IISD Experimental Lakes Area (IISD-ELA) is one of the worlds most influential freshwater research facilities. It features a collection of 58 small lakes and their watersheds in northwestern Ontario, Canada. For over 50 years, scientists at IISD-ELA have conducted whole-ecosystem experiments and made significant scientific discoveries related to issues such as acid rain, mercury from air pollution, algal blooms, and pharmaceutical chemicals in water.The facility is operated by the International Institute for Sustainable Developmentan independent think tank headquartered in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on Treaty 1 territory, the traditional land of Anishinaabeg, Cree, Ojibwe-Cree, Dakota, and Dene Peoples, and homeland of the Mtis Nation.

IISD-ELA acknowledges that its research facility is located on Treaty 3 lands, and the care of these lands during experimentation and restoration to their original state is implicit in its mission. Many regional schools come to the facility to learn more about the science of aquatic ecosystems.

Overview

The Facilities Maintenance Technician will be crucial in maintaining the operational efficiency, security, and functionality of the facility. Working closely with the Facilities Manager, they will be responsible for the upkeep of infrastructure, equipment, and access roads. This role requires a versatile individual with strong mechanical aptitude to handle various responsibilities, from troubleshooting equipment issues to performing general maintenance.


Based full-time at the IISD-ELA site, the Facilities Maintenance Technician collaborates closely with the Facilities Manager to ensure the facility is fully operational and secure for both the site and personnel.

Responsibilities

Facility Maintenance and Management

  • Provide technical services for maintenance, repair, procurement, and life-cycle management of infrastructure and mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and security systems and equipment.
  • Conduct regular maintenance and monitoring of fuel and propane storage facilities, recording and reporting fuel usage, and making fuel orders as required.
  • Maintain field equipment (boats, motors, snowmobiles, ATVs) and off-site facilities (trails, boat landings, docks) year-round.
  • Manage utilities maintenance, including HVAC, structural/roof, roads/grounds, water supply, power supply, and plumbing.
  • Troubleshoot, perform preventative maintenance, and make upgrades to equipment, including operating automated building control systems.
  • Perform year-round maintenance on access roads, including winter plowing, washout repair, ditching, brushing, culvert replacement, and ongoing damage control.



Data Collection and Record-Keeping

  • Assist in collecting data from the IISD-ELA Meteorological Facility and other research projects.
  • Keep records for reporting purposes, including maintenance of water treatment equipment, water pumping data, sewage lift station pump hours, and other reporting streams.

Supervision and Safety

  • Supervise staff and contractors as required.
  • Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Certification or apprenticeship in mechanical and/or electrical systems.
  • Experience in one or more skilled trades is an asset.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Skilled in troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, repairs, and upgrades of various equipment; may include vehicles or field equipment such as outboard motors, boats, ATVs, and snowmobiles.
  • Knowledge of HVAC, roads/grounds maintenance, water supply, power supply, electrical and plumbing.

  • Additional interest in the overall research plan of IISD-ELA is an asset. Experience working and living in a remote facility is also beneficial to this position.

The successful candidate will provide general facilities maintenance of college buildings, grounds, and equipment; with the expectation to operate and maintain all tools and equipment related to these functions. Qualifications:

Heavy physical effort is expected and is required to move furniture, etc., up to approximately 50 pounds (23 kg). A current driver's license is required, as well as front end loader experience (snow removal in winter months).

The Role

Since establishment in 1985, over 4000 students have graduated successfully from FNTI with certificates, diplomas and degrees, granted in partnership with Ontarios Colleges and Universities. An Indigenous post-secondary institution, FNTI offers programs targeted at Indigenous learners across a wide range of post-secondary disciplines including aviation, health, business, and public administration. FNTI delivers programming locally through its main campus in Tyendinaga on Ontarios beautiful Bay of Quinte, as well as in numerous community locations throughout Ontario.

Under the direct supervision of the Facilities Manager, this position is responsible for performing a wide variety of maintenance, cleaning, planning and execution duties in order to provide a safe, clean and maintained operational facilities.

The Facilities/Maintenance Lead works closely with other Facilities/Maintenance Assistants and coordinates their daily functions. The Facilities/Maintenance Lead also provides support to the Facilities Manager in the planning and budgeting of relevant supplies, products and services.

Responsibilities:

Coordination:

  • Development and implementation of maintenance and custodial practices
  • Coordinates maintenance employees day-to-day activities
  • Organize workflow and ensure that subordinates understand duties and delegated tasks
  • Monitor employee productivity and provide constructive feedback and coaching

Cleanliness of Facilities:

  • Dusting and cleaning of all surfaces, work areas,
  • light fixtures, walls, hangar and maintain storage areas.
  • This includes vacuuming, mopping, waxing and shampooing.
  • As well as the removal and disposal of garbage from wastebaskets and coordination of composting and recyclables
  • Cleanliness and maintenance of washrooms in all facilities as a priority for frequent monitoring and remediation.
  • Tests and evaluates new cleaning products effectiveness
  • Assists with inventory control

Maintenance:

  • Assists with and carries out minor mechanical maintenance
  • Schedules and ensures completion of preventative maintenance tasks
  • Respond to and troubleshoot any issues, acting to resolve and repair
  • Analyzes data to find solutions to predict and resolve issues
  • Inspects equipment to identify and arrange repair or replacement needs
  • Performs preventative maintenance in and around facilities; inspects and replaces air filters in furnaces, HRV and A/C units, water filters; drains off sediment in water heaters
  • Perform and/or report minor repairs

Administrative:

  • Assists the Manager of Facilities in the development of long-range maintenance / facility plans and budgets
  • Ensures all paperwork and documentation are kept up-to-date and accurately completed
  • Serves as a link between subordinates and management

Health and Safety:

  • Promotes safe work practices in accordance with Occupational Health & Safety and FNTI Policy
  • Identifies and report unsafe conditions
  • Tests emergency lighting and alarm systems
  • Advises staff on security procedures
  • Responds to urgent/emergency concerns through use of cell phone
  • Acts as the point person for building security and respond to alarm calls; interacts with police, fire and emergency services
  • Other related duties as assigned

Qualifications:


  • Secondary School diploma or equivalent
  • Experience with industrial /office cleaning procedures
  • Valid Class G drivers license and an acceptable driving record
  • Demonstrated technical/mechanical aptitude and ability
  • Knowledge of WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System)
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Dependable, bondable
  • An acceptable Vulnerable Sector Check or CPIC
  • Valid CPR and first aid

Conditions of Employment:

  • Willing and able to travel on occasion as well as work overtime as required
  • Successful candidates must provide a satisfactory CPIC and vulnerable sector check
