Job DescriptionThe Field Service Engineer is responsible for delivering exceptional technical support, maintenance, installation, and customer training services for TOMRA's cutting-edge food sorting equipment. This role aims to ensure the seamless operation of TOMRA's solutions, maximize equipment performance and enhance customer satisfaction.
Primary Job Functions
- Perform field service work at customer sites which includes installation, commissioning, testing, integration, optimization, maintenance and repair, ensuring full functionality according to machine specifications
- Perform all mechanical, electrical, electronic and optical tuning and setup
- Analyze, evaluate and diagnose equipment; troubleshooting machine problems through to resolution
- Perform preventative maintenance including preseason service, postseason service and enhancing ongoing performance of machines
- React in a prompt and professional manner to customer machine issues in the field. Where an easy fix is not possible, ensure customer is well informed of the next steps and potential costs
- Address customer complaints and if necessary, escalate to appropriate stakeholders
- Maintain close relationships and work collaboratively with engineering, research & development, sales, customer solution delivery and other internal stakeholders for continuous improvement activities, to advise on any potential sales opportunities and to successfully complete projects. Contribution and collaboration is vital whether its research and development site testing, refurbishment, refitting, upgrades or new installs, all projects require teamwork
- Act as the voice of the customer in the value chain to improve products systems and services, by reporting on feedback and comments received in the field leadership, research and development, or sales
- Assist with training and development of new Field Service Engineers, as requested.
- Instruct and train customers on operation of machine, utilization and required maintenance of the systems
- Manage and control tools, test equipment, technical documentation and other assigned equipment.
- Embrace related assignments and responsibilities as required to contribute to the overall success of the team

Required Skills/Abilities
- Relevant knowledge of electronics/electrical assembly and wiring
- Strong understanding / knowledge of electronics and electrical assembly and wiring
- Proven to read, analyze and interpret technical procedures and/or governmental regulations
- Assist and support customers in a professional manner
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers, internal and external associates and management
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to deal effectively with customers in the English language as necessary
- Competent with Microsoft Office – Word, Excel and Outlook
- A positive attitude with a strong customer service mindset
- Proficiency in French is prefered
Education
- An Associate's degree in electrical, electronic, automation, mechanical, mechatronics, sustainable manufacturing, or industrial engineering is preferred or combination education and equivalent experience is accepted
Work Environment
- Ability to work in Food processing plants, farms, cold storage facilities, and outside in high/low temperatures
- Ability to work in an open office environment as well as industrial customer worksites
Experience
- Two plus years’ experience in field service and customer support
- Two plus years’ experience in PC building, repairing and diagnostic testing
- Two plus years’ experience in installing software on PC’s
- Experience with packaging and or printing machinery a plus
- Experience engaging with customers in a service delivery environment
- Experience in electronic system troubleshooting a plus
- Working knowledge of basic analog and digital circuits, electrical power circuits, PLC circuits
- Working knowledge of basic test equipment such as oscilloscopes and voltmeters
- Knowledge of computer hardware and configurations
- Basic knowledge of MS Office products; Word, Excel and PPT
- Ability to read schematics
Physical Requirements
- Be able to lift up to 80 lbs. of equipment on a regular basis
- Must be able to frequently bend, kneel, or stand
- Must be able to work in confined spaces
- Ability to distinguish between the full range of colors in the color spectrum
- No major food allergies that would impede ability to work around or near food, nuts, fruits, vegetables, protein and seafood
Travel
- Willing to travel for at least 70% of the time, domestic and international travel based on a flexible schedule; includes weekends and/or holiday travels

Pay Band
For Canada applicants, the anticipated hourly base pay range for this position is $31.25 to $37.50 per hour . The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience and location.

