We currently have a new opportunity for a Human Factors Engineering Analyst to join our Calgary or Ottawa team. Working with a team of Human Factors, User Experience experts and designers, you will define the problem space and the end user needs while advocating and expressing those needs to the engineering and development community. You will make decisions based on Human Factors principles, research and usability testing for military systems, ensuring the soldiers have the tools they need to be effective. The end result is an iterative user centred design process to ensure usable interfaces; which need to be effectively communicated through written and verbal presentations to the design teams and customers.
Your day to day:
- Human Factors Analysis to identify end user needs (Task Analysis, Workload, End User Analysis) from concept to implementation
- Employing human factors principles, standards (MIL-STDS, ANSI, ISO etc), and research to a design to ensure a more effective and usable user interface.
- Create and support innovative and effective end user interfaces (hardware, software or firmware) and able to effectively communicate the design rationale.
- Communicate both the user needs and detailed user interface designs and design rationale through HFE documentation, and presentations in order to advocate for end users and a design within an integrated design team environment.
- Review equipment and system specifications for HFE requirements content.
- Collaborate with various stakeholders to plan research so we can better understand our users and reveal new opportunities
- Preparing and executing various forms of in-person User Analysis and Usability Test events with the end user community resulting in detailed human factors analysis, recommendations or artefacts.
- Prepare recommendations and deliver presentations to influence and guide key stakeholders to better understanding
- Help define product requirements and understand user workflows to assist design and product teams in iterating through product discovery
- Development of or support of Human Factors analysis and artefacts (workload, task analysis, personas etc.) as well as influence the design of prototypes in a variety of mediums and fidelity as appropriate.
- Moderate workshops, in-person interviews, and remote sessions
- Facilitate research through collection, analysis and producing insights to lead the team towards better user outcomes
- Establish and maintain strong internal and external relationships
- Using an iterative user centred design process to ensure usable interfaces; which need to be effectively communicated through written and verbal presentations to the design teams and customers.
- Bachelor or Master’s degree in Human Factors Engineering, Industrial Design, Psychology Kinesiology, Computer Science, Systems Design, Ergonomics, or related discipline with course work in human factors engineering/ergonomics/human computer interaction.
- 2+ years of experience in Human Factors, Human Systems, Human Computer Interaction or as a UX Researcher or UX Architect.
- Experience in analysing the results and creating artefacts illustrating the end user needs and recommendations for design.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain Canadian Security Clearance and a positive Controlled Goods Assessment. Eligibility to work in Canada either as a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident.
Ideally you may also have some of the following:
- Familiar with executing Human Factors or UX in an agile environment
- Familiarity with design guidelines and standards (MIL-STD 1472, ISO and ANSI standards)
- Willingness for occasional travel

You will join the Flight deck Design and Human Factors team.
In this group, we ensure that the design of the aircraft hardware, software, human tasks, and work environment are compatible with the perceptual, cognitive, and physical attributes of the personnel who will assemble, operate, and support it. We are responsible for the User Centered Design and certification of the Flight deck, including avionics Human Machine Interfaces and other equipment used by the pilots.
**What are your contributions to the team?**
In your role, you will conceptualize, design, evaluate and certify Flight deck interfaces through requirements capture, prototyping, simulation, analysis and usability tests.
More specifically, you will:
+ Deploy cognitive ergonomics expertise to support design, tests and analysis of Human-Machine Interfaces.
+ Support requirements development, task analysis, and human error analysis.
+ Develop system Human Machine Interface (HMI) simulations and prototypes.
+ Create and manage documentation for Human Factors activities related to new aircraft, significant cockpit modifications and sustaining programs.
+ Elaborate and conduct User Centered Design activities related to Flight deck HMI.
+ Perform scenario-based Flight deck and User eXperience (UX) evaluation in line with BA Flight deck philosophy.
+ Interact with Flight Crews to develop and assess overall cockpit physical and cognitive usability.
+ Support certification effort for 1302 and other Human Factors related regulations.
+ Interact with several programs / platforms.
**How to thrive in this role?**
As our ideal candidate,
+ You possess a Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Science and a Degree in Cognitive Ergonomics, Psychology, Industrial Design or equivalent.
+ You have practical experience in cognitive ergonomics (cognition, perception, decision making, workload, situation awareness, human error) and notions of physical ergonomics (anthropometry, strength, reach, vision).
+ You have a relevant experience and knowledge in the Aerospace industry, including especially aircraft systems, flight operations, regulatory environment, and design standards (e.g. MIL STD, SAE ARP, ARINC, etc.).
+ You are resourceful in computer-based tools, autonomous in learning and adapting easily to new software.

You will join the Flightdeck Design and Human Factors team.
In our group, we ensure that the design of the aircraft hardware, software, human tasks, and work environment are compatible with the perceptual, cognitive, and physical attributes of the personnel who will assemble, operate, and support it.
