Position Overview:
As a Mechanical Engineering Specialist, you'll be a key contributor to our mechanical engineering team, working hands-on to design, develop, and refine components and systems for our autonomous robots. You'll collaborate closely with experienced engineers, designers, and technicians, learning from their expertise while applying your own problem-solving skills to bring innovative ideas to fruition. This role offers an excellent opportunity to grow your technical skills and expand your impact within a dynamic robotics company.
This opportunity is a hybrid position based out of our Kitchener HQ a minimum of 3 days per week.
Responsibilities:
- Design and Development: Contribute to the mechanical design and development of robotic subsystems and components, from concept to production. You'll work on specific parts of larger projects, gaining exposure to the full product lifecycle.
- Prototyping and Testing: Build and test prototypes, design and conduct experiments, and collect data to validate designs and identify areas for improvement.
- Product Sustaining & Continuous Improvement: Actively support and enhance existing robotic products by investigating issues, implementing design improvements, and optimizing performance, reliability, and cost-effectiveness throughout their lifecycle.
- DFM and Manufacturing Support: Work with senior engineers and vendors to ensure designs are optimized for manufacturability, assembly, and cost-effectiveness. You will also work with Production to integrate practical manufacturing considerations into your designs.
- Documentation: Create clear engineering drawings, specifications, and other technical documentation, ensuring accuracy and adherence to standards.
- Collaboration: Work effectively within cross-functional teams, actively participating in design reviews and contributing to problem-solving discussions.
- Continuous Learning: Embrace opportunities to learn new tools, processes, and engineering principles, contributing to the ongoing improvement of our design workflows.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree or College Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- 2-4 years of experience in mechanical design, preferably in the robotics or automation industries, or in a related field involving complex electromechanical systems.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD software (On-Shape preferred).
- Understanding of design for manufacturing (DFM) and assembly (DFA) principles.
- Familiarity with various manufacturing processes (e.g., machining, sheet metal fabrication, injection molding).
- Hands-on experience with prototyping and testing.
- Solid analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Good communication and collaboration skills.
- A strong desire to learn and grow within a fast-paced engineering environment.
- Successfully complete pre-employment onboarding requirements that may include criminal/civil background checks
Nice-to-Haves:
- Passion for robotics and a desire to work on cutting-edge technology.
- Understanding of GD&T and its application in mechanical design.
- Experience in designing plastic components.
- Basic understanding of electrical, software, or firmware principles as they relate to mechanical design.
- Experience with FEA, thermal analysis, or other simulations.
- Experience in using Jira & Confluence.
- Familiarity with PLM tools (like Arena PLM).

Essential Responsibilities & Duties
- Preparation of plan, profile and detail drawings for a variety of land development and municipal infrastructure projects including, but not limited to, site plans, subdivisions, road reconstructions, water/wastewater facilities.
- Field work including construction site inspection, detailed topographic site surveys, and construction layout
- Completing design calculations for storm sewers, sanitary sewers, watermains and stormwater management facilities.
- Preliminary and detailed design of grading, drainage and servicing plans for land development and municipal infrastructure projects.
- Development of construction cost estimates, form of tenders, construction specifications and contract documents.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education in a civil engineering technology program or equivalent experience.
- Aptitude to work with the following software packages: AutoCAD Civil 3D, Microsoft Office.
- Strong analytical, time management and organizational skills.
- Possess strong oral, written communication skills.
- Physical and environmental requirements for this position are available upon request.
Considered Assets:
- Knowledge of stormwater management practices and low impact development strategies.
- Knowledge of the Revit software package.
- Past construction experience will be considered an asset.
- Previous design related experience.
- Experience with consulting services working in a multi-disciplinary design environment.

Key Responsibilities:Develop and review detailed Civil3D models for land development, municipal infrastructure, and transportation projects
Create and oversee erosion and sediment control plans, grading, servicing, stormwater management, and site plan drawings
Prepare plan, profile, section, and earthworks drawings, ensuring accuracy and compliance with project requirements
Lead coordination of designs and drawings with internal team members and external consultants
Represent the company in client and stakeholder meetings, fostering strong relationships and identifying business development opportunities
Ensure projects meet approval authority guidelines, by-laws, and codes
Mentor and train junior technologists and EITs on best practices in civil design and drafting
Proactively improve design and modeling techniques to enhance team efficiency
Conduct occasional site visits to collect field data, review contractor progress, and document findings in standardized reports
Support construction reviews to ensure compliance with design specifications
Prepare engineering reports and support technical documentation
Contribute to continuous improvement of company processes and standards
Other duties as assigned by Civil Division Manager/Team Lead
Graduate of a Civil Engineering Technology Diploma or equivalent
Eligible for or holding a C.Tech., C.E.T. designation through OACETT or L.E.T. designation through PEO preferred
12+ years of experience in land development, municipal infrastructure, and/or transportation engineering
Strong knowledge of approval processes, regulatory requirements, and industry standards
Proficiency in AutoDesk Civil3D and MS Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel)
Ability to coach and mentor junior technicians/technologists
Exceptional drafting skills with a focus on detail and accuracy
Strong written and verbal communication abilities
High level of organization and time management
Commitment to professional development and a collaborative team environment
Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and take initiative