In this role, you will be responsible for providing expert technical support to customers and technicians, troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, and building automation system issues in-house. Key Accountabilities:
Technical Support & Troubleshooting
- Answer queue calls from technicians and customers on site to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and Building Automation System (BAS) issues remotely.
- Assist customers with problematic equipment and recommend appropriate solutions.
- Determine whether reported issues are product-related or site-related, and take appropriate action for product-related concerns
- Work closely with QA and Engineering teams to identify and resolve underlying product issues and prevent recurring failures.
- During troubleshooting calls, provide guidance and recommendations to optimize product usage, improving performance and energy efficiency
- Load programs to PLCs and HMIs on control panels, as well as configure and program VFDs as needed.
- Conduct troubleshooting related to mechanical issues with pumps, electrical issues with VFDs, control panels, and communication problems with building automation systems.
On-Site Support & Coordination
- If an issue cannot be resolved remotely, coordinate and schedule a field service technician or authorized service partner (ASP) for an on-site inspection and diagnosis, ensuring they have a detailed scope of work.
- Travel to local project sites (~10% of the time) for hands-on troubleshooting, start-up assistance, and commissioning of Armstrong supplied equipment.
- Review field service reports from technicians and ASPs, update customers on findings, and communicate any necessary recommendations or required actions.
- Provide customers with quotes for additional work or replacement parts based on field service reports and recommendations.
Customer Support & Service Request Management
- Respond to customer-submitted tickets for warranty claims and service requests, determining the nature of the issue and whether it qualifies as a warranty concern.
- Take ownership of assigned tickets, ensuring timely resolution and proactive communication with customers.
- Follow up with logistics teams on service-related tickets, ensuring prompt handling and shipment of required parts.
- Recommend appropriate replacement part numbers to customers based on troubleshooting findings and service history.
Performance & Process Improvement
- Maintain and improve KPI targets, including average response time and ticket closure time.
- Multitask efficiently by logging cases in the system while actively troubleshooting with customers.
- Work with service coordinators and the National Service Manager to ensure effective scheduling and dispatch of field technicians and ASPs.
- Collaborate with internal teams and vendors to enhance products and service processes, implementing improvements to reduce cycle times and enhance customer experience.
- Provide feedback on new products received from customers, working with product owners to drive enhancements from a service perspective.
- Participate in value stream meetings to provide feedback from a service perspective for product development and improvements.
What Were Looking For
To thrive in this role, you should bring:
Education & Experience
- Diploma or degree in Electrical Engineering, Building Controls/Automation, HVAC, or a related field, with at least three (3) years of relevant experience.
- Alternatively, five (5) years of experience in the HVAC/Controls industry may be considered.
- At least two (2) years of experience working in technical support, customer service, or a related role in an industrial environment.
- Experience with engineering, manufacturing, and distribution operations is an asset.
- Public speaking and training experience is a plus.
Technical Expertise

We are growing and are thrilled to be recruiting in the Edmonton, AB, CA region. Joining a team in our Breast & Skeletal Health Field Service Engineering you will be responsible for preventative maintenance, repairs and servicing of our innovative medical imaging and interventional products. As a Hologic FSE, you travel to our customer sites to ensure our products are calibrated and optimized for high performance. You will be able to build relationships with our customers, putting them at ease that you are there to investigate and solve any technical issues.
**Essential Duties and Responsibilities**
The incumbent may be asked to perform other function-related activities in addition to the below mentioned responsibilities as reasonably required by business needs.
+ Conducts advanced troubleshooting to repair, test and qualify instruments located at assigned territory sites.
+ Provides 24/7 coverage to customers within 24 hours of notification.
+ Schedules and manages preventive maintenance and unscheduled visits to instrument sites.
+ Determines correct inventory levels of repair parts with supply lines.
+ Documents repair/ resolution of customer calls in CRM system and escalates issues to management as needed.
+ Works with Technical Support to resolve quality issues and advise of issues and developments.
+ Keep management advised of issues and developments.
+ Ensure instrumentation is in compliance with regulatory requirements and quality control standards.
**Qualifications**
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the basic knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required:
+ Understanding of proper use and operation of electronic testing equipment.
+ Knowledge of inventory and procurement systems.
+ Ability to interface with internal and/or external customers.
+ Solid computer skills.
+ Time Management Skills
+ Strong robotics, fluidics and pneumatics experience preferred.
+ Ability to pass a comprehensive background check.
+ Possess a valid Driver's License and maintain a clean driving record.
**Education**
+ BS/BA degree or equivalent experience preferred.
+ AA/AS degree and/or practical Military experience considered.
**Experience**
+ 2 - 5 years related field experience with direct customer interaction
**Additional Details:**
+ This person will work out of a home based office
+ Position will require 75% plus travel
+ There will be opportunity for future on-call duties
