**Job Overview:**
The Environmental Advisor will be tasked with implementing the Prime Contractor's environmental management program for marine-based scopes of work and ensuring subcontractor compliance with applicable management plans and regulatory requirements. The Environmental Advisor will be responsible for liaising with subcontractor environment and construction teams, the development and implementation of environmental mitigation measures, and coordination of environmental monitoring resources. The role is site-based on a 14/7 rotation and will periodically be required to perform night shift rotations to support site operations.
Base Salary Range: $105,000 - $121,500 (The range provided is for base salary only. In addition, McDermott offers a competitive total rewards package)
**Key Tasks and Responsibilities:**
+ Conduct environmental inspections, assessments, and audits to verify subcontractor compliance with project permits, approvals, and environmental requirements
+ Support the development, review, and approval of Environmental Work Plans (EWPs) and Environmental Protection Plans (EPPs)
+ Collaborate closely with the prime contractor construction and subcontractor construction teams to assist with work planning and ensure the inclusion of environment and regulatory requirements
+ Lead or participate in investigations of environmental incidents and regulatory non-compliances to determine root causes and corrective actions
+ Participate in and/or lead environmental site walkthroughs with management or subcontractor environment teams
+ Participate in regular client, subcontractor, and internal meetings
+ Conduct quality assurance reviews on subcontractor environmental monitoring data to identify deficiencies and ensure accuracy of reported data
+ Develop and foster positive relationships with the client, subcontractors, and external stakeholders.
+ Prepare and/or review weekly and monthly environmental monitoring reports
+ Support the implementation of the contractor's environmental management systems to meet corporate, legislative, and client requirements, including compliance with international standards (e.g., ISO 14001 environmental management system)
**Essential Qualifications and Education:**
+ A minimum of a Bachelor's degree or Technical Diploma in Environmental Science, Biology, or Earth Sciences
+ Possession of a professional designation in British Columbia (PAg, RPBio, CPESC, etc.) or eligibility to obtain one is an asset
+ 3-5 years of experience on major projects and field experience implementing environmental management programs and subcontractor management during construction
+ Experience with marine construction, pile installation, or marine mammal monitoring is an asset
+ Experience conducting environmental monitoring activities, inspections, assessments, adaptively managing changing conditions, and problem-solving skills
+ Knowledge of Provincial and Federal environmental regulations
+ Effective communication, conflict resolution, and organizational skills
+ Proficient in Microsoft programs including Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint

Environmental Specialist (Field)

The Work

Fieldwork

  • Focus : Perform field tasks primarily on oil & gas, pipeline, construction, infrastructure, and renewable energy projects as part of a multi-disciplinary, virtual team.
  • Shifts : Expect irregular field shifts, typically lasting between 2-10 days, though longer shifts may be required. Overnight stays in hotels or camps may also be necessary.
  • Geographic Scope : Majority of projects are located in Alberta
  • Data Collection and Monitoring : Conduct environmental field data collection and construction monitoring activities.
  • Adverse Conditions : Be prepared to work in remote locations and challenging conditions like muddy roads, steep terrain, and snowy environments.
  • Physical Demands : Carry field equipment such as soil sampling tools and other required gear (Up to 30lb)

    • Fish salvage/fish habitat

+ Lead the environmental compliance for a project or district.
+ Identify, assess and reduce environmental risks to the company.

+ Identify wetland and sensitive environmental areas for protection and fencing in advance of construction activities.

Job Title: Environmental Regulatory Specialist
Reporting to the Environmental Regulatory Manager or their designate, the Environmental Regulatory Specialist supports the implementation of the regulatory strategy for the Eskay Creek Mine and Revitalization Project. In implementing the strategy you’ll work across departments and collaboratively with internal and external parties to facilitate the Project advancement.

The Environmental Regulatory Specialist will coordinate the regulatory process to obtain permits and approvals, including those from the Tahltan Central Government. Working closely within the Sustainability team, this role is responsible for developing effective relationships with internal and external parties and supporting the Project in permitting processes, including relevant aspects of the Consent Agreement with the Tahltan Central Government.


Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

Permitting & Regulatory Compliance

  • Collaborate with technical resources, internal and external, to prepare and obtain required permits and approvals with feasible and achievable outcomes.
  • Schedule, track, and deliver regulatory approvals consistent with the project schedule and budget.

The Ideal Candidate
Education / Qualifications:

Compensation

The expected range for this position is CAD $90,000-$115,000 in line with the competitive job market for such roles carried out in British Columbia. Salary ranges are guidelines and any job offer received by a candidate will be determined on a number of factors such as relevant education, training, and/or experience.

We are seeking a Senior Environmental Assessment Specialist to join our team. This role is ideal for someone with a deep understanding of the Canadian (federal and provincial) Impact and Environmental Assessment processes, experience in leading multidisciplinary teams, and supporting with the development Impact Benefit Agreements (IBAs) and/or similar long term relationship agreements (LTRAs).

