Reporting to the Director of HR, the Health & Safety Specialist is responsible for our safety program at BD Diesel. This role is responsible for developing, implementing, and continuously improving workplace health and safety initiatives to ensure compliance with WorkSafeBC regulations and industry best practices. The ideal candidate will be proactive in identifying risks, educating employees, and fostering a strong safety culture across all departments. As a key resource for the organization, this role will work closely with management, employees, and the Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) to drive safety improvements and prevent workplace incidents.

This role is based in our Abbotsford location and this role is a fully onsite role.

Requirements

· Develop, implement, and maintain the company’s health and safety policies and programs to ensure compliance with WorkSafeBC and other applicable regulations.

· Conduct regular safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments to identify hazards and recommend corrective actions.

· Lead incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective action implementation to prevent recurrence.

· Develop and deliver safety training programs, including onboarding safety orientations, hansai meetings, and emergency response training.

· Monitor and Chair the Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC), ensuring effectiveness and compliance.

· Maintain records related to workplace training, injuries, incidents, safety audits, and compliance reporting.

· Develop, implement, and oversee equipment inspection protocols, ensuring all tools, machinery, and safety equipment are regularly checked, maintained, and compliant with regulatory standards.

· Establish and manage safety checklists to ensure consistent compliance with safety procedures and best practices across all work areas.

· Assist managers and supervisors in implementing best practices for workplace safety.

· Support ergonomic assessments and initiatives to reduce workplace injuries.

· Stay current with regulatory changes and industry best practices, advising leadership on necessary adjustments.

· Provide safety support and consultation for Burnout Brands’ broader operations, including U.S. locations, as needed.

· Other duties as assigned by your manager.

Education and Experience:

· Minimum 3 years of experience in a health and safety role, preferably in a manufacturing or industrial setting.

· Strong knowledge of WorkSafeBC regulations and other relevant occupational health and safety legislation.

· Certification in Occupational Health & Safety (e.g., CRSP, CHSC, or equivalent) is an asset.

· Experience conducting safety audits, investigations, and risk assessments.

· Strong communication and training skills with the ability to engage employees at all levels.

· Proficiency in Microsoft Office and safety management software.

· Must be legally authorized to work in Canada.

Pay: $60,000 to $80,000/ year

Job Summary:

Reporting to the Health & Safety Manger, the H&S Senior Specialist engages directly with all lines of business at Whistler Blackcomb to provide Health & Safety guidance, support and resources to strengthen H&S programs. This role involves working directly with multiple stakeholders to ensure Health & Safety training, incident reviews, auditing and documentation is being conducted and will also work to manage policies and programs that are driven by the company and regulatory agencies such as WorkSafeBC. The role requires strong technical skills combined with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Conduct formal and informal audits of H&S programs and execute follow up and feedback as necessary.
  • Facilitate H&S training to department leaders as required and provide ongoing support
  • Support WhistlerBlackcomb supervisors & managers with incident investigations, follow up with action plans and ensure documentation of work
  • Monitor electronic employee records, report and follow up on deficiencies
  • Support Joint Occupation H&S Committee
  • Support the contractor safety program
  • Support the Manager of Health and Safety and serve in their absence
  • Responding to inquiries and advising department leaders on specific H&S-related matters
  • Identify and recommend opportunities to expand H&S training programs and resources to meet departmental or enterprise needs
  • Monitor and update H&S content and resources on internal website to reflect new information and regulatory changes
  • Develop an understanding of the core business needs and historic/current/predictive safety metrics in order to adjust safety strategy accordingly.
  • Execute projects as assigned

Job Requirements:

  • Post-Secondary degree, diploma or certificate in H&S or related field
  • Experience with safety management systems and injury management practices
  • Comprehensive understanding of WorkSafeBC
  • Experience with project management, implementing new initiatives, delivering in person and online training
  • Experience working independently & as a part of a team with proven time management and organizational skills
  • Experience providing clear and affective feedback to all levels within an organization
  • Experience collecting, analyzing and interpreting data
  • Experience conducting audits
  • Proven ability to gain cooperation and build relationships with a broad range of partners and stakeholders
  • BC Driver License
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and virtual meeting platforms (Teams, Zoom)
  • Proficient in English
  • Able to ski or snowboard at an intermediate level
  • Certificate of Recognition (COR) Internal Auditor an asset

