The Environment Artist will be responsible for the design and creation of detailed large-scale full-CG and matte painted environments for live-action and animated features.
You will use a flexible generalist approach to your work, but within the context of a mature pipeline with well-defined standards.
**Experience Required**
+ Ideally 4+ years experience making environments for high-end live-action vfx feature films and/or television series.
+ Experience on animated feature films or large-scale vfx pipeline preferred

The anticipated base salary for this position is $37.50 - $53.80/hr CAD. About the Role

We are seeking a skilled Environment Artist / Reviewer on a freelance basis. In this role, you will be responsible for reviewing and approving 3D environment assets created by external vendors to ensure they meet our artistic vision, technical requirements, and project standards.

You will provide clear, constructive feedback to guide revisions, maintain asset consistency, and oversee their integration into the game engine. This position requires a keen eye for artistic detail, technical proficiency, and the ability to communicate effectively with distributed teams.

Although this role is remote, successful candidates must be located in Ontario, Quebec, or British Columbia , and must be available to work West Coast (PST) hours to align with our production teams.

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Review 3D environment assets (models, materials, lighting, and textures) delivered by external vendors for visual and technical quality.
  • Provide actionable, detailed feedback to vendors to ensure adherence to project style guides and specifications.
  • Integrate approved assets into the game engine, ensuring correct setup, scale, and optimization.
  • Collaborate closely with internal leads, technical artists, and production teams to maintain pipeline efficiency.
  • Identify and troubleshoot visual or technical issues related to environment assets.
  • Maintain documentation and communicate best practices for environment production and asset review.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 1+ year of experience in an environment art reviewer or outsourcing management role .
  • At least one shipped title (console, PC, or equivalent).
  • Strong understanding of environment art principles: composition, lighting, and storytelling through environment design.
  • Proficient with Unreal Engine or a comparable real-time engine.

As an Environment Artist (Level Artist) at Ubi MTL, you'll create captivating 3D environments within an immersive world waiting to be explored. You will be an environment architect, a visual storyteller, and an experience maker wrapped into one.

Be it in a level, side mission, or piece of an open-world map, you assemble and position key elements to deliver impactful visual moments and enhance the player experience. Every asset you carefully place, from a building to a prop, tells a story and evokes an atmosphere and a mood.

Even within a given framework, you can push creative boundaries – and you have the artistic ability to do it. You know how to modify lighting, play around with composition, and add just the right amount of detail to develop a game space with plenty of personality.

 

What you’ll do

  • Collaborate with level designers and the art director to discuss and understand game intentions and vision;
  • Perform artistic research (find written descriptions and visual references);
  • Set up placeholders and submit modelling and texturing requests to artists;
  • Find balance between artistic aspects and technical constraints;
  • Integrate and build assets into the game engine to set and dress a polished scene;
  • Ensure integrated work is aligned with artistic direction and makes sense gameplay wise (test and improve).
Qualifications

What you bring

  • A college diploma in 3D Modelling or equivalent
  • Experience in modelling, texturing, lighting, and image processing, or other relevant experience
  • Knowledge of 3D software (e.g. 3DS Max or Maya) and optimization techniques
  • Understanding of art fundamentals: lighting, composition, colour theory, etc.
  • Curiosity, flexibility, and resourcefulness
  • Creativity and a keen eye for detail

Who You Are

You are an experienced Asset Artist ready to jump into exciting projects with a rapid turnaround. You have a strong understanding of visual design concepts, quad-based modeling with clean edge flow, UV packing and organization, texturing, and PBR shading. You have a strong creative vision and want to contribute those skills to a growing team and company. You can model, texture, look dev and render like a pro.


What Youll Do

  • Model (Maya), texture (Substance/Mari), and lookdev (Houdini-Arnold) hard surface assets ranging from handheld props to architectural structures
  • Model assets based on client concept and reference imagery
  • UV mapping and packing, including UDIM packing workflows, to achieve high resolution and consistent texel density
  • Creation of smart materials and custom paint work in Substance Painter or Mari to achieve photorealistic PBR materials
  • Creation and application of procedural materials in Arnold (Houdini is a plus)
  • Integration of model, Substance textures, and procedural materials in Arnold to finalize the asset for downstream scene integration (Houdini is a plus)
  • Turntable and beauty preview rendering for supervisor/client review using Houdini-Arnold

