JOB OVERVIEW   

CI’s Tax, Retirement and Estate Planning (TREP) team at CI Global Asset Management (CI GAM) provides tax, retirement and estate planning support to financial advisors across Canada on behalf of our salesforce to assist with protecting and growing client wealth. Currently, the team is accepting applications for the position of Vice President, Tax, Retirement and Estate Planning based in our Toronto office.

This VP will be responsible for supporting advisors and the CI GAM Sales team by responding to tax, retirement and estate planning questions, presenting and creating informational/educational content and ensuring that TREP-related content materials consistently reflect changes in applicable legislation. The role will act as a vital resource to our distribution team to further enable the growth of our product line-ups through the provision of value-added services. This will include collaboration with wholesaling teams and identifying unique sales opportunities through personal, corporate and trust tax, retirement and estate planning concepts.   

WHAT YOU WILL DO   

  • Work closely with the TREP team and sales team members from across the country to build new relationships and strengthen existing ones via value added services that lead to the sale of CI GAM products and services;   
  • Act as a subject matter expert and educate financial advisors on tax, retirement and estate planning issues and concepts, changes in legislation, and general concepts;  
  • Work with sales to provide education and information to advisors and investors through presentations, consultations, calls, emails and other written communication;   
  • Conduct ongoing sales presentations, participate in promotional road shows, conferences and investor seminars;  
  • Present at CI conferences and related events for financial advisors across multiple distribution channels;  
  • Develop creative articles to be shared with larger audiences on key initiatives and value added propositions;  
  • Participate in media opportunities on relevant topics;   
  • Conduct ongoing research on important industry trends and research;  
  • Build relationships with sales and conduct training as needed on important industry concepts that would assist in promoting CI GAM product;  
  • Work collaboratively with TREP, Sales and other CI GAM departments as needed to gain and share technical knowledge to meet company objectives;   
  • Maintain working knowledge of industry competitors, resources and financial markets to develop and assess suitability of various TREP-related materials and strategies; and  
  • Work collaboratively with TREP team members to develop new topics, promotional material, and deliverables.   

WHAT YOU WILL BRING   

  • A minimum of 8 years of professional experience specializing in tax and estate planning with a preference to experience in a law firm or accounting firm setting;  
  • Expert level knowledge of private client taxation, retirement planning and/or estate planning required;  
  • An accounting or legal designation (e.g. CPA, CA, LL.B, JD, etc.) is required;  
  • A TEP designation and completion of one of the following is strongly preferred: 
    • CPA Canada In-depth Tax Program,  
    • Master of Taxation (MTax) Program, or  
    • Master of Laws (LL.M) in Tax; 
  • CFP designation is an asset;  
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral;   
  • Bilingual in French/English is not required but is an asset;  
  • Knowledge of the Canadian asset management industry is an asset;  
  • Strong research, analytical and project management skills;  
  • Proficiency with various tax and estate planning resources (i.e. Income Tax Act, Canada Revenue Agency guides, case law, bulletins and information circulars, accounting and legal databases, etc.) and an ability to interpret and apply concepts in a practical manner;  
  • Strong presentation and training skills with large and small audiences;  
  • Ability to convey complex technical material to financial advisors and investors in an effective manner;  
  • Entrepreneurial nature – able to work with CI GAM sales teams to identify opportunities and trends;  
  • Strong time management and organizational skills; and  
  • Collaborative and team focused nature, with an ability to work virtually with TREP members and CI GAM sales team members located throughout CI’s offices in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, and Montreal, as well as operating remotely. 

WORKING CONDITIONS   

  • Flexible working conditions, with an in-office requirement of 3 days per week when not travelling;  
  • Travel outside of the office within the Greater Toronto Area may be required for advisor and investor presentations and events, conferences, seminars and other industry events from time to time;
  • Travel outside of the Greater Toronto Area may be requested for road shows, conferences, seminars and other industry events from time to time;

Responsabilités 

  • Diriger plusieurs équipes appelées à servir des clients dans le cadre de mandats de fiscalité internationale pour des sociétés, en offrant notamment des services-conseils sur les occasions de planification fiscale, les stratégies de réduction d’impôt au minimum à l’échelle internationale et les questions de conformité à des entités canadiennes qui exercent des activités à l’étranger.

