The Role: Medical Laboratory Assistant in Toronto
  • Collect client specimens, including blood, urine, and other biological samples, using appropriate methods and equipment.

The Senior Medical Lab Technologist reports to the Clinical Services Manager, Laboratory Medicine and works under the supervision of the Charge Technologist, Pathology and Medical Authority for Pathology for day-to-day tasks/duties.

Accountabilities:

  • Performs all front-line technical functions, operation and maintenance protocols, quality assurance and quality control procedures; monitors for compliance
  • Designate for Charge Technologist/supervisor ; resource for front-line staff
  • Act as subject matter expert and technical resource for staff
  • Collaborates with peers, direct supervisors, professional leader and quality manager; using the organizational reporting structure to address conflict and develop solutions prior to escalation
  • Participates in the development and review of technical procedures
  • Maintains strong working knowledge of current technical methodologies, performance standards and evidence-based practice
  • Actively involved in the inventory management process; orders product, ensures stock rotation, identifies and reports non-conformances (e.g. unacceptable, expired or discarded products)
  • Monitors for compliance to policies and procedures; coaches, educates and trains as required

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited medical laboratory technology program or equivalent education
  • Must be registered with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario
  • Minimum three years experience as a laboratory technologist required
  • Experience with hospital information systems, laboratory information systems and Paradigm document control software required
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to mentor and coach staff; strong conflict resolution skills
  • Management and supervisory courses an asset
  • Proven skills and competence in departmental policies, processes and procedures
  • Experience in developing policies, processes and procedures, duties and responsibilities
  • Working knowledge of departmental budgets and schedules an asset

**Position Summary**

We are looking for a **Lab Technician** based at our **London Ice Cream Factory,** reporting into the **Quality Assurance Supervisor.** This role is part of the Quality Assurance team and will be responsible to perform various lab analyses, document results, and contribute to a safe and quality product for our consumers.

**A day in the life of a Lab Technician:**

- Follow all job-related guidelines and procedures for personal safety, food safety, environment and company security (including but not limited to use of PPE’s, Hazard Analysis, chemical spills, recycling …) as required. Be a role model for Quality and GMP’s.
- Work in a manner that provides maximum safety to yourself and your fellow associates
- Follow NCE (Nestlé Continuous Excellence) principles
- Perform routine lab analysis and QA duties following the Quality procedures and standards including:
- Analyze samples, including micro plating and chemical analysis
- Document results (e.g. in SAP) and organize test results for records review and analysis
- Calibrate and maintain lab equipment, including housekeeping, cleaning, and 5S
- Perform daily records review of raw material, in-process, and finished product quality data
- Responsible for the release of materials meeting quality specifications
- Perform test on pre-operational microbiological samples, review test results, coordinate any corrective actions, and manage test data
- Communicate results to other departments within factory
- Responsible for blocking of any product that does not meet quality specifications
- Work with other departments to initiate corrective actions and conduct root cause investigations
- Responsible for sensory panels and any other sensory-related duties
- Adhere to Quality Monitoring Scheme (QMS) and put corrective action in place in case of deviation.
- Responsible for managing, updating and ensuring synergy between SAP, DMO and QMS.
- Responsible for tasks associated with compliance to Nestle internal standards, as well as external standards
- Know and adhere to GMP’s to prevent product contamination with foreign materials, bacteria or allergens;
- Champion a non-negotiable attitude for Quality and Safety
- Other duties as assigned by management.

**What will make you successful?**

- B.Sc. in biology, microbiology, Chemistry, nutrition or science/food related field or a College diploma in science/food related field
- Relevant work experience in a laboratory environment
- Experience in analytical methods and have the ability to accurately perform various physical, chemical and microbiological testing.

- Excellent communication skills to be able to effectively communicate within the department and with other departments via emails, in person, or on the phone.
- Great attention to details is a must. Any failure can pose risks to Quality or Food Safety.
- Ability to effectively work with Microsoft Office programs (e.g. Outlook, Excel).
- Ability to carry out jobs/tasks with minimum supervision.
- Independent decision-making ability and possess good organizational skills.
- Interpersonal skills and ability to work successfully in the team environment.

Le technicien effectuera plusieurs fonctions de production en soutien à la croissance et à la purification de nos cultures d'algues. Le titulaire du poste sera également responsable de participer aux projets d'amélioration des processus et aux projets d'expansion.

Responsabilités

  • Suivre les procédures établies
  • Suivre, respecter et maintenir les normes ISO-9001
  • Travailler de manière stérile et consciencieuse
  • Travailler selon les bonnes pratiques de laboratoire
  • Participer à la production des milieux de culture
  • Cultiver des microalgues dans des photobioréacteurs
  • Effectuer le nettoyage et la stérilisation du matériel de laboratoire
  • Effectuer l'entretien et l'étalonnage de l'équipement de laboratoire lorsque nécessaire
  • Remplir les formulaires de production
  • Participer aux initiatives d'amélioration continue
  • Effectuer des révisions de SOP
  • Maintenir les normes de santé et de sécurité dans l'espace de laboratoire
  • Garder l'espace de travail propre

Requirements

  • Technical degree or higher in Biotechnology or closely related field
  • Excellent laboratory technique and communication skills, with a broad knowledge of chemistry methods
  • Comfortable working in a production environment
  • Regularly perform work that requires standing, bending, and stooping
  • Fluency in French, both oral and written. Bilingualism is an asset
  • Familiar with sterile work techniques

Summary

Reporting to the Group Leader, the Laboratory Technician is responsible for preparing and pre-processing fresh samples, as well as supporting experiment preparation by managing solutions, consumables, and labels. The role also involves preparing solutions and contributing to the maintenance and upkeep of equipment, as well as receiving reagents and materials and handling inventory management.

Responsibilities

More specifically, you will participate in the following:

  • Perform sample preparation such as cell isolation from blood samples, cryopreservation, thawing, and counting;
  • Provide general support in experiment preparation such as plastic identification and label preparation;
  • Prepare solutions and reagent aliquots;
  • Perform equipment maintenance, calibration, and cleaning;
  • Replenish stock materials and perform inventory;
  • Perform file archiving.

Education

  • DEC in Laboratory Technology, preferably with a biotechnology specialization.

Main Requirements

  • 1 year experience in a laboratory, an asset;
  • Experience working in a biological safety cabinet under sterile conditions;
  • Experience with PBMC (isolation by Ficoll or CPT, cryopreservation, thawing, counting with hemocytometer), an asset;
  • Experience in a GLP/GCLP environment, an asset;
  • Organized and rigorous in the conduct of their work;
  • Good record keeping skills and attention to detail;
  • Dynamic and motivated.

Working Conditions

  • 100% onsite;
  • Rotating schedule of evening and weekend shifts: Monday to Friday from 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM, and Saturday & Sunday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Note: A shift premium is applied;
  • Must accept to perform activities in a Biosafety Level (BSL) 1 or 2 laboratory where biological samples may be either naturally or experimentally infected with potentially hazardous viruses such as HIV, HCV, or CMV.
