**What are your contributions to the team?**
+ Be part of the Propulsion Systems Engineering group, supporting any of the systems in the group's scope (Fuel, Powerplant, FTIS, FIDEEX, APU.)
+ Review equipment qualification documentation (procedures, test reports, analysis.)

+ Lead technical engineering issues investigation on the abovementioned systems

**What you can expect to do here:**
+ Provide design, calculations, and technical support for the layout of plumbing, HVAC and fire protection systems in retrofit or new projects
+ Complete engineering studies and assessments with accompanying reports
+ Convert markups into working CAD or Revit MEP drawings
+ Compile and prepare specifications relevant to each project
+ Manage communications with clients and other consultants
+ Manage deadlines, lead coordination efforts with other disciplines or consultants, and oversee quality of deliverables

+ 5+ years of experience in the design of plumbing, HVAC, and fire protection systems
+ Well versed and familiar with applicable codes and standards including, but not limited to, the Ontario Building Code, ASHRAE, NFPA, CSA

- Your role as the Mechanical Engineer within the Industrial Studio, is to work alongside a team of highly skilled Engineers, Engineers in Training, Technologists, Designers and Co-Op staff to successfully execute projects of varying sizes and complexity. The Mechanical Engineer role is also responsible for contributing to the development, mentoring, and coaching of team members using your specialized knowledge of mechanical systems, means and methods, materials, and industry standards. You will be responsible for aligning and enforcing technical quality for all your deliverables and advance the efficiency and efficacy of all mechanical team members.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Workload and resource planning with the Industrial Mechanical team, coordinating with the Team Leads and team members - including Engineers, Engineers in Training, Technologists, and Co-Ops.
- Engages with other team members and other mechanical staff within the BC to assist with technical development.
- Internal leadership in design excellence, coaching, recruitment and retention.
- Can lead and assist in the development of single discipline.
- Provide fee development and technical writing support for mechanical components of medium to large multi-disciplinary proposals.
- Providing technical input and support for large projects of high complexity.
- Evaluates, selects, specifies, and engineers all mechanical engineered systems or products for a project.
- Engages in the development of a design through sketches, electronic models, diagrams and other visual formats.
- Utilizes BIM technologies in the development of three-dimensional models of building's mechanical systems and provides markups for junior engineers.
- Prepares and revises documentation in various mechanical phases including site plans, floor plans, diagrams, and details.
- Leads project coordination meetings with internal team members and/or external consultants, owner and contractor, sub-contractors, and vendors.
- Participates in client project requirement meetings, value analysis, and basic cost estimating.
- Leads the preparation and coordination of the project specifications with construction documents.
- Participates in constructability review.
- Conducts quality assurance and quality control on own projects and projects of peers.
- Assists in the development of new standards and specifications for the mechanical group.
- Develops project scope, budgets, and design approach for all sizes of projects.
- Oversees and manages multiple projects.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Requisite knowledge and application of applicable building codes and applicable building and energy codes.
- General understanding of all phases of project document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, means and methods, materials, and industry standards.
- Ability to check the work of others for accuracy and completeness and manage time to meet project budget and schedule.
- Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.
- Thorough understanding of mechanical engineering concepts and ability to effectively communicate ideas to others.
- Must be able to qualify for Security Clearance with the Department of National Defense.
- Advanced oral and written communication skills.
- Presentation and interview skills are preferred.
- Requires understanding of Microsoft Office Suite, Revit, AutoCAD, Revizto, and heat load calculation software.
Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree, or equivalent, in Mechanical Engineering & Licensed Professional Engineer.
Minimum of 8 years of experience.
LEED Green Associate or LEED AP preferred.
Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

The role:

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our team. Reporting to the Mechanical Engineering Team Manager, you will play a pivotal role in the detailed design of our systems. You will work in multi-disciplinary teams while being trained and mentored by senior leaders. To excel in this role, you must be highly organized, detail-oriented, and a creative problem solver.

Mechanical Engineers at Saltworks make a positive contribution by:

  • Translating process designs into code-compliant, fabrication-ready mechanical systems using SolidWorks, while ensuring mechanical integrity and adherence to relevant codes.
  • Participating in collaborative design sessions with multi-disciplinary teams to meet performance, safety, and compliance requirements while identifying risks and opportunities.
  • Preparing accurate fabrication drawings using GD&T, and maintaining both internal and external engineering documentation.
  • Supporting Production by delivering clear, build-ready documentation and assisting with on-site or shop floor troubleshooting when needed.
  • Maintaining and improving the CAD database and design standards.
  • Taking full ownership of the physical integrity and performance of assigned designs.
You will be a great fit if you have:
  • A degree in Mechanical or Integrated Engineering. 
  • 1-3 years of relevant post-graduation work experience.
  • Registration as an EIT through EGBC or another Canadian engineering regulator.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks, including routing, large assemblies, weldments, sheet metal, drawings, and PDM systems.
  • Familiarity with industrial plant design, including P&IDs and concurrent engineering practices.
  • Experience using PLM (e.g., Aras Innovator) and ERP systems.
  • Knowledge of applicable piping codes and standards (e.g., ASME B31.3, BPVC, CSA B51-14). 
  • Strong hands-on mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Experience designing structural frames and/or high-pressure stainless steel piping systems (an asset).
  • Knowledge of design for assembly and LEAN methodologies (preferred).
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • A positive, proactive attitude and willingness to contribute to hands-on work when required.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally to sites within North America as needed.