  • Aider les organisations à déterminer la structure d’entreprise optimale aux fins de l’impôt dans différents pays et collaborer avec les clients pour trouver des méthodes de capitalisation et de financement efficaces. 
  • Réaliser des vérifications diligentes ou des modélisations dans le cadre d’acquisitions potentielles de filiales, de sociétés de personnes ou d’entreprises étrangères par des entités canadiennes.
  • Gérer un éventail de clients en s’assurant de comprendre leurs activités, les risques auxquels ils sont exposés et les façons d’offrir une valeur ajoutée; veiller à répondre à leurs besoins, à bâtir des relations et à faire croître les comptes.
  • Prendre en charge la planification et l’organisation des mandats ainsi que les paramètres financiers des projets (les budgets, les travaux en cours, la facturation, le recouvrement et la comptabilisation des écarts).
  • Assurer un contrôle qualité élevé et appliquer son expertise pour prévoir, cerner et régler les enjeux touchant l’entreprise, les écritures et les rapports de nature financière du client.

  • Compétences et expérience 

  • Titre de CPA
  • Maîtrise en fiscalité ou membre du Barreau
  • 4 à 5 ans d’expérience pertinente de la comptabilité publique ou des services de consultation en fiscalité 
  • Connaissances approfondies de la fiscalité internationale pour les sociétés, notamment en matière de consultation, de conformité et de recherche
  • Expérience dans la préparation et l’examen de documents de conformité fiscale internationale et dans la mise en œuvre de réorganisations fiscales

    Your team’s dynamic:

    We are looking for a Senior Tax Advisor to support the tax function of a Canadian based conglomerate with subsidiaries worldwide. You will have has hands-on experience with the corporate taxation obligations of a Canadian-based multinational and must be a collaborative team member who supports the tax team's success and contributes to the execution of tax strategies. The Senior Tax Advisor, reporting to the Director of Tax, will have the responsibility to assist for the continued evolution of the company’s international structure and be tasked with ensuring compliance with all direct and indirect taxation requirements of multiple countries through a series of systems and system controls that are designed to ensure accurate, timely reporting. You are a team player and single minded in your pursuit of ensuring compliance and achieves this goal through optimizing reporting procedures and driving the successful function of the tax team.

    Your day at a glance:

    • Developing and implementing a strategic tax planning for the corporate group
    • Facilitating and managing the preparation and review of all direct tax compliance, ensuring the accurate and timely filing of all tax forms
    • Finding and implementing opportunities for process improvement in company tax procedures
    • Preparing components of the company's income tax return and other tax documents
    • Maintaining effective control procedures over all aspects of the tax process
    • Facilitating income tax audits, including analysis of documentation and preparation of responses to queries from tax authorities, creating schedules, etc.
    • Monitoring legislative and regulatory tax law developments, communicate the effects of these developments to management and the tax team and create strategies to capitalize on changes to taxation legislation
    • Identifying and managing tax risks

    • Extensive corporate tax knowledge, including international taxation
    • Strong accounting, analytical, and research skills

    Your team’s dynamic:

    We are looking for a Senior Tax Advisor to support the tax function of a Canadian based conglomerate with subsidiaries worldwide. You will have has hands-on experience with the corporate taxation obligations of a Canadian-based multinational and must be a collaborative team member who supports the tax team's success and contributes to the execution of tax strategies. The Senior Tax Advisor, reporting to the Director of Tax, will have the responsibility to assist for the continued evolution of the company’s international structure and be tasked with ensuring compliance with all direct and indirect taxation requirements of multiple countries through a series of systems and system controls that are designed to ensure accurate, timely reporting. You are a team player and single minded in your pursuit of ensuring compliance and achieves this goal through optimizing reporting procedures and driving the successful function of the tax team.

