WHAT YOU WILL DO
Forest Technicians are responsible for providing technical expertise to project teams in all aspects of multiphase timber development including timber reconnaissance, field engineering, riparian and ecological assessments, and GPS traversing. Experience in timber cruising is a strong asset. This is a field-based position that has the potential for out of town and camp work.
QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPENTENCIES
- A safety conscious attitude;
- Post-secondary education with a diploma or degree in a relevant discipline, or 3 years of related field experience;
- Broad understanding of general forestry practices; and
- Valid drivers license and safe driving record.
- Enthusiastic and passionate about forestry and working outdoors in all weather conditions;
- Able to work both independently under limited direct supervision as well as in a dynamic team environment.

Forest Technicians:
Seasonal and co-op forestry staff will be responsible for providing technical support to project teams in all aspects of timber development and silviculture operations. Multiphase timber development includes timber reconnaissance, field engineering, riparian and ecological assessments, timber cruising, and GPS traversing. Silviculture services include surveys, prescription development, planting supervision, and silviculture management.
Four and eight month terms are available for seasonal staff while co-op students will have option of four, eight and twelve month terms. Graduates have excellent opportunities for full-time employment.

Seasonal - Urban Forest Technician, Invasive Species

One seasonal contract lasting approximately 3 months

This position reports to the Supervisor – Invasive Species and is responsible for the implementation of various Invasive Species Capital Projects. This includes assisting with aerial spray or ground spray applications, as well as helping with other programs within the portfolio.
Responsibilities include: inspecting, diagnosing and treating trees and invasive plants in urban areas. The functions performed in this position are in accordance with established procedures and practices. Work is checked and reviewed during the performance of these responsibilities.
Job Responsibilities:- Inspect and diagnose insect, disease, and structural issues from service requests on town street trees and in woodland areas and make recommendations on appropriate treatments
- Application of herbicides and insecticides
- Removal of egg masses from street trees and assessment of LDD Moth infestation level
- Assist with the removal of dead trees; perform minor pruning with hand saw or pruning pole for residents
- Audit contractors performing arboricultural and regeneration work and invasive species management
- Use Town of Oakville asset management software (CityWorks), to search data and create work orders
- Submit and maintain records regarding all activities including work orders, schedules, and student timesheets
- Schedule tree relocation, replacement, regeneration site maintenance
- Assist with scheduling and overseeing public tree planting events.
- Ensure safety of summer students
- Supervise part-time staff and instruct all support staff in the safe and efficient use, care and maintenance of all tools and equipment and arboricultural practices;
- Apply and ensure crew members apply safety precautions and procedures in the performance of duties and in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Ministry of Transportation's Book 7
- Performs maintenance on small stature and young trees and removal of woody invasive plants from the ground with specialized equipment including chainsaws, pole saws, brush saw and chipper
- Perform other duties as assigned
- A Certificate or Diploma in Arboriculture or Forestry from a recognized institution and be an ISA certified arborist.
- An equivalent in education and experience may be considered.
- Ontario Exterminators License, with forestry and landscape modules.
- Chainsaw safety training.
- Applicants must have a minimum of 2-3 years of practical experience in urban forestry.
- Must possess mechanical aptitude an understanding of the Highway Traffic Act and knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Demonstrated effective communication, both oral and written, customer service skills
- Proficient time management skills and flexibility in adjusting between a variety of duties. Ability to work with limited supervision and to work as part of a team.
- Must hold and provide a copy of a valid and unrestricted Ontario Driver's Licence Class G minimum (standard and automatic transmission) with a driving record that demonstrates responsible and safe driving behaviour. Note: Applicants with 6 or more points are ineligible for consideration. The successful applicant, who is a new hire, will be required to provide the Corporation with a current drivers abstract (no older than 30 days) and pass a Town administered road test as a condition of employment.
- Must be willing to work a 40-hour workweek in varying weather conditions and be available to work a rotating shift, including weekend shifts as required.
- Must be physically fit. Demonstrations of the foregoing qualifications may be required through written, oral and practical examinations.