Requirements:

  • 8+ years of professional experience in project management leading multidisciplinary teams; federal and provincial Environmental / Impact Assessments; Crowns Duty to Consult and Accommodate, Negotiating Impact Benefit Agreements (IBAs) and/or similar long term relationship agreements (LTRAs).
  • Excellent technical writing and analytical skills, including experience with data management and analysis, preparing technical reports, and communicating complex issues in plain language (written, verbal, presentations) for a variety of audiences
  • Demonstrated experience supporting and facilitating relationship building with Indigenous groups as well as industry and government negotiations related to natural resource development and management.
  • Experience in conflict and issue resolution processes.
  • Strong understanding of Canadian federal, provincial, and territorial legislation and regulatory approvals and permitting processes, including consultation and duty to consult requirements working on hydroelectric, linear and mining projects
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage the Duty to Consult, UNDRIP, regulatory requirements, and case law to advance Indigenous interests and ability to effectively participate.
  • The ability to work both independently and direct a project team.
  • Skills and experience working in cross-cultural settings, preferably with First Nation, Mtis, and/or Inuit communities
  • Ability to make decisions from big picture to details while understanding risk

Responsibilities:

  • Directing and leading projects focused on technical peer reviews of regulatory environmental permitting and approvals reports and applications for pipelines, energy, mining, waste, community planning, and other major infrastructure development projects.
  • Reviewing and suggesting appropriate mitigation, compensation, and accommodation measures to address environmental and/or socio-economic-cultural impacts of major development projects.
  • Directing and conducting environmental assessments and/or peer reviews of large-scale environmental assessments in Canada.
  • Building and maintaining client relationships through a comprehensive understanding of client needs, priorities, and objectives while providing excellent client service.
  • Liaising effectively with Indigenous community clients, regulators and proponents.
  • ProvidingDuty to Consult and strategic negotiation advice to First Nation, Mtis and Inuit community clients as needed
  • Providing team leadership and mentorship to more junior team members
  • Engaging in business development and sales efforts

Zurich Canada is currently looking for an Environmental Underwriting Specialist to analyze and underwrite new and renewal Contractors, Consultants and Site Environmental Liability business.
Reporting to the AVP, Manager Environmental, you will be responsible for managing and growing a profitable portfolio of complex environmental risks, under limited direction, utilizing The Zurich Way of Underwriting Framework within delegated authority levels on highly complex assignments ensuring a high level service to customers.

**What you will do**
- Proactively seek renewal and new account opportunities, effectively and efficiently handling incoming submissions as well as soliciting business through pipelining.
- Measure exposure/analyze complex environmental risk across a diverse range of industry classes, including manufacturing, real estate, construction, and energy.
- Review and synthesize the findings of environmental due diligence (Phase Is, Phase II Environmental Site Assessments etc.), with the ability to profitably underwrite known and unknown pollution conditions in the determination of coverage terms.
- Pre-qualify accounts to meet with the organization's LoB-specific and overall appetite, using a solution-oriented approach to profitably meet the customer's needs.
- Assist as a subject-matter expert in product development and craft the initial drafts of manuscript forms. Contribute to development of u/w manuals, programs and guidelines.
- Regularly initiate and lead in-person visits with brokers, customers, and as well as internal stakeholders with a planned and well-prepared purpose, in order to further existing relationships and develop new ones.
- Identify and initiate opportunities for risk engineering, attending on-site surveys in collaboration with Zurich Risk Resilience engineers, and skillfully synthesizing the survey findings in Terms & Conditions.
- Negotiate Terms & Conditions with a high degree of skill, actively following through on current opportunities to close the deal and welcome further opportunities.
- Exemplify a OneZurich philosophy by collaborating with other lines of business to cross-sell and increase product density, supporting colleagues across different business units.
- Actively participate in team meetings, exhibiting behaviours that promote the well-being of self and teammates.
- Show accountability in good data hygiene, ensuring data associated with accounts are accurate and complete.
- Work effectively with all stakeholders to achieve operational metrics, including timely and accurate issuance and coding of policy transactions.
- Assist in training and developing junior staff and new joiners to the underwriting and operations team.
- Contribute to the organization's thought leadership, representing the organization in external publications and seminars. Further the wider organization's understanding of Environmental Liability LoB's appetite and strategy.
- Conduct broker and customer presentations on Environmental Liability, emerging issues, and LoB appetite.
- Ensure the successful completion of projects by maintaining continuing dialogue with business unit stakeholders during planning and implementation.
**Job Qualifications - What you bring to the table**
Required:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent and 5 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area. (ADD POP addendum)
OR
- High School Diploma or Equivalent and 10 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area
OR
- Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 3 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market Facing area (ADD POP addendum)
OR
- Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 8 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area
AND
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Experience working on time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business
- Experience working in a team environment
Preferred:
- Bachelor's Degree, majoring in Life or Environmental Sciences, or Chemical/Environmental Engineering
- 5-7 years in an Environmental Underwriting or Broking role
- 1-3 years in an Environmental Consulting or Technician role, with experience conducting or reviewing Phase I and IIs Environmental Site Assessments
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; bilingual (French and English) fluency is strongly preferred
- High degree of proficiency in Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat suite
