Job Summary:
Anew Centre for Healing's Family Reunification/Preservation program is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Family Support Worker to join our team!
Anew operates several sober living homes for Indigenous parents/caregivers involved with Children Services. The parents/caregivers would move into a 24/7 staffed home with their children and your role would be to teach the parents how to properly care and provide for their children by ways of modeling, mentoring, guiding, and supporting.
The role includes supporting parents with finding them income support, counseling services, attending medical appointments, attending AA or NA meetings, enrolling in parenting classes, etc.
You would also support parents in establishing routines for their children, helping them with daily living skills such as cooking, cleaning, etc., as well as aiding in the planning and attending of cultural and recreational activities.
This position requires you to have a valid driver's license, a reliable vehicle, and $ million liability coverage as you would be responsible for transporting families to and from appointments, court appearances, family visits to home communities, cultural events, etc.
Additional Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Develop a trusting and therapeutic relationship with each member of the family and with the community;
- Documentation on every member of the family such as daily logs, contact notes, monthly progress reports, etc;
- Crisis intervention;
- Assess, evaluate, and implement Healing Plans for the whole family;
- Assistance with medication administration;
- Program set up such as counseling, parenting groups, school for children, etc.;
- Teaching of daily living skills such as budgeting, shopping, hygiene, cleaning and caring for a home, etc.;
- Maintain structure, consistency, and effective follow-up on house rules, routines, and appropriate therapeutic interventions as required;
- Providing each member of the family with a sense of safety, acceptance, and nurturance;
- Advocacy for individual's rights and access to resources;
- Participation in team meetings to discuss families' progress.
Requirements:
- All employees should have a Degree or Diploma in a relevant Human Service field such as Social Work or Child and Youth Care from an accredited University or College with at least 2 years of experience working with and supporting families;
- Preference is given to those that are Indigenous as the families we support are also Indigenous, however not necessarily a requirement;
- Valid driver's license, reliable vehicle, clear driver's abstract, and 2 million liability coverage on your vehicle;
- Recent Criminal Record Check with the Vulnerable Sector (less than 6 months old);
- Recent Alberta Child Welfare/Intervention Record Check (less than 6 months old). Note: This is not the same as the Criminal Record Check. This document can be obtained from your local Children and Family Services office;
- Strong interpersonal skills that bridge the distance with individuals who may have a resistance to relationships, different morals/values, and alternative lifestyle choices;
- Knowledge of family dynamics, addiction, domestic violence, and mental health disorders;
- Understanding of the impacts of intergenerational trauma and the Indigenous culture/history;
- Understanding of the Client-Centred model, Medicine Wheel, and Milieu-Based Therapy philosophies of treatment/healing/interventions ;
- Must be flexible to attend mandatory training.

About the Role:
As the Family Support Worker at the YMCA, you support caregivers who have children ages 7-18. The position works with families within the Family Connect Family Supports program. FSW work with participants in the homes, to provide support for child and youth development and their well-being, increase caregiver capacity, social connections, and support. This will be done through in-person, virtual and community-based visits. You will provide in-home support to caregivers through supportive counselling, resources, referrals and increasing parent knowledge. This position requires regular use of a vehicle. You must be able to support a schedule that includes working a flexible schedule including days, evenings, and occasional weekends as we meet the families where they are at. This position also required networking and event planning within the team dynamics. The Family Connect programs are a part of the North Central Edmonton Family Resource Network and are offered out of the Castle Downs Family YMCA location. This is part-time position starting September 2025 to December 2025, with the possibility of extension based on funding.
Responsibilities:
- Recruit, and screen families for participation in Family Supports program. Provide individual supportive counselling and advocacy, facilitate appropriate community placements, provide feedback to participants, and communicate progress of the participants within the team as appropriate.
- Work with families to provide information and support that helps them improve their parenting skills and provide a safe, nurturing environment for their children.
- Plan and implement programs within YMCA guidelines and contracted performance measures.
- Research, develop and/or acquire relevant program materials, manuals and tools to meet group and individual learning needs.
- Advocate for families in crisis, assist with problem solving and goal planning to increase their confidence in meeting the needs of their children and family.
- Maintain appropriate program administration systems in relation to programs.
- Establish effective community relations relevant to the program.
- Market and promote programs to achieve programmatic and financial targets.
Qualifications:
- University Degree in a Human Services field or equivalent
- 2 years of experience working directly with vulnerable families
- Previous experience working with cultural groups, high needs, and marginalized populations.
- Standard First Aid and CPR
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention and Suicide Intervention Certification preferred.

PLEA Community Services is currently seeking a Regular Full-Time Family Support Worker for our Asante team located in Maple Ridge, BC. The proposed start date for this position is August 15, 2025. This position requires BCGEU membership.
The Family Support Worker gathers information relevant to the participant’s neurodevelopmental concerns, needs and risks by interviewing, observing behaviour, meeting with caregivers and service providers and using a variety of inventories, checklists and questionnaires. - Thorough knowledge of relevant legislation, and agency policies and procedures.
- Proficient in computer software applications including MS Office, and database programs.
Qualifications:
- Minimum post-secondary diploma in Social Services, Social Work, or Child/Youth Worker. A combination of education and experience may be considered.
- An awareness of Indigenous issues, including knowledge of the communities, family structure, customs and traditions, is an asset.
- Two years’ experience working with children and / or families.
Required:
- Must possess a valid Class G Ontario Driver’s License and have access to a vehicle with an OPCF6A Insurance endorsement and minimum of $1,000,000 Liability.
- Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check, Internal Records Check, and Driver’s Abstract.
- The ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends. Occasional travel within the region is also required.
