Position Title: Registered Veterinary Technologist (RVT) Internal Medicine
Reports to: Lead Specialty RVT

Position Summary
The Internal Medicine Registered Veterinary Technologist (RVT) is empowered and responsible to act as a highly trained RVT on the clinical floor to set an example of patient care, client care, and teamwork at Pulse Veterinary Specialists & Emergency.
The Internal Medicine RVT will report to the Lead Specialty RVT and work closely with Dr. Cyrus and Dr. Moreno to deliver high level patient care.
The ideal candidate values maintaining a collegial working culture and prioritizes embracing the strategy, commitments, and goals of the organization to deliver high standards of medicine and exceptional patient care.
This role will allow for a compressed work week with four 10-hour shifts, Tuesday through Friday, with the potential to pick-up extra overtime and on-call shifts.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs all technical responsibilities of a RVT including:
- Usage and care of medical equipment, as well as sterilization techniques.
- Placing IV catheters; calculating drug doses, fluid requirements and CRIs.
- Collection and submission of various laboratory samples for testing.
- Administer chemotherapy drugs orally and intravenously. Including appropriate use of PPE and fume hood.
- Understanding higher risk anesthesia and monitoring for the internal medicine patient.
- Performing CPR.
- Producing diagnostic quality radiographs.
- Understanding and assisting with advanced diagnostics/treatments including rhinoscopy, bronchoscopy, endoscopy, ultrasound, and CT scans
- Patient management and set up of the C-Arm for Tracheal fluoroscopy, Esophagrams, and Cystourethrograms
- Managing hospitalized patients, performing recovery care, and assisting with specialized treatments
- Substantial medical record management is required.
- Continuous follow-up with patients and clients due to the chronic disease caseload.
- Provide education, home care instructions, and nutritional counseling to clients.
- General supervision of Technologist Assistant (TA) team members.
- Provide support and enhances the educational experience of senior year veterinary students, interns, and residents.
- Support management with customer complaints as required in partnership with the Lead Specialty RVT and Hospital Manager, interacting with clients to deescalate, resolve issues in a timely fashion.
- Maintains practice software including client and patient record management.
- Follows all SOPs to support smooth hospital operations.
- Follows all federal and provincial animal health laws and regulations regarding workplace health and safety.
- Openly and proactively communicates updates to DVMs, Lead Specialty RVT and other department team members. Prioritize interdepartmental synergy by maintaining open lines of communication with other departments.
Other duties may be assigned as required.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have:
Education and Experience
- Animal Health Technology college diploma.
- Previous RVT experience is preferred.

THE OPPORTUNITY
GBGH is seeking locum General Internal Medicine/Intensivists to staff the General Medicine service, GIM Stress Test Clinic, and our Level 3 Basic Intensive Care Unit. Responsibilities include:
ICU COVERAGE
- Seven (7) day shifts of ICU Most Responsible Physician duty in 8 bed unit
- Weekend shifts may also be available
- Must be competent in airway management including non-invasive ventilation, intubation and invasive ventilation, and invasive monitoring including central line and arterial line insertion
ON-CALL
- The GBGH Internists will arrange their schedule to ensure coverage 24 x 7 x 365 for response to Emergency Department consultations, Inpatient consultations and ICU Most Responsible Physician Duty
- Read ECG, PFTs when on call
IN-PATIENT
- Consultations for GBGH credentialed staff and Emergency Department Follow-up in collaboration with Family Physicians and Hospitalists
OUT-PATIENT
- Provision of out-patient consultations in Medicine Consult Clinic Outpatient procedures such as paracentesis and thoracentesis Cardiac stress testing
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
The ideal candidate will possess the following key competencies, record of experience and academic preparation:
- College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) unrestricted license that allows the physician to fulfil the requirements of this position
- Fellowship in Internal Medicine recognized by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC)
- Previous General Internal Medicine and Critical Care experience in a community hospital setting preferred

What is the Guelph CHC?
The Guelph CHC is located in the vibrant City of Guelph, Ontario, and provides primary care services and community health programs using an interdisciplinary, team-based approach. We have innovative client-centered services delivered by interdisciplinary teams. Our clinical team consists of family physicians, nurse practitioners, and registered practical nurses, who work collaboratively with allied health workers, including social workers, dietitians, outreach workers, and cultural interpreters.

Primary Responsibilities:
- Provide comprehensive, harm reduction focused, non-stigmatizing, wraparound health care and substance use options for people with complex physical, mental health and substance use needs.
- Work with an interdisciplinary team (including Nurse Practitioners) to offer assessment and treatment, preventative care, episodic health care, primary care and substance use health care.
- Use a low barrier, compassionate approach to providing health care, meeting clients where they are at, considering equity and lack of access to social determinants of health, including income, housing, and food.
- Offer both appointment-based and walk-in care, working with the allied health team to reduce barriers to accessing health care
- Attend daily huddles to share and receive updates about the program, the organization and/or client care
- Participate in Guelph CHCs on call rotation as required (consisting of after-hours phone availability) and occasional home visits as necessary
- Attend meetings as requested to support program development, evaluation and improvements
- Ensure high quality and safe care is delivered by maintaining complete and accurate medical records, participating in chart reviews and support the implementation of new guidelines and Medical Directives
Qualifications:
- Licensed Family Physician, as per the requirements of the Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons, with CCFP certification
- Possess or is eligible to obtain required malpractice coverage with CMPA (this coverage is eligible for reimbursement)
- Experience working with communities and individuals who face barriers to accessing health care services (e.g. clients experiencing homelessness, mental health concerns, using street drugs etc.)
- Previous experience in community health/social services and/or a values-based organization is an asset
- A demonstrated commitment to health equity and alignment with the CHC model of care
- Proficient in the use of software applications including Outlook and electronic medical record systems