Job Responsibilities:

  • Environmental Management : Develop and implement environmental policies and procedures. Monitor and manage waste disposal, air emissions, and wastewater discharge to ensure compliance with environmental regulations. Conduct environmental impact assessments and manage sustainability initiatives to minimize the company's ecological footprint.
  • Training and Education : Conduct training sessions for employees on environmental, health, and safety practices. Ensure employees are aware of and understand safety protocols and emergency procedures. Promote a culture of safety and environmental responsibility among the workforce
  • Incident Investigation: Investigate workplace accidents, incidents, and near-misses to determine root causes. Develop and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence. Maintain records of incidents and follow up on corrective actions.
  • Emergency Response: Develop and maintain emergency response plans for various scenarios, including chemical spills, fires, and natural disasters. Coordinate and conduct emergency drills to ensure readiness. Act as a point of contact during emergency situations and coordinate response efforts.
  • Audits and Inspections: Conduct regular internal audits and inspections to ensure compliance with EHS policies and regulations. Identify areas for improvement and work with management to implement changes. Track and report on the effectiveness of EHS programs and initiatives.
  • Reporting and Documentation: Prepare and submit required reports to regulatory agencies. Maintain accurate records of EHS activities, training, and incidents. Provide regular updates and reports to management on EHS performance and initiatives.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Serve as the liaison between the company and regulatory agencies, community groups, and other stakeholders on EHS matters. Address employee concerns related to health and safety and provide guidance as needed.

Job Qualifications:

  • Education : A bachelor's degree in a relevant field is required. Common fields of study include Environmental Science, Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or a related discipline. Certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or Certified Environmental Professional (CEP) are beneficial.
  • Minimum of 1-4 years of experience in an EHS leadership role in the manufacturing industry or similar. Preferably in the automotive or plastics plastic industry.
  • Familiarity with ISO 14001 and/or OHSAS 18001/ISO/45001 standards
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of EHS regulations, standards, and best practices. Knowledge of environmental laws (e.g., Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act) and occupational health and safety regulations (e.g., OSHA standards). Familiarity with automotive manufacturing processes and potential EHS risks associated with them. Knowledge of Canadian Federal and State OHS Acts, Policies, Regulations, Codes, and Practices for areas of operation, and knowledge of Canadian Federal and State environmental regulations and laws
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to conduct risk assessments, hazard analyses, and incident investigations. Proficiency in data analysis and reporting to track EHS performance and identify trends.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for training, reporting, and liaising with regulatory agencies, employees, and management.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Strong problem-solving abilities to identify root causes of incidents and develop effective corrective actions.
  • Project Management Skills: Experience managing EHS projects and initiatives, including setting goals, developing plans, and tracking progress.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.

Overview of role

We're looking for a proactive and people-oriented EHS Specialist to join our growing team. Based out of Halifax, NS , you’ll lead and support environmental, health, and safety programs across our Halifax and Stoney Creek locations plus future sites across Eastern Canada.

You’ll play a hands-on role in shaping our safety culture, supporting compliance efforts, and ensuring a healthy, hazard-aware workplace. This is a high-impact, field-forward role that blends compliance, training, risk assessment, and cross-site collaboration.

What you’ll be doing

  • Lead day-to-day EHS activities across multiple sites, including site walkthroughs, hazard analysis, and compliance checks.
  • Deliver safety training , support new hire onboarding, and ensure contractor safety programs are in place and effective.
  • Conduct and update Risk Assessments on new and existing equipment, processes, and materials.
  • Participate in projects and process changes as the EHS voice at the table ensuring safe and compliant rollouts.
  • Prepare and submit annual regulatory reports ; maintain permits and ensure environmental compliance at all locations.

Requirements

  • 2–4 years of EHS experience in industrial, warehousing, or plant settings. Degree in Occupational Health & Safety or Environmental Science preferred (but not required).
  • Familiarity with key Canadian EHS regulations (e.g. CEPA, CCOHS, CanOSH) and provincial OHS requirements.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and time management skills; you can manage multiple priorities and communicate clearly both in-person and virtually.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and confident in using EHS documentation systems and databases.
  • Comfortable conducting safety training, audits, and walkabouts - you're a confident presence on the floor.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently while staying connected to a remote team.
  • Able to travel up to 30% within Canada (some flexibility required).
