Job Description


Nature of the work varies depending on current need, but will include some of the elements listed below.


  • Search government sites to find information about EHS and other regulatory documents.
  • Categorize documents according to characteristics such as topic, type of content, or applicable industrial sector.
  • Write plain-language summaries of document contents or regulatory changes.
  • Keep Nimoniks document library current and accurate by updating information and adding new content.
  • Identify ways to work more accurately and efficiently, with help from technology where appropriate.

What you will do at WSP
+ You demonstrate a " **Safety-First** " focus and act as a positive role model to your colleagues when you:
+ adhere to site-specific health and safety plans to mitigate or eliminate risks to you, WSP's clients, employees, and the public;
+ identify and report potential and existing site hazards, near loss incidents and loss incidents.
+ You will work with a team of staff conducting a range of investigation and/or remediation works related to Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments and Excess Soil related projects. This may include:
+ You'll be involved with managing and executing projects primarily related to our Site Assessment and Remediation services, including Phase I ESAs, Phase II ESAs and/or site remediation to support Risk Assessments and Record of Site Conditions (Ontario Regulation 153/04), as well as for general due diligence purposes and implementation of Ontario Regulation 406/19 (On-Site and Excess Soil Management).
_You will be expected to supervise and coach junior colleagues in their daily work, and engage independently with clients and contractors; with the support and direction of the Team Lead and other senior team members._
+ **In the office** , You will develop work programs, conceptual site models and prepare proposals. You will act as a point of contact for clients, with emphasis on building long-term relationships. You will manage projects from the proposal stage through to delivery and project close-out, including schedule and budget control, client communication and invoicing support.
+ **You will have the opportunity** to take on senior lead roles to learn and grow with. WSP is committed to excellence, training, mentoring and future ready solutions. Our intermediate team members contribute to team growth, manage projects and get exposed to all aspects of the business.
+ You will also be responsible for preparation of project documentation (e.g., health and safety and other planning documentation) and coordination of subcontractors and equipment for field programs.
+ You will also carry out review of data interpretation and reporting deliverables (as prepared by more junior staff), you will carry out record reviews (historical data and regulatory information), assist with data tabulation and interpretation of laboratory reports, report preparation and other office assignments.
+ You will have an opportunity to participate with senior staff in client engagement, business development and long-term business strategies. Formal mentoring is part of our team. You will have access to senior mentors and training to ensure your growth at WSP. In turn, you are expected to mentor junior to intermediate staff, help them grow and contribute to our success.
+ **In the field** , your work will include, but may not be limited to, supervision and training of more junior staff with their soil logging and sampling, surveying, groundwater and surface water sampling, stream flow measurements, soil vapour sampling and indoor air sampling. You may, on occasion, be called upon to carry out such field tasks on an as needed basis.
+ In keeping with our culture of technical excellence, we expect that you maintain excellent project records and that you perform and record work tasks as requested efficiently and accurately while adhering to current industry standards and regulatory requirements. **Strong communication skills (written and verbal) are essential!**
+ The current job position is located in the St. Catharines office but is not required and some portion of remote/home work is also available.
What you bring to WSP
+ Have a bachelor or post-graduate degree in environmental sciences or engineering ( _post-graduate degree is preferred but not mandatory_ ) _;_
+ Are eligible to be registered as a "Qualified Person (QP)" with appropriate professional certification (P.Eng., P.Geo) _(strong candidates who are not eligible will also be considered);_
+ _Have 10 years or more of relevant working experience in the field of environmental site assessment (Phase I ESA, Phase II ESA, O.Reg. 153/04), with working knowledge of relevant regulations (O.Reg. 153/04, O.Reg. 406/19);_
+ _Have prior field experience with soil sampling, remediation projects and working with subcontractors;_
+ _Have excellent communication skills (verbal, written), strong attention to detail and a passion for health and safety;_
+ _Have a valid driver's license, and access to a vehicle for light duty projects within the area (reimbursable)_

Relevant du Directeur de l’environnement et soutenu par le Conseiller junior en environnement, ce poste agit en tant qu’expert en matière de conformité réglementaire, veillant à ce que les exigences environnementales soient intégrées, comprises et appliquées de manière cohérente à tous les niveaux opérationnels.

Les principales responsabilités incluent :

  • Diriger le processus d’obtention des permis (demandes, renouvellements, modifications)
  • Superviser les rapports environnementaux
  • Gérer la réalisation de projets tels que les évaluations de sites, la réhabilitation et l’analyse des risques
  • Assurer l’alignement réglementaire en

  • Diplôme universitaire en sciences de l’environnement, en génie environnemental ou dans une discipline connexe (maîtrise ou certification professionnelle est un atout)
  • Minimum de 5 ans d’expérience progressive en conformité environnementale, en gestion des permis et des programmes, idéalement dans le secteur du recyclage, industriel ou similaire
  • Expertise démontrée dans la navigation de réglementations environnementales complexes à travers plusieurs juridictions (municipales, provinciales/étatiques, fédérales)
  • Expérience avérée dans la gestion des permis réglementaires, des audits et des processus de reporting environnemental, avec un fort accent sur la précision et la conformité
  • Solides compétences en gestion de projet, avec la capacité de superviser plusieurs initiatives simultanément et de diriger des équipes multidisciplinaires

Developing and implementing reclamation and remediation plans on abandoned upstream oil and gas sitesOverseeing the completion of assessment, remediation, and reclamation projectsOverseeing completion of spill assessments, containment, recovery, and remediation activitiesCoordinating and supervising heavy equipment and other third-party contractors as requiredAssisting with the oversight of client budgets, tracking project statuses, and making recommendations to progress sites toward regulatory closureCoordinate with clients and staff to execute Environmental Site Assessments (Phase 1 ESAs, Stage 1 PSIs, Phase 2 ESAs, Stage 2 PSIs), vegetation assessments, groundwater monitoring programs, and reclamation assessments (DSAs, reclamation inspections, and Schedule B reclamation inspections)Collaborate with members of the Technical Resource Group to develop site specific remediation guidelinesWork closely and develop relationships with landowners, client operations, government regulatory personnel, and other stakeholdersWork closely with interdisciplinary groups (Technical Resource Group, Data Management Group, Biophysical team, and Vegetation Management team) to execute client projects successfully and programsCompile various technical documents and reports including DSA RoO’s, reclamation inspection reports, Phase 2 ESA reports, Stage 2 PSI reports, spill assessments, remediation reports, Record of Site Condition forms, Certificate of Restoration (CoR) applications, and reclamation certificate applicationsProvide mentorship and training to junior staffProvide support to senior staff as requiredRequirementsA minimum of 5 years of consulting experience related to remediation, reclamation, or environmental scienceKnowledgeable and capable of completing various field assessments in Alberta and British ColumbiaGood understanding of upstream oil and gas regulatory requirements in British Columbia and AlbertaKnowledge and experience working with various types of farming and heavy equipmentVegetation and weed identification skills in both forested and cultivated landscapesWillingness to travel and be in the field as dictated by project requirementsTechnical Diploma or University Degree in environmental science or related discipline is preferred but not requiredRegistration or eligibility to obtain designation with a recognized professional organizationExcellent communication, writing, and problem-solving skillsProficient with Microsoft Office Suite and database entryValid driver’s licenseWillingness to work within a team environmentHighly organized and can prioritize multiple tasksAbility to work outdoors in varying conditions
