As a Risk Assessment Specialist, you will be part of the foundation of our human health and ecological risk assessment (HHERA) group. Candidates can be based in any Matrix office location. The successful applicant will be involved in a broad range of risk assessment, risk management and toxicology projects with responsibilities as follows:


  • Maintain a strong working knowledge of federal and provincial risk-based regulations
  • Act as Technical Accountable for HHERA for a variety of clients for risk-based management of contaminated sites across Canada
  • Provide support as an expert witness if/when needed in the regulatory approval process
  • Provide senior review for quality assurance of technical risk assessment and risk management reports
  • Conduct presentations on regulatory changes to other Matrix technical teams and our clients on an as-needed basis
  • Provide leadership to a team of professionals who conduct HHERA across Canada, often in addition to providing other contaminated sites expertise
  • Work with risk assessment practitioners and contaminated sites project managers to advance risk assessment and risk management skills among Matrix personnel
  • Promote site-specific risk assessment and risk management services within Matrix and externally to clients
  • Lead or contribute to site-specific risk assessment business development opportunities across Canada and provide strategic proposals and budgets for new work opportunities
  • Regularly and effectively communicate with regulators, clients, and technical staff
  • Maintain risk assessment and risk management models and provide training to practitioners
  • Develop and maintain a hazard assessment resource library (e.g., current toxicological profiles).


What We Are Looking For

  • Minimum of 12 years practicing risk assessment and applying Canadian risk assessment protocols
  • M.Sc., M.Eng., or Ph.D. in toxicology, biology, applied chemistry, environmental science, environmental engineering, or related discipline(s)
  • Eligibility or current Professional designation in a relevant association
  • Comprehensive understanding and experience using federal and provincial guidelines and risk assessment frameworks
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to lead and mentor project teams
  • Valid driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in a related discipline (fire protection, mechanical, electrical, or construction)
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario.
  • Experience in the construction industry/project management an asset
  • Ability to read and interpret codes, technical specifications and building construction drawings including architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical.
  • Possesses a Valid drivers license.
  • Ability to travel to jobsites throughout Canada;
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Adobe Acrobat, and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook);
  • Experience in the fire protection industry is an asset.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a dedicated Fire Protection Consultant to join a dynamic team in the Austin, Texas area. This role will be pivotal in project management, technical development, and business growth, contributing to the safety and efficiency of various facilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert fire protection engineering services, including life safety code consulting, sprinkler and fire alarm design, and performance-based fire engineering for a diverse range of facility types across the United States.
  • Conduct comprehensive building and fire code reviews, including detailed plan analyses and site assessments to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Classify hazardous materials and prepare detailed inventory statements for industrial properties, enhancing safety and compliance standards.
  • Assess high-piled storage arrangements and generate thorough reports to support high-piled storage permit applications.
  • Deliver exceptional service to clients by completing projects on time and within budget, consistently meeting or exceeding expectations.
  • Prepare and facilitate peer reviews of project-related technical reports to ensure quality and accuracy.
  • Develop innovative fire protection strategies and performance-based design approaches, offering alternative solutions to complex client design challenges.
  • Foster effective communication with project team members, clients, and external stakeholders to ensure seamless collaboration.
  • Support business development initiatives to expand service offerings and strengthen client relationships.
Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or Civil Engineering.
  • We also welcome candidates with significant industry experience in fire protection, life safety, or code consulting, even if not on a traditional engineering track.
  • EIT Certification preferred.
  • Experience: 2-5 years of related experience.
Skills:

  • Proficiency in software such as AutoCAD, BlueBeam, Microsoft Office Suite, and Revit (preferred).
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and prepare deliverables for peer review with minimal supervision.
  • Professional demeanor with strong interpersonal skills, fostering positive relationships with industry professionals, trades, and regulatory authorities.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of articulating ideas clearly and concisely to both internal and external audiences.
  • Ability to coordinate effectively with multidisciplinary professionals, with prior project management experience considered a plus.
