing of which 3+ years are in a managerial role.
  • Proven management ability.
  • The ability to identify and build on distinctive strengths within a team.
  • Strong interpersonal and technical communication and writing skills.

  • Contribute to continuous integration pipelines for embedded platforms, ensuring high-quality release cycles.

WHAT YOULL NEED

  • 3+ years of embedded systems development (preferably with Linux-based platforms).
  • In depth knowledge of Wi-Fi Sensing, Wi-Fi protocol and sensing standards from 802.11.ax to 802.11.bf
  • Strong Python application development skills with attention to memory/CPU efficiency in resource-constrained environments.
  • Professional working proficiency in Mandarin
  • Proficiency in Linux shell scripting for automation and system configuration.
  • Experience with system-level testing, debugging, and performance validation.
  • Understanding of multi-layered systems (drivers, middleware, applications) and the ability to trace issues across them.
  • Solid grasp of Git workflows and automated build systems.
  • Familiarity with container frameworks (Docker, etc.) for integration and testing.

  • Knowledge of embedded dynamic linking and Linux system internals.
  • Experience with C for socket programming, networking, or building custom Linux distributions.

THE POSITION

The Embedded Systems Manager leads the design, development, and integration of innovative embedded hardware systems that power SMG's products and solutions. You will guide a team of engineers, set clear priorities, and ensure seamless collaboration across software, product, and hardware teams. This role is critical in driving continuous innovation, ensuring compliance with industry standards, and delivering high-performing embedded systems that enhance user experience and maintain SMG's competitive edge.

HOW YOU WILL BE MAKING AN IMPACT

  • Establish clear goals, priorities, and timelines for the hardware design team to align with organizational objectives.
  • Oversee the design and development of embedded hardware systems, including design architecture, PCB design, microcontrollers, sensors, communication protocols, and modules.
  • Lead design reviews, simulations, and testing to ensure reliability, performance, and compliance with standards.
  • Develop and maintain long term embedded systems strategic objectives.
  • Coordinate software engineers to ensure seamless integration of hardware and firmware/software components.
  • Drive innovation by staying informed on emerging technologies and applying them to improve performance, efficiency, and user experience.
  • Ensure all hardware designs meet regulatory requirements and certification standards.
  • Support and enforce embedded systems good practices
  • Foster cross-functional collaboration with product management, vendors, and internal teams to deliver robust embedded solutions.

WHAT SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE YOU REQUIRE

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in embedded hardware design.
  • 23 years of management or leadership experience in an embedded systems environment.
  • Proficiency with embedded design tools and familiarity with Git, Jira, and other software development tools.
  • Strong knowledge of embedded software development, including C/C++, Python, and Linux.
  • Embedded systems cost-efficient budgeting experience
  • Low-level level firmware development is an asset (drivers, APIs, RTOS)
  • Solid understanding of hardware systems including PCB design, microcontrollers, sensors, and communication protocols.
  • Experience with low-level driver development and RTOS.
  • Strong leadership, project management, and communication skills, with the ability to guide teams and manage projects from concept through to completion.
  • Willingness to travel within Canada and the USA as required.

In your role, you will review and assess supplier's airborne software and electronic hardware designs to ensure they meet Bombardier's technical requirements and regulatory requirements. In order to achieve this, you will:
+ Participate to Bombardier preliminary and critical system design reviews
+ Review and assess supplier's airborne software and electronic hardware certification plans
+ Review and assess supplier's airborne software and electronic (FPGA, ASIC, PLD) designs

Description du poste

Dans le cadre de votre poste, vous serez appelé à faire des revues et évaluations de la conception du logiciel et de l’électronique embarquée de différents fournisseurs pour vous assurer qu’ils rencontrent les spécifications techniques de ainsi que les requis des autorités de certification. Pour ce faire, vous allez:

  • Participer à des revues préliminaires et des revues de la phase critique de la conception organisés par les Bombardier et les fournisseurs
  • Revoir les plans de certification du logiciel et de l’électronique embarquée des fournisseurs
  • Revoir les détails de conception de logiciel et de l’électronique embarquée (FPGA, ASIC, PLD) des fournisseurs
  • Effectuer des audits techniques et des audits de processus chez les fournisseurs
  • Effectuer des revues de sécurité du vol
  • Évaluer les résultats des tests et l’analyse de vérification afin de déterminer l’état final de conformité aux requis de conception et de certification
  • Mener la résolution de problèmes techniques de sécurité ou conformité avec les fournisseurs et d’autres parties prenantes internes de Bombardier
  • Préparer et/ou revoir des rapports de certification
  • Contribuer à l’évolution de la feuille de route du domaine SWEL (Software and Electronics)
  • Encadrer les professionnels moins expérimentés du l’équipe dans leur développement
