To meet our growth challenges, WSP is currently seeking a **Lead/Senior Substation Protection & Control Engineer** to join our National Electrical Team, located in one of our Ontario offices located in **Thornhill, Etobicoke, Mississauga, Toronto, Ottawa or Kitchener.**
As the Lead/Senior Substation Protection & Control Engineer, the successful candidate will be involved in projects with our Energy Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client's objectives and solves their challenges. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical expertise and consulting experience in T&D projects - specific to substations. The substations projects include, but not limited, greenfield and brownfield projects, high-voltage utility systems and renewable energy interconnection projects. This role involves close collaboration with clients and stakeholders to understand their engineering needs, ensuring successful project coordination. The ideal candidate will bring technical expertise and consulting experience, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget while maintaining high standards of quality and safety. This position is part of the Transmission and Distribution market sector of the Power Division, which specializes in the transmission of electricity. **What you can expect to do here:**
+ You will conduct detailed review of all existing protection schemes present in the subject area to incorporate into new design. Special areas of focus are anti-islanding schemes, generator intertie settings, SPS schemes, etc. (anything outside of normal) to ensure that required protections already in place are not removed before modifying existing schemes.;
+ You will lead/supervise overall protection design for all capital projects and define relay protection functionality/scheme in accordance with Client standards;
+ You will review contractor provided relay settings, logic diagrams (including Goose messaging diagrams), and operational descriptions for all capital projects;
+ You will review/perform area relay coordination and determine what level of area coordination is required/needed (based on changes in fault duty and overall system performance due to the project changes);
+ You will review contractor provided relay settings for all temporary builds and construction sequence steps including mobile settings;
+ You will review/provide input to Owner's Aspen model changes as required for individual capital projects;
+ You will provide design support during implementation/testing and commissioning of the above the items;
+ You will provide feedback to Owner on existing standards and help refine the Owner's design practices;
+ You will ensure all as-built documentation gets filed appropriately in the plant filing location at Owner;
+ You will lead/supervise overall automation and integration design for all capital projects;
+ You will review/design SCADA point indexes;

+ You will provide design support during implementation/testing and commissioning of the above items;
+ You will perform constructability review and ensure adequate automation and integration coverage is available for each outage step (SCADA etc.);
+ You will maintain good working relationships with internal groups that support projects;
+ You will maintain good working relationships with material suppliers, contractors, and any others that affect the quality, schedule and cost of projects;
+ You will exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures;

**What you'll bring to WSP:**
+ A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized institution;
+ Professional engineering license (P.Eng) required;
+ Minimum of 10+ years of relevant post education experience in electrical engineering, power systems protection and control, preferably in consulting environment;
+ Experience with all voltages 735 kV and below;
+ Proficient with various engineering design tools and software (e.g. ETAP, Aspen OneLiner, EasyPower, PLS-CADD, SPIDAcalc, etc.);
+ Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment;
+ Ability to perform independently and in a team environment and maintain project ownership;
+ Efficient communications and ability to work with team members not located in the same office through MS Teams, email, and/or telephone calls;

SCOPE OF POSITION

The Field Engineer/Geologist is responsible for the safe, efficient and accurate operation of geotechnical and geophysical site investigation equipment. Given significant responsibility, the Field Engineer/Geologist is tasked with the smooth and accurate execution of various projects, from the deployment of equipment to data acquisition and submission. They will work closely with equipment operators, gaining hands-on experience with unique heavy machinery and a sophisticated suite of geotechnical instruments in a variety of environments.

The Field Engineer/Geologist will assume numerous other roles ranging from Equipment Operator to Project Coordinator as the ever-changing demands of the workplace dictate. A successful candidate must have well-developed interpersonal, organizational and communication skills as well as strong problem-solving abilities. The applicant must be willing to travel for up to 2-3 weeks at a time, several times each year; typical travel for this position includes 100-200 nights in a hotel each year for work travel.


This is a fully field-based role with no office time, perfect for those who thrive in hands-on environments! While the position is based out of Surrey, BC, you'll have the opportunity to work on exciting projects across Western and Northern Canada, all the way to Manitoba.

OVERALL GOALS FOR POSITION

ROLES, RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS


Equipment Operation

  • Familiarize with and operate CPTu equipment, VST, sampling systems, numerous geophysicalinstruments and other in-situ testing equipment in a safe and productive manner.
  • Become trained, company-certified and competent to operate numerous types of drillingequipment and other pieces of equipment within our extensive fleet.
  • Organize logistics for the mobilization and demobilization of equipment in hard-to-accessenvironments.
  • Perform routine maintenance on various pieces of equipment to ensure optimal performance.


Data Collection & Reporting

  • Perform testing to collect data in a timely, orderly and accurate manner.
  • Compile the collected data, sample logs, etc. daily and submit to the Engineer/Supervisor and/orclient for further processing.
  • Collect field notes and photos to guarantee the translation of data from the field to the office is as highlyaccurate as possible.
  • Prepare and compile the final field report.


Health & Safety

  • Identify with and respect ConeTecs safety culture, first and foremost.
  • Ensure proper preparation and knowledge of all necessary safe operating procedures beforebeginning any job.
  • Report any safety-related incidents, infractions, or near misses to the Project Manager and theHSE Officer, immediately.
  • Know and follow the incident reporting protocol at all times.


Other General Responsibilities

  • This position requires frequent travel to a variety of work sites throughout Western Canada
  • Communicate with the Supervisor or Project Manager as to any equipment problems or needs, aswell as any field observations that might be of use.
  • Perform other shop functions as required.


SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED


Education Requirements

  • Completed a Bachelors Degree in Engineering, Geology or other geo-related science
  • Drivers license and clean driving record.


Experience Requirements

  • Previous field experience is an asset.


Technical Skill Requirements

  • Experience with Microsoft Excel is an asset
  • Electrical and mechanical skills are an asset but not required
  • Must be able to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, moving heavy materials up to 50 lbs., climbing, crawling as well as walking on uneven ground, working long hours in all weather conditions.
