Who You Are
You are an experienced Asset Artist ready to jump into exciting projects with a rapid turnaround. You have a strong understanding of visual design concepts, quad-based modeling with clean edge flow, UV packing and organization, texturing, and PBR shading. You have a strong creative vision and want to contribute those skills to a growing team and company. You can model, texture, look dev and render like a pro.
What Youll Do
- Model (Maya), texture (Substance/Mari), and lookdev (Houdini-Arnold) hard surface assets ranging from handheld props to architectural structures
- Model assets based on client concept and reference imagery
- UV mapping and packing, including UDIM packing workflows, to achieve high resolution and consistent texel density
- Creation of smart materials and custom paint work in Substance Painter or Mari to achieve photorealistic PBR materials
- Creation and application of procedural materials in Arnold (Houdini is a plus)
- Integration of model, Substance textures, and procedural materials in Arnold to finalize the asset for downstream scene integration (Houdini is a plus)
- Turntable and beauty preview rendering for supervisor/client review using Houdini-Arnold
What You Bring
- At least 4+ years of experience focused on modeling, UVing, texturing, and asset assembly.
- Previous experience with CG Environment and Character/Creature pipelines necessary
- A portfolio demonstrating the ability to execute a diverse range of 3D assets. This can include hard surface props, architecture, environment and vehicles.
- LookDev with environments a plus.
- Ability to replicate provided photographic or concept reference of characters and creatures with
- Ability to work collaboratively, with strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Good notion of composition rules, proportions, surface properties, and an eye for the detail

Summary of Position
As a VFX Visual Development Artist/Concept Artist for Environments, you will be responsible for creating visual development pieces that define and/or refine the visual style and storytelling of our project. You will work closely with the VFX Art Director and creative leads to produce compelling visuals that guide the production of our film.
Job Functions
- Collaborate with the VFX Art Director to conceptualize and/or iterate on key visual beats and themes throughout the film.
- Starting from storyboards, 2D concept art, or rough pre-vis models, develop and create visually stunning key art that aligns with the film’s visual style and narrative.
- Render high-quality key images to provide various VFX departments (Enviro, Lighting, FX, Comp) with realistic and applicable production ready targets.
- Use 2D software to refine production images and/or elements into practical production ready targets.
- Work closely with the production team to ensure deliverables meet fast- paced delivery schedules.
- Participate in team meetings, brainstorming sessions, and reviews to provide creative input and feedback.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and department leads to ensure alignment of visual goals and project timelines.
Qualifications
- 3+ years’ experience as a Visual Development Artist/Concept Artist, preferably in the VFX or film industry.
- Strong portfolio showcasing a range of high-quality visual development and key art pieces.
- Excellent understanding of color theory, lighting, composition, and visual storytelling.
- Strong artistic skills with a keen eye for detail and realism.
- Experience working with reference data, renders, photos, HDRIs, and photogrammetry.
- Ability to work collaboratively in an extremely fast-paced, creative environment.
- Strong time-management skills.
- Proficiency in 3D modeling, sculpting, and rendering software such as Maya, Blender, Houdini, Terragen, World Creator, Gaea, ZBrush is required; experience with Adobe Creative Suite, is preferred.
Preferred Skills:
- Strong photography portfolio.
- Experience in traditional art forms such as drawing, sculpting, or painting.
Additional information
- British Columbia Employees Pay Range: $45 - $65 (The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location of the position)
- Zoic does not cover relocation costs.
- Any and all WFH positions require the candidate to have a reliable internet connection via ethernet and work on Pacific Standard Time.