What You Bring

  • At least 4+ years of experience focused on modeling, UVing, texturing, and asset assembly.
  • Previous experience with CG Environment and Character/Creature pipelines necessary
  • A portfolio demonstrating the ability to execute a diverse range of 3D assets. This can include hard surface props, architecture, environment and vehicles.
  • LookDev with environments a plus.
  • Ability to replicate provided photographic or concept reference of characters and creatures with
  • Ability to work collaboratively, with strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good notion of composition rules, proportions, surface properties, and an eye for the detail
  • Ability to work collaboratively, with strong verbal and written communication skills
  • A solid understanding of visual design, and how to interpret concept artwork and real-world reference imagery into a photoreal asset
  • Adaptability to rolling supervisor and client notes, both technical and creative
  • Advanced knowledge of hard surface modeling techniques and best practices, including: clean edge flow, mesh resolution control, high/low poly bake workflows, and object hierarchy organization.
  • Proficiency in creating UDIM-packed UV layouts that achieve a consistent texel density
  • Advanced knowledge of Substance Painter, including working with UDIM UV layouts. Substance Designer is a plus but not required.
  • A good understanding of physically-based shaders (including material painting in Substance Painter/Designer) and the ability to achieve the desired surface qualities across a variety of assets.
  • Working knowledge of Arnold with a core understanding of shader creation and assignmentAbility to build and improve workflows in a flexible manner that allows for fast iteration.

Requirements

Experience :

    • 3+ years of professional experience as an Environment or Prop Concept Artist in the video game industry.
    • Demonstrated contribution to at least one shipped title on PC, console, mobile, or VR/AR.

Technical Skills :

    • Proficiency with industry-standard tools such as Photoshop, Procreate, or equivalent software.
    • Strong understanding of perspective, composition, lighting, and color theory as they relate to environmental and prop design.
    • Knowledge of architectural and industrial design principles for creating believable and imaginative settings.

Creative and Collaborative Skills :

    • Ability to design a range of styles, from realistic to stylized, depending on project requirements.
    • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with experience integrating feedback into iterative designs.
    • Passion for visual storytelling and creating immersive game worlds.

Attention to Detail : Commitment to delivering consistent, high-quality designs that meet both artistic and technical requirements.

Preferred Skills

  • Familiarity with 3D modeling software for block-outs or visualization.
  • Experience with procedural design tools like Houdini.
  • Background in architectural visualization, industrial design, or environmental storytelling.
  • Knowledge of Unreal Engine or Unity for understanding the integration of assets into game environments.

VFX Visual Development Artist/Concept Artist - Environments

At this time, we’re pleased to offer this role as an option to work from home OR work from our Vancouver studio in the beautiful Gastown area, close to the Waterfront Station in Downtown. (Remote is not available outside of BC; there is no hybrid)

Summary of Position

As a VFX Visual Development Artist/Concept Artist for Environments, you will be responsible for creating visual development pieces that define and/or refine the visual style and storytelling of our project. You will work closely with the VFX Art Director and creative leads to produce compelling visuals that guide the production of our film.  

Job Functions

  • Collaborate with the VFX Art Director to conceptualize and/or iterate on key visual beats and themes throughout the film.  
  • Starting from storyboards, 2D concept art, or rough pre-vis models, develop and create visually stunning key art that aligns with the film’s visual style and narrative.  
  • Render high-quality key images to provide various VFX departments (Enviro, Lighting, FX, Comp) with realistic and applicable production ready targets.  
  • Use 2D software to refine production images and/or elements into practical production ready targets.  
  • Work closely with the production team to ensure deliverables meet fast- paced delivery schedules.  
  • Participate in team meetings, brainstorming sessions, and reviews to provide creative input and feedback.  
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors and department leads to ensure alignment of visual goals and project timelines.  

Qualifications 

  • 3+ years’ experience as a Visual Development Artist/Concept Artist, preferably in the VFX or film industry.  
  • Strong portfolio showcasing a range of high-quality visual development and key art pieces.  
  • Excellent understanding of color theory, lighting, composition, and visual storytelling.  
  • Strong artistic skills with a keen eye for detail and realism.  
  • Experience working with reference data, renders, photos, HDRIs, and photogrammetry.  
  • Ability to work collaboratively in an extremely fast-paced, creative environment.  
  • Strong time-management skills.  
  • Proficiency in 3D modeling, sculpting, and rendering software such as Maya, Blender, Houdini, Terragen, World Creator, Gaea, ZBrush is required; experience with Adobe Creative Suite, is preferred.  

Preferred Skills:   

  • Strong photography portfolio.  
  • Experience in traditional art forms such as drawing, sculpting, or painting.

Additional information

  • British Columbia Employees Pay Range: $45 - $65 (The actual base salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including without limitation, the qualifications of the individual applicant for the position, years of relevant experience, level of education attained, certifications or other professional licenses held, and if applicable, the location of the position)
  • Zoic does not cover relocation costs.
  • Any and all WFH positions require the candidate to have a reliable internet connection via ethernet and work on Pacific Standard Time.
