Housing Support Worker


Daytime hours with full benefits. Meaningful work serving clients with mental health and addictions background.

Hours: 40 hours per week.

Position Description:

Reporting to the Housing Coordinator, the Housing Support Worker is primarily responsible for assisting in serving meals to clients in transitional housing at St. Michaels Homes, as well as assisting clients with primary care tasks e.g. laundry and cleaning of their room in order to aid in their recovery from the impact of addictions.


Responsibilities include:

  • Heats and serves lunch and dinner to residents five days a week
  • Completes daily checklists of food served to residents
  • Stores food safely after serving and manages leftovers for absent residents
  • Maintains the cleanliness of the kitchen and dining area, including the fridges and other appliances for storing food
  • Models best practices in Food Services and articulates these to Food Services Staff and trainees, and other staff and clients
  • Assists residents with day-to-day tasks, such as laundry, cleaning their room and maintaining their personal hygiene.
  • Assists clients with arranging and attending appointments, such as banking or medical, etc.
  • Utilize EMHware to maintain and update client records as needed
  • Ensures the security of the building
  • Providing support to residents through informal counselling and brief intervention
  • Providing support to the Housing team with program tasks as needed
  • Other duties as required


Qualifications:

  • Experience in Food Services and/or Hospitality
  • Experience and/or education in Peer Support, Personal Support work, and/or Community/Social Service work an asset
  • Possess basic computer skills, specifically in Microsoft 365 environment.
  • Awareness and appreciation of client needs specific to the addictions and mental health field
  • Completion of standard staff training modules
  • Completion of Food Handler Certification


Working Conditions

  • Ability to attend regularly scheduled meetings and engage in impromptu supervisory conversations
  • Ability to stand for long periods of the day
  • Ability to lift at least 30 lbs.

  • Skilled in managing individuals who are anxious or escalated, including strong crisis de-escalation skills.
  • Experience and skills working with individuals affected by poverty, violence, homelessness, institutionalization (incarceration), stigma, racism and/or homophobia/transphobia.
  • Knowledge of the impact of social/cultural/economic factors on the determinants of health.
  • Knowledge, understanding and sensitivity to the complexity of issues arising for individuals who have experienced homelessness, addictions, poverty and/or mental illness.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within and across interdisciplinary teams and community partners.
  • Ability to work with clients presenting with a wide range of mental health issues.
  • Demonstrated flexibility, sound judgment, initiative and creativity.

  • assisting with minor repairs and maintenance (such as light bulb changes), as required.

3. Performs administrative responsibilities, including:

  • maintaining reports such as statistics, logbooks, tenant daily activity records;
  • preparing Incident Reports for staff follow-up and for the Health and Safety Committee;
  • assisting the Manager with the development of protocols, policies, procedures and/or proposals;
  • assisting in fundraising, public relations campaigns, workshops and special events.

4. Other related duties, including:

  • maintaining regular contact with, and providing back-up for team members and other staff as required;

Education:

  • Training and/or education in a related human/social service field is an asset
  • Conflict resolution/crisis prevention training and experience is an asset

Experience:

The HSW role acts as a resource to staff and tenants and is responsible for providing a full range of services which includes mental health and addiction supports, monitoring the activities of tenants and visitors, assessing and responding to potential crisis situations, maintaining building common areas and supervising the property.

ABOUT YWCA TORONTO – HOUSING SUPPORT PROGRAM, CHURCH STREET
YWCA Toronto Church Street facility includes 120 units of permanent housing. The Case Worker is responsible for providing case management support to women and gender diverse people including: individuals with complex mental health issues and who are chronically homeless or at risk of homelessness; individuals transitioning from provincially-funded institutions and service systems such as hospitals or prisons; Indigenous women/two-spirit people.  The program goals include housing stabilization, harm reduction, and health promotion. Individual and group support assists tenants to identify and build the skills required to address the barriers they experience in their lives and to maintain their housing.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Uses effective eviction prevention measures to assist tenants to assume and maintain their tenancy obligations;
  • Provides crisis prevention, intervention and counseling for women and children and gender diverse people to respond to crisis in ways that support individual and community well-being;
  • Monitor and update caseworkers on tenants’ health and wellbeing;
  • Models and coaches tenants to use conflict resolution and mediation skills to support positive relations between tenants;
  • Provides case management follow-up supports, and referrals in the areas of health and wellness, harm reduction, counselling, income and food security;
  • Conducts health and safety assessments, and identifies tenants’ issues/resources;
  • Demonstrates and maintains knowledge of relevant legislation regarding housing services, Child Welfare, the dynamics of gender violence, substance use and mental health, and effective support strategies;
  • Applies trauma informed practice knowledge, stays current and demonstrates skill in the area of trauma support and acts as a resource to security staff and tenants during the overnight;
  • Working with the Manager, participates in the team as a specialist in the area of innovative community development and capacity building with marginalized and mixed communities;
  • Ensures accurate, timely documentation of program and tenant support initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • General knowledge of an academic or technical discipline normally acquired through the completion of an undergraduate degree (example: Bachelor of Social Work) (Cases for Equivalency will be considered) ;
  • 1 - 3 years directly related experience working in a housing/shelter setting in a direct service setting with children, youth and adults who experience impacts of poverty, homelessness/ violence/trauma, mental health/addictions, or concurrent disorders;
  • Excellent crisis intervention and conflict mediation skills, with ability to remain calm in crisis;
  • Proven experience working independently, developing and facilitating groups;
  • Demonstrated experience in cultivating leadership within groups and developing dynamic and innovative programming;
  • Supportive counseling and group-work approach that is flexible, client-centered and strengths-based
  • working knowledge of harm reduction principles and practice;
  • knowledge of community resources and supports focused on trauma;
  • Working knowledge of the Residential Tenancies Act, Housing Services Act, and Ontario Human Rights Code
  • Ability to deliver culturally sensitive services;

