As the Product Development Technician, you will be responsible for executing internal projects and initiatives related to product development. The product development technician will work closely with other members of the product development team to drive products forward from concept to implementation. There is a key emphasis on conducting benchtop development work and supporting scale-up and manufacturing trials in an organized manner. The ideal candidate must be highly motivated, energetic, and able to work as part of a team and at a fast pace.

This position is based out of Stayner, ON.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Conduct internal product development experiments and prototypes for cannabis products (this includes all product formats such as flower, pre-roll products, edible products, and cannabis concentrate products).
  • Collect and organize data from experiments to present to the rest of the product development team
  • Ensure inventory traceability and administrative documentation of all cannabis product being used for product development activities as well as tech-transfer and scale-up activities.
  • Maintain inventory of raw materials (non-cannabis products) used in cannabis formulations and preparation
  • Participate in R&D stability for Product Development, conducting R&D stability for durable dates, shipping conditions, real-time and accelerated conditions for all products and formats.
  • Analyze raw materials and primary/secondary packaging materials for formulation and shipping compatibility
  • Submitting internal and external lab samples for required testing
  • Working with logistics to ship cannabis and non-cannabis samples to relevant stakeholders and partners
  • Conduct process development experiments, tech-transfer, and scaleup working closely with the production team and 3rd party manufacturers
  • Assist with conducting sensory panels; support panelists in answering formal descriptive analysis and/or consumer sensory aspects of product development
  • General housekeeping and cleaning of product development space, equipment, and tools

Your Environment:

  • Primarily lab-based with some administrative duties. Expect to spend around 85% of your time in laboratory settings, with the remainder at your desk.
  • Capable of adapting to various temperature environments Requires consistent periods of standing, bending, and crouching in a laboratory setting and occasional lifting of materials up to 40lbs
  • Regular daytime shifts from Monday to Friday with potential overtime to support project needs

Reporting directly to the Executive Vice President, this position is responsible for leadership of the Engineering and Estimating teams (7-10 direct reports) directly related to solution selling quote process.   • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Head the New Product Introduction (NPI) Process to ensure smooth onboarding of new business and the successful launch of customer new products.


Requirements

Education/Experience

  • Engineering degree in appropriate field, e.g. Bachelor of Engineer (Mechanical or equivalent) or Technologist diploma
  • Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years or more experience in a similar role leading a team.
  • Significant experience in costing/estimating in a manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledgeable in CNC, aluminum, fabrication and finishing.
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to read 2D and 3D drawings, blueprints (with GD&T).
  • Ability to work well with numbers is essential.
  • Should have a high energy level and must be able to lead a team.
  • Good time management and organizational skills.
  • A solid understanding of the following equipment/technology ; Computers, various PC software, ERP software programs (EPICS, Navision), AUTOCAD, Solid Edge, Solid Works, Microsoft Office Suite.

Purpose of Position

The AI Product Development Assistant is a member of our RISE Next Generation AI team. The goal of this game changing initiative is to develop and implement our next-generation LDS RISE platform that effectively incorporates innovative technologies, including artificial intelligence and advanced information systems to materially enhance our student experience and outcomes, our instructor teaching effectiveness and capacity, our organization efficiencies, and LDS scaling to support significantly more learners.

The AI Product Development Assistant provides support in the assessment, design, development, testing implementation and management of new AI-based tools used by our team and the learners and families we serve.

Principal Roles and Responsibilities

  • Assist with project planning and coordination for the NextGen program (e.g., task tracking, meeting notes, timelines).
  • Assist with the development and testing of LLM-based agent workflows (e.g., data classification, matching algorithms)
  • Support structured data imports, database queries, and organizing data for use in our tools
  • Collect and synthesize feedback from team members and stakeholders to inform iterative development.
  • Draft and refine user-facing documentation and internal process notes, including schemes, API integrations, and sync logic
  • Perform quality assurance testing on frontend/backend features.
  • Support structured data pipeline tasks (e.g., cleaning, mapping, validating imported data)
  • Contribute to research and prototyping of AI/EdTech tools relevant to our roadmapp
  • Support the team with general events and outreach as required.

  • Experience in an engineering or science discipline, ideally with knowledge relating to artificial intelligence, machine learning, software and hardware development, optoelectronics, and mechanical design
  • Experience working on research projects and demonstrated ability to iteratively adapt and evolve research methodology

Technical Experience

  • Strong track record with Python and JavaScript (especially for AI and web app development)
  • Experience working with APIs (RESTful), especially for integrating 3rd-party tools
  • Experience with PostgreSQL or SQLite, including querying and light data wrangling
  • Exposure to large language model (LLM) APIs (e.g., OpenAI, Claude, etc.)
  • Familiarity with collaborative development environments (e.g., GitHub)

Optional but strong asset to have experience with:

  • Django (for backend web development)
  • React and Next.js (frontend)
  • Prompt engineering or LLM-based workflow design

Qualifications

  • Senior years studying in or completion of a universityundergraduate degree in engineering, computer science or a related field

Reports to: Senior Manager, Technology

Hours of work: 40 paid hours per week. The general schedule could be 8:30am 4:30pm, Monday to Friday.

Remuneration and Benefits: Hourly wage rate of 28-35 per hour, commensurate with education and experience