    Your day at a glance:

    • Developing and implementing a strategic tax planning for the corporate group
    • Facilitating and managing the preparation and review of all direct tax compliance, ensuring the accurate and timely filing of all tax forms
    • Finding and implementing opportunities for process improvement in company tax procedures
    • Preparing components of the company's income tax return and other tax documents
    • Maintaining effective control procedures over all aspects of the tax process
    • Facilitating income tax audits, including analysis of documentation and preparation of responses to queries from tax authorities, creating schedules, etc.
    • Monitoring legislative and regulatory tax law developments, communicate the effects of these developments to management and the tax team and create strategies to capitalize on changes to taxation legislation
    • Identifying and managing tax risks
    • Providing support with various internal audits and special tax related projects
    • Providing support and advice to business units on various tax matters

    What makes you a great fit:

    • 3+ years of related experience
    • Extensive corporate tax knowledge, including international taxation
    • Strong accounting, analytical, and research skills
    • Strong skills and experience with Word, Outlook, Excel, Microsoft D365
    • Detailed oriented
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills
    • Strong knowledge of tax code, compliance and procedures for corporations
    • Familiarity with Canadian federal and provincial local reporting requirements
    • Strong experience with a variety of tax operations and ability to drive process improvements
    • Strong ability to utilize project management and accounting best practices to organize and prioritize tasks and the tasks of other tax team members
    • Ability to work well independently as well as the ability to work well with stakeholders and communicate the benefits of tax initiatives
    • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
    • Fluent in French and English, both verbal and written (this role requires interaction with our international collaborators and customers)

    How you will contribute

    • Performing tax due diligence, including reviewing target’s historic tax profile, planning, tax examination, acquisition/disposition, and filing history to assess potential risks and opportunities
    • Using the due diligence process to identify opportunities for further tax efficiencies
    • Structuring transactions in a tax-efficient manner
    • Reviewing and evaluating significant tax attributes, credits and incentives
    • Reviewing and commenting on purchase agreement and disclosure schedules
    • Evaluating potential acquisition structures
    • Modeling transaction scenarios
    • Identifying matters to be addressed post-closing, including integration related risks and opportunities

    Responsibilities:

    • Demonstrate an understanding of increasingly complex tax concepts and effectively apply tax knowledge to client situations;
    • Develop and deliver quality tax planning approaches with timely and responsive services and work product that meets and/or exceeds client expectations;
    • Perform due diligence including review of tax returns, financials, and other tax documentation to evaluate potential tax risks and opportunities;
    • Review and comment on tax aspects of financial models;
    • Review and comment on tax aspects of purchase agreements;
    • Coordinate with state and local and international tax team members, as well as financial and operational due diligence team members, to deliver highest quality integrated work product;
    • Develop and maintain client relationships;

    Qualifications:

    • CPA, JD (with bachelor's degree in accounting, preferred), Masters in Taxation, or LLM
    • Experience in a mergers and acquisitions tax practice
    • Knowledge of accounting and financial reporting
    • Strong writing, analytical, research, excel, and organizational skills
    • Strong communication, presentation, project management, and business development skills
    • Strong sense of personal motivation as well as the ability to work with a team

    The Tax Consultant job has a dual role focusing on both indirect and direct taxes in Canada. The individual will be part of a Canadian tax and customs team. The candidate independently prepares tax forms and performs moderately complex tax research and analysis, and tax compliance activities.     + TAX COMPLIANCE & INQUIRY RESPONSES: Provides support to the organization's subsidiaries, joint ventures, business staff and tax department personnel by responding to moderately complex tax inquiries and tax transactions issues.
    + TAX COMPLIANCE ACTIVITIES: Participates in tax compliance projects, coordinates and monitors tax, financial and compliance systems for troubleshooting, training, and data quality purposes, and oversees and completes general processes related to statutory and or generally accepted accounting principles for tax related items.
    + TAX COMPLIANCE PROCESS IMPROVEMENT: Reviews and guides businesses to accurately follow compliance processes, analyzes compliance processes and or the applications used in these processes to draw conclusions and recommend improvements to increase and ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of compliance processes.