Overview:

Job Summary
The Residential Support Worker provides a range of assistance and supports to clients living with mental illnesses in a Program residence or independently in the community.

What You Will Do
Through a team oriented professional approach, the position provides support to the client to increase their independence, dignity and self-respect, in a safe and secure environment by:
  • Building a rapport with each individual and providing coaching or mentoring to enable each in meeting the daily requirements of their housing environment and a healthy lifestyle; directly assisting with their daily living activities, particularly in the acquisition of life skills in such areas as hygiene, medication management, cooking, meal planning, cleaning, shopping and budgeting; developing strategies or establishing plans for maintaining these daily activities and other aspects of their recovery plan, for increasing their awareness of safety issues and for ensuring that residents receive adequate support in various aspects of their life; orientation of new clients; participating in intake for the program.
  • Supporting and participating in house meetings, resident association activities or other group activities which promote the wellbeing of the residents and the smooth operation of the house; conducting and facilitating resident group meetings, assisting client-run initiatives, preparing schedules of house activities; maintaining a general awareness of the activities or whereabouts of residents in the house, identifying issues, communicating or noting incidents for director as required; maintaining petty cash, collecting rents and intervening in issues pertaining to maintenance or property; providing cleaning or minor house maintenance as required; teaching residents the appropriate fire safety protocols and conducting regular health and safety checks;
  • Maintaining a strong support network of social, family, medical and psychiatric community links and resources; providing reminders and occasionally accompanying clients on their medical, psychiatric or other appointments; assisting the client in navigating the social services and health care systems and liaising with community agencies, hospitals or significant others; providing 24 hour crisis support on a rotational basis through a pager or similar system;

Must-Have
  • An understanding of harm reduction, and psychosocial rehabilitation principles
  • A relevant degree/diploma in human services,
  • At least two years of experience working with the client population
  • Knowledge of the issues faced by adults with special needs and a marginalized client group which can include addictions, cognitive impairments, HIV/AIDS.
  • An understanding of the therapeutic relationship with an ability to negotiate with clients on goals and priorities.

For the Safe Bed Program, the individual will participate as a member of a team of professionals whose focus is safety, stability and support for individuals who are medically stable, not a safety risk to themselves or others, and are therefore, not suitable for hospital admission or criminal detention. The Residential Support Worker will work the following shifts: twelve-hour shifts to facilitate 24/7 shift coverage, eight hour shifts in the evening to facilitate overnight shift coverage from 7:00 p.m.- 3:00 a.m. and eight hour shifts on the weekends from 11:00 a.m. - .7:00 p.m. They will participate as a member of a team of professionals whose focus is safety, stability, and support for individuals in a mental health crisis and in immediate contact with the police.   • Ensure the completion of shift responsibilities and routines as identified in agency policy and procedures
  • Maintenance of client files and data files including updating of client information consistent with agency policies and procedures
  • Attend monthly staff meetings and educational/training opportunities as required
  • Documentation of all shift changes using the electronic scheduling software and follow agency policies and procedures
  • Participate on specific committees or working groups as assigned by the Chief Executive Officer
  • Provide a safe environment by ensuring adherences to Workplace Health and Safety Regulations and Policies, Infection Control Guidelines, WHIMIS and Safe Work Procedures; including but not limited to Fire, Disaster and Evacuation Plans
  • Ensure client safety and client safety activities are emphasized throughout orientation of new staff members
  • Support an environment which avoids, prevents, and corrects all activities or actions which may resulting patient safety incident in the delivery of mental health services
  • Responsible for self care
  • Other duties as directed
