Under the direction of the General Manager, the Environmental Services Manager is responsible and accountable for the provision of effective Housekeeping, Laundry and Maintenance Services for the Home, residents and staff. Ensures the Home, it's equipment and linens are in a state of good repair and cleanliness. Ensures a safe environment for residents, visitors and staff.

The following traits and qualifications are required:

A post-secondary degree or diploma is preferred;

*The Opportunity *
Reporting to the Manager of Environmental Services and Sustainability, the Environmental Services Worker maintains cleanliness in all hospital locations. A clean environment helps provide a positive experience for our patients and families and our employees, physicians, and volunteers. Activities include cleaning, mopping, and dusting all areas in the hospital. Other work includes but is not limited to, floorcare (scrubbing and waxing floors), shampooing of carpets and chairs, waste removal (hazardous waste and regular waste), chemical spill clean-up, laundry tasks, room set-ups, window cleaning (interior), some salt application during winter months, isolation room cleaning, floor and blood spill clean-ups. The Environmental Services Worker will also work towards a healthier environment by reducing our carbon footprint and going "green", as per the IWK's strategy.

Job Summary

Supervises, trains and inspects the performance of assigned housekeeping staff to ensure all procedures are completed to unit's standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain responsibility and accountability for Personnel Management Functions of the department. Personnel Management includes new associate interviews, selection, hiring, evaluation and on occasion termination in accordance with Compass Standards, Client Contract and applicable Union Collective Agreement.
  • Coordinate and support all relevant activities of the housekeeping and linen department with a special emphasis on Infection Control and Occupational Health & Safety.
  • Maintain responsibility and accountability for the Financial Management of the costs and expenses of the budget for the site.
  • Develop and follows appropriate policies, procedures, job routines to meet the needs of the site.
  • Conduct regular inventory of housekeeping supplies and order these, keeping costs in line with approved budgetary amounts.

  • Ensure assigned staff have reported to work and clocked in properly; document late or absent employees.

  • Document call offs, and replace for any shift and coordinate assigned staff breaks.
  • Prepare and distribute assignment sheets to staff and review priorities. Communicate additions or changes to the assignment sheets as they arise throughout the shift.
  • Assign designated keys, radios and beepers to assigned staff. Maintain accurate record of such assignments and ensure security of keys.
  • Check all equipment used by staff for proper supplies, neatness, cleanliness and mechanical problems. Instruct designated personnel to correct deficiencies.
  • Assist staff to ensure highest standards of cleanliness and service and conduct staff training as assigned.

Reporting to the Manager of Environmental Services, you will be responsible for the efficient supervision of day-to-day operations in the Environmental Services Department.

  • You will be responsible for the labor management of staff, providing employee technical and non-technical training, coaching and development, recruitment, orientation, performance and attendance management, discipline, quality audits, job shadowing and workload assessment
  • Work closely with the nursing units, clinical areas and other non-clinical areas/departments
  • Participate in patient safety activities, infection control, risk management and quality improvement to meet hospital and healthcare standards
Qualifications

  • Successful completion of the CHHA Environmental Management Level 1 and Level 2 preferred
  • Membership or qualification to become a member of the CAEM and CHHA required
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience working as a Supervisor in a unionized environment, preference will be given to those who have previous experience in a hospital setting
  • Working knowledge of WHMIS required
  • Housekeeping and related regulated infection control practices and processes and knowledge of PIDAC, RICN etc. preferred
  • Professional Healthcare Housekeeper's Certificate (PHH) preferred
  • Proven ability to manage supply/labor budgets to include labor relations and compliance within the local and central collective agreements of unionized staff.
  • Monitoring performance and hospital policies within a healthcare environment.
  • Excellent time management skills and proven initiative
  • Must be self-directed with excellent organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage operations and staff, establishing and maintaining quality standards, infection control practices, outbreak prevention, linen utilization and the various streams of general, recycling, biomedical, hazardous and confidential waste handling etc.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills both one-on-one and in-group situations.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required
  • Must be able to meet the physical demands of the position.
