We have an exciting opportunity working as a clients Health & Safety Specialist in building a new Data Centre in Toronto. The position is a contract term and is anticipated to run to approximately 18 months. The position will be full-time during this work term, with the possibility of extension, depending on the current data centre needs.

The ideal candidate will have 5-10 years of hands-on EH&S experience in data centre construction and be proficient in the management of high-risk activities including electrical safety, confined space, fall protection, and materials handling. Experience evaluating and managing Data Centre sub-contractors is required. The candidate must also work well in collaborative environments, have strong verbal and written communication skills, be able to work independently, be detail-oriented, and possess a strong work ethic.

Duties and Responsibilities

As our client’s on-site safety representative, you will work in partnership with the current staff to ensure a safe work culture, and work with subcontractors to create a culture of safety that ensures that every employee remains safe. You will help ensure that site safety programs meet regulatory requirements and adhere to the client’s expectations for job site safety, which go above and beyond basic compliance. As a subject matter expert in safety, the successful candidate has a passion for health & safety, is recognized as a self starter and, a communicative leader who adheres to the highest standard of excellence.

Responsibilities may include but are not limited to :

  • Develop strategic roadmap, timing, and periodicity of safety deliverables for projects
  • Manage safety deliverables identified for project delivery
  • Understand and train team for client-specific reporting requirements for incidents and worker hours
  • Provide communication expectations with project team
  • Participate in site safety walks
  • Participate in site meetings such as OAC, GC orientations, foreman meetings, GC safety meetings. List not inclusive.
  • Team Guidance and Leadership

The successful candidate’s qualifications will include :

  • University degree or college diploma in a relevant field (occupational health & safety, environmental and / or safety engineering, safety management, industrial hygiene, sciences);
  • 5-10 years’ experience with health and safety in the construction industry, preferably with Data Centre construction or similar large projects;
  • Must have a deep understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Construction Regulation, Industrial Establishments Regulation and related regulations and their applicability.
  • Must have working knowledge of and ability to implement electrical safety procedures with a deep understanding of CSA Z462 (NFPA 70e) and the control of hazardous energy sources.
  • Additional safety training such as OSHA 10 or 30-hour for Construction or General Industry, 24-hour or 40-hour HAZWOPER is a plus.
  • Proficient with management / supervision of high-risk activities including electrical safety, excavation, fall protection, material handling and crane operations;

In addition, the ideal candidate will have the following skills and attributes :

  • Experienced in communicating and problem solving as a team with subcontractors.
  • A background and knowledge working with trades such as electricians, ironworkers, pipefitters, etc. (preferred);
  • An understanding of the complexities of multi-employer worksites;
  • Experienced trainer on construction safety topics;
  • Must have strong skills in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Office 365;
  • Potential employees may be required to pass a company-paid physical examination, drug-screen and have a valid class G driver’s license
  • Experience conducting construction site safety audits and inspections;
  • Experience conducting incident investigations and reporting;
  • Able to juggle multiple priorities with ease, welcomes challenges;

  • Support and influence a safety-first culture with support from the Global Field Services Manager and Executives.

WHAT YOU BRING TO THE ROLE:



  • Post-secondary education of a degree or diploma in Occupational Health & Safety and Environment is preferred.
  • 1-3 years of related HSE work experience within the construction industry, ideally in private sector.
  • Certified Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC) would be considered a desired asset.
  • Working knowledge of provincial and local safety and environmental regulations and programs
  • Ability to work independently and as a team, self-starter and energetic
  • Ability to facilitate health and safety information and programs
  • Ability to present to all levels of employees, including tradespersons, office and management team members.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships
  • Excellent communication, listening, and collaboration skills
  • Experience using MS Office and database systems is an asset.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to maintain accurate data

Job Responsibilities:

1. Policy Implementation:

  • Assist in the implementation of HSE policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Maintain HSE documentation and records.

2. Risk Assessment and Management:

  • Conduct regular risk assessments and audits.
  • Identify potential hazards and assist in implementing corrective actions.
  • Monitor and review the effectiveness of risk control measures.

3.Training and Education:

  • Support the development and delivery of H
  • SE training programs for employees.
  • Ensure that all employees are aware of and understand HSE policies and procedures.
  • Promote a culture of safety and environmental awareness.

4. Incident Investigation and Reporting:

6. Environmental Management:

  • Support the development and implementation of environmental management plans.
  • Monitor environmental performance and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Promote sustainable practices and initiatives within the organization.

7. Emergency Preparedness:

  • Assist in developing and maintaining emergency response plans.
  • Conduct emergency drills and training sessions.
  • Coordinate with local emergency services as needed.

8. Continuous Improvement:

  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in HSE practices.
  • Stay updated with industry best practices and technological advancements.
  • Implement innovative solutions to enhance workplace safety and environmental performance.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a health and safety role, preferably in a manufacturing or industrial setting.
  • Professional certification (e.g. CRSP) is highly desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of health and safety regulations and best practices.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to conduct thorough investigations and risk assessments.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and health and safety management software.

Working Conditions:

  • This role may require working in various environments, including office settings, manufacturing floors, and outdoor locations.
  • The HSE Supervisor will need to travel to different sites and facilities.

ABOUT THIS CAREER OPPORTUNITY

Reporting to the HSE Manager of Alberta, the HSE Administrator will provide day to day administrative support services for the HSE Managers across Western Canada. In this role, you ensure proper application and use of Black & McDonald's Health and Safety Management System, as well as other record keeping with respect to safety performance and training; work collaboratively with the HSE teams and Operations to assist with the development, implementation, and revision of HSE policies, programs, and procedures.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Day to day administrative support services for the HSE Manager and and the HSE Department
  • Conduct New Hire Orientations
  • Maintain databases, administer sub-contractor programs, provide administrative HSE to support job sites
  • Data entry of New Hire Documentation, including entry of Health and Safety Training Records
  • Recording and maintenance of the incident statistical database
  • Assist and prepare where required, documentation for pre-qualification submissions
  • Coordinate Joint Health and Safety Committee functions at office location and actively participate on the Committee
  • Coordinate Health and Safety Trainings as required
  • Produce regular reports and meeting minutes as required
  • Other duties as assigned by your manager

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • 1 to 3 years of relevant experience preferred
  • Trade and/or site experience considered an asset

SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to work independently; proactive, shows initiative to get thing done
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail in all areas of work
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to multitask and meet changing priorities
