Position Overview:
RWDI is seeking a dynamic individual to join its Sustainability team as a Senior Energy Consultant, preferably in our Toronto office (but we are open to consider our Guelph and Vancouver office locations). This is a full-time permanent position.
Key Responsibilities
The role includes but is not limited to the following:
- Develop building performance simulations and analyze results to guide the design of new and existing buildings.
- Advise clients, design teams, and team members of high-performance building strategies that will contribute to their successful pursuit of goals such as certification under LEED, Passive House, Zero Carbon or compliance under OBC, Toronto Green Standard, and BC Energy Step Code.
- Communicate findings through reports, emails, presentations, calls, and in-person meetings.
- Responsible for continual development of team technical skills through mentorship of junior consultants, refinement of modelling methodologies, and ongoing research of codes, programs, standards and various other emerging sustainability issues and technologies.
- Prepare compliance documentation for various building performance codes, programs, and incentives.
- Opportunity to develop and deliver presentations on technical topics internally and externally (e.g., lunch-and-learn, webinar) and lead sustainability and energy design workshops.
- Perform other technical analysis and research as necessary to support the sustainability and energy modelling team: enclosure effective thermal performance calculations, performing daylight simulation, thermal comfort analysis, renewable energy generation potential, GHG accounting, life cycle assessments, and building resilience studies.
Skills, Knowledge and Experience
Candidates will be primarily evaluated on their possession of the following qualifications, skills, knowledge, and experience. Please ensure you are clearly articulating these points in your application:
- 5 + years of building energy performance modelling and consulting experience.
- Our primary simulation tool is IES Virtual Environment. Applied experience with this software package is strongly preferred.
- Experience with an equivalent energy modelling software (EnergyPlus, Open Studio, etc.) will also be considered.
- Strong understanding of mechanical HVAC systems and controls and their impact on overall energy efficiency and carbon performance.
- Undergraduate or Graduate degree related to buildings, HVAC or energy efficiency.
- Credentials such as CEM, BEMP, or BESA will be considered. P. Eng is strongly preferred.
- In depth knowledge of building design and construction processes, codes, and standards as well subjects such as HVAC systems and design, energy analysis methods, modelling tools and capabilities, sustainable design principles, thermal science (e.g. heat transfer, fluid dynamics), and daylight/lighting/electrical design.
- Experience with Business development and supporting proposal work.
Candidates should also possess:
- Demonstrated innovative, independent problem-solving methods/capabilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work cross functionally.
- Strong people and team skills.
- Proficiency in SketchUp and MS Office with advanced Excel skills.

The Analytics & Technology Consultant will be part of the Management Consulting Team supporting asset, organizational, financial, infrastructure funding, economic, and technology consulting services to governments and public agencies, electric utilities, energy developers, and energy-intensive stakeholders in North America. To achieve this the Analytics & Technology Consultant will contribute to strategic planning, analytics development, grid modernization and optimization initiatives, technology planning and implementation, and asset management projects for governments and public agencies, electric utilities, energy developers, and energy-intensive clients among other client organizations.
Your Key Responsibilities:
- This position is an external client-facing position with our Management Consulting Team.
- Work dynamically with project delivery teams and subject matter experts to identify best-fit solutions, including in the areas of analytics development, decision support tools, grid modernization and optimization initiatives, and energy sector technology planning, modelling, and implementation.
- Serve as a member of multiple project delivery teams, including supporting analytics tool development, technical reports and client facilitations among other project delivery tasks.
- Support the project team with project management and coordination tasks, with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Assist business development efforts in responding to client requests, RFQs, and RFPs.
- Report regularly and engage proactively in adherence to Stantec's Project Delivery protocols.
- Remain up to date on industry policy, regulatory, and technological developments across target markets, major trends, and competitor activity with a view to ensuring that the firm's service offerings best align to current and future market needs.
- Serve as an ambassador for the group representing it at industry conferences, speaking engagements, and other external industry related events, where appropriate.
Your Capabilities & Credentials:
- Experience contributing to high-quality deliverables that can withstand scrutiny from technical, regulatory and executive stakeholders.
- Experience with asset management, asset analytics, and digital applications within the electrical utility market.
- Understanding of electrical utility and energy-focused firms operational needs and requirements.
- Familiar with the relationship between technical, digital and policy drivers on electrical utility and energy industry clients.
- A highly intelligent, strategically minded self-starter with superb communication and interpersonal skills who prioritizes the development of trust and authenticity for themselves and among their team.

- Knowledge of the electrical utility and energy sector.
- Relevant post-secondary degree, including but not limited to business, engineering, or computer science.
- Analysis capabilities with one or more of the following: R, Matlab, VBA, SAS, Databricks, Alteryx, or Python.
- Experience with emerging technologies and programs within the electricity sector, such as DER aggregation, demand side management, and other non-wires alternatives would be an asset.
